This review is late, but as they always say, better late than never, right? We traveled to Belize last year (May 2012), where we decided to spend the first five days of our trip in San Pedro and then the last five days of our trip in San Ignacio.

We were picked up at the water boat taxi stand, where we then were taken to our first excursions on our way to Mariposa Jungle Lodge. Our excursions were booked by Mariposa. We went cave tubing and ziplining. Both were great fun.

Just an FYI, if you get carsickness easily, this isn't the place for you. The ride up to Mariposa is long and bumpy.

We arrived back at Mariposa to check in and were showed our casita. It was beautiful and big enough for four people (two couples). Be warned (we knew this, but I wouldn't want anyone to be surprised) the casita was not air conditioned. If you get hot easily, be sure to request a few fans like we did. They gladly brought some up to our room.

We chose to have our meals included (breakfast and dinner) (alcoholic drinks are extra). We did not get a package that included lunch. We did decide one day to order lunch, and I will admit, I found the offerings to be a bit sparse. I would recommend if you're not getting lunch in your package to buy some snacks from the main city or bring some with you from the US, as there aren't any restaurants (well none that we could see) near Mariposa.

We found Clara and Nelmarie to be wonderful hostesses! Both always had a smile on their faces and were more than happy to help with any questions we may had over the course of our stay.

The food was good. We do have to admit that the portions weren't huge (for some dishes) and we were always a bit timid to speak up to ask for seconds. We did find that when we did ask for more, they were more than happy to get us additional helpings. We especially liked the night that we had dinner outside by the pool. It was just lovely. The best meal had to have been the chicken, rice, and pineapple dish, inside a pineapple!

We also did a few more excursions: ATM and Caracol, Rio Frio Cave, Rio On Pools, and the butterfly happy hour. These were our two favorite excursions. Our guides for both tours were amazing. All our guides were knowledgeable and friendly. All of these excursions require a lot of physical activity.

The butterfly happy hour was fun, but you will have to pay for this "excursion".

The casitas are secluded and we couldn't hear the other guests in their casitas, which was nice.

We also learned how to make fresh tortillas with the cooks at Mariposa. This was wonderful! Nelmarie even provided us with the recipe for the tortillas for us to take home. The tortillas were wonderful!

All in all we had a wonderful trip to Mariposa. I would recommend others to stay here.

Pros: Clara and Nelmarie were fabulous! They always provided service with a smile. The grounds at Mariposa are beautiful!

Cons: Food portions weren't huge, but you can ask for seconds.

Tips: If you go on the ATM excursion, women be sure to wear a shirt that covers your shoulders. Also, everyone should wear socks and water shoes (there's a part of the tour that requires you to take your shoes off, but have socks on). If you're hungry, ask for more food. Bring lots of bugspray if you don't like bugs! Check your shoes for scorpions before putting them on.

I would recommend if you’re splitting up your Belize trip to go half the time in the mountains/jungle and half at the beach to do the beach portion last. We packed so much into the five days we were here that we wished we had done the jungle portion of the trip first.

I'm so glad I listened to the great Trip Advisor reviews and chose Mariposa Jungle Lodge for my Belize vacation. My girlfriend and I wanted to experience a place in the jungle, but a place where we wouldn't be afraid. We also wanted a small, friendly resort where we weren't lost in an impersonal crowd. Mariposa Jungle Lodge was a definitely the right choice for us.
during the reservation and inquiry process, both Clara and Sharyn were so helpful in making suggestions and explaining how we could do things with the least waisted road travel time. It was difficult for us to understand the actual distances between places because the mileage was so low. But when we saw the layout of the land and the actual road system, we were sure glad we followed local advice or we would of been traveling back and fourth more times than necessary. We highly recommend the advisory services offered by Mariposa.
We are only moderately adventuresome when it comes to food so we were relieved that meals were often Belizean or Mayan but the ingredients were nothing unappealing. The private Food Preference Questionnaires were a new experience for us, as we're the personalized daily menus. It made us feel very special.
We loved our day at Caracol and the stops at Rio Frio Cave and Rio On Pools, the amazing day at ATM, river tubing and horseback riding in the jungle. We needed our six days at Mariposa to both relax and enjoy adventures.
Thanks to Sharyn and Clara for their planning advice, to Nelmarie and her staff for the great service, to Esau for delicious meals and Damian and Agusto for excellent tours. It would be great to go back and see some more.

Room Tip: My cabana was named Toucan and I loved it, but you can not go wrong choosing any cabana

Second time at this beautiful place! The pool and outdoor bar are to die for! The bird watching tower is something I never saw before. I would recommend this place to everyone. The host and hostess Jim, and Sharyn are superb. Our friends loved it as well!!

Four Texans walk into a bar ... Our arrival at Mariposa Jungle Lodge following a flight into Belize City, a detour to the unusual but interesting baboon sanctuary (ever had a howler monkey sit on your shoulder?), and a bumpy ride into the jungle was met with the proprietor and staff of Mariposa offering a cocktail or cold drink in the lounge/dining area of the lodge. What a nice welcome.

We enjoyed two spacious, very clean, very comfortable jungle huts during our three-night stay. The days were busy and full of adventure (exploring jungle caverns, hiking to waterfalls, exploring the area), and the nights were pampered and carefree. A rest in a hammock or a dip in the pool, with staff attending to your every wish, makes for a memorable evening!

Breakfast and dinner were included at the lodge, and the meals were very good and quite plentiful. Warm buttered rum bananas? Yes, please. And the chef will share his recipes!

Kudos to Sharyn and Jim for sharing their piece of paradise and for employing such a kind and helpful staff. We are still reminiscing, and we are missing you all.

These particular "four Texans" are "Instant party." We thoroughly enjoyed serving guests who were so good at having fun. Can't print details. "What happens at Mariposa, stays at Mariposa." But it was all G-rated. Just plain old fun!

Thanks for the review and welcome back any time. We'll never forget you.

We spent the first 6 days of our honeymoon here and had a fantastic time. The cabanas are beautiful and have great views out into the jungle canopy.we even saw a toucan-the national bird of belize- just outside our cabana which was a highlight. we were the only people staying for the whole 6 days and so had our own pool, restaurant and guide! It was amazing I have never experienced such friendly and attentive service (without paying extortionate prices when I find it never feels that genuine!) we had our own menu every night and the food was delicious and very varied. The jungle BBQ and night sleeping under the stars on the bird watch tower was very memorable and we did some great trips including butterfly happy hour and river tubing. All the staff and sharon and jim (the owners) were so welcoming and go out their way to make sure you have the best time. Damian our driver and guide was really knowledgeable and we enjoyed getting to know him whilst we were there. Do not stay anywhere else this place is perfect!!

It's always special to hot a couple like you. Thanks for your review and providing us with some great pictures. Your toucan is amazing inasmuch as you took it in the wild. We hope your Belize jungle adventure was only the tip of the iceberg for a lifetime of amazing travel.
