Loved the accommodations, the pool and the staff, who were very friendly and knowledgable. Agosto was a terrific tour guide to the ruins, and Nellmarie mixes a mean drink. Clara arranged a terrific set of tours for us, and Taj was a great taxi driver from Placencia and then to Belize City. (took us on an impromptu tour of the capital). We stayed 5 nights. Had a great time our last night with a spur of the moment dinner in San Ignacio with lodge owner Sharon and some of the staff and another couple staying at the lodge. Sharon gave us a quick walking tour of town along with much town gossip!
(we too had a small mistake on our bar bill... but it was tiny given the total bill and we don't think it was intentional. but it is always a wise policy to check your bill anywhere.) Would definitely recommend. Nellmarie's husband is the chef, and he does a fine job with Sharon's recipes. The Moroccan chicken was my favorite.

The tour guide to Caracol was fantastic! Augusto knew about the Mayan history, the terrain, the flora and fauna. Since we had a rental car, we drove ourselves and the guide rode with us.

The location is 9 miles in on a rough dirt road, but we were going to Caracol which is even further up the rough road. The rooms were nicely appointed with good bath products, a screened porch, and a mosquito netted bed. The pool was new, clean and refreshing. The mattress was a bit hard and lumpy. The dinners were very good. No one cared for the overcooked omelette on the first morning so we requested eggs to order the next morning and they were done just right. The drinks were expensive, $5 US for a beer, so the bar tab was higher than expected.

If you want something, ask for it. We requested that they hold our drinks and fruit in their refrigerator, since they don't want food stored in the rooms. We also requested a cooler with ice for our excursion to Caracol so we could keep the drinks and snacks cold. We requested coffee before breakfast, and they had a pot set up for us at 6am.

Four of us, two couples, stayed at this lodge and they tried to overcharge both bills with the bar tab. We were there 2 nights and they posted the first day's bar tab on both the first and second day. They corrected their "mistake" but I'm not sure it was an accident since it happened to both of us. I wonder how many people just pay the bill without questioning it?

This is a most distressing review. The writer is generous in her compliments and it’s gratifying to learn that our overall efforts are appreciated. That’s why it’s especially hurtful to read that she thinks we would intentionally overcharge for minor bar items. We have two people posting bar tabs to our billing system and I understand the sum of $12 was inadvertently entered twice. It was corrected immediately upon notification. Surely we wouldn’t risk our reputation by entering a charge twice. This is a serious and potentially damaging (libelous) accusation if any potential guests accept it at face value and choose another destination as a result.

We sincerely regret the error but, reality is, errors occur. Our staff is human. It’s the correction process that should be critiqued rather than a minor error in the context of the overall visit. Management and staff are extremely hurt by the suggestion of dishonesty and wonder if our guest realized how devastating her comment could be. All four of the guests were nothing but complimentary when they left the Lodge immediately after settling the bill, so we are shocked to be accused in public of dishonesty.

Also, we do not charge $5US for a beer. That would be absurd in Belize. We charge $5BZE, which is $2.50US for a beer. Perhaps the guest saw the Belize price somewhere and misunderstood, but surely not on her bill. We have reviewed the bar chits and bill to confirm that her total charge for 5 beers was $12.50, which isn't divisible by an even $5US.

We always appreciate constructive criticism and advice, so we will put a positive spin on this correspondence by assuring our former and future guests that we have adopted a tighter procedure for handling charges at the Lodge. I sincerely hope future readers will not accept this guest’s incorrect statement regarding our bar prices or her gratuitous innuendo that anyone associated with Mariposa would intentionally make a billing error.

My husband and I stayed at Mariposa for four nights during our honeymoon in Belize and were thrilled with our choice. We fell in love with this area and this was largely part to the experience provided by the Mariposa team. All the staff were fantastic and went out of their way to take care of us during our stay. The food was absolutely delicious and we so enjoyed the traditional Belizean meals we got to sample! We booked three excursions and were blow away by all of them; the Mariposa guide was just fantastic and contributed so much to our experience of the region. This is where we experienced the most adventure and relaxation on our trip; our little thatched cabin in the jungle was the perfect haven too. A huge thank you to Sharyn, Nelmarie, Esau, Agusto, Eilda and Joerdy for such a wonderful and memorable four days. We hope to return one day.

Wonderful location for a first time experience of the wonders of the jungle (dirt roads and all) and the Maya culture. The accommodations are superb, tour guide's excellent(!) and the staff very pleasant and personable, always with a genuine smile on their face, they were all a pleasure. You won't be disappointed. And when there, you have to go up to the bird tower!

This lodge offers very comfortable, clean and spacious cabanas. Even though that is true for lots of resorts, the thing that separates this lodge from most is the staff. They not only handled every one of our arrangements flawlessly, including a number of excursions to local and far off attractions, but they made several last minute changes in scheduling, at our request, without any problems at all. They also handled all of our travel arrangements for our stay in Ambergris Caye, and followed through to make sure that part of the trip came off without a hitch as well. The staff felt so much like a family, that the operation made us feel as if we were at home, not on the road. We had very unusual dietary requirements, being vegans, and every meal we had was spot on and very delicious. It is a lodge in the jungle, so be prepared for lots of birds early in the morning, (the same as any other lodge), and the water in the shower can move from just right to very cold in the blink of an eye, but those are really petty and inconsequential things in the overall scope of what is being provided. This is a very good facility and the little extras you get, like the cookout dinner atop the birdtower, and the personal conversation with the owner, makes this a very good choice for the Cayo district. All the lodging is fairly far from most of the attractions, but if you want a great experience, you won't go wrong with the Mariposa.

The best thing about Mariposa is the exceptional service provided by Sharyn and her staff. Sharyn arranged all tours for us, our accommodations at our next destination, and also our day to day logistics. You really get a taste of the Belize jungle if you stay here. The views and the sounds are unlike anything we had experienced before.

I would highly recommend airport pickup provided by the lodge. It is a long trip the roads are terrible. You can arrange all of your tours through Sharyn or just use her excellent website. We had a really great time at the lodge and participated in many tours. The accommodations were beautiful with big comfortable beds and elegant furniture and decorations. Dinner was served at the lodge with special events at either bird tower or by the pool. Air conditioning would have been very nice to have for some of the muggy nights. Also, the lodge is pretty far away from anything so any trip requires a long drive on dirt roads. The food was very good and Sharyn was extremely attentive to our needs and willing to modify plans on short notice.

Among the best tours that we did was the relaxing river rafting, the wonderful horseback riding, and the unique ATM cave exploration. Tikal was a bit disappointing because it is a very long day, it was extremely hot when we went, and there was little wild life to see. The ruins were quite interesting, though. Also, our Guatemalan guide was not very good. The baboon sanctuary was not really worth while - if you go, put on a lot of mosquito repellant. Belize zoo was interesting if you have an hour on the way back to the airport. The bird watching tours are hit or miss. Ours looked to be a miss, but then we saw a beautiful king vulture in the tree by the lodge. The guides from the lodge were all great. Very nice, knowledgable, and eager to help.

We just returned from a "Surf and Turf" week in Belize. While we thoroughly enjoyed our days on Caye Caulker, the highlight of our trip was our four nights at Mariposa Lodge! I had done extensive research on the lodge so thought I knew what to expect. All the glowing reports that I had read were true. What I hadn't expected was the impact Sharyn and her staff had on us. From the time Sharyn met us at the car and welcomed us all by name, to the surprise champagne and decorations in my newly engaged daughter's cabana, to the "Let's talk about tomorrow" chats after dinner, to the wonderful meals around the pool and birdwatching tower, to our well organized tours (cave tubing, ATM, Caracol, zoo), to the ever smiling staff, we all felt as though we were visiting family friends. Our only complaint is that we only booked 4 nights. We had a wonderful first experience in Belize. Thank you, Sharyn and your staff.
