Very interesting tour with underground caves, containing thousands of paintings, and a 39 mt high Buddha. Not far from Matara where you can do some elephant riding at the temple on the main road. Chamara Sada our tuctuc driver organised private riding for us with his friend.

Chamara, is excellent, trustworthy, a good driver, always finding us great bargains and very reasonably priced. We went on a number of tours with him, that he organised, and included whale watching, elephant riding, turtle hatchery, tea plantation, diving, shopping and numerous dinner trips. We also had him drive us to the airport and pick us up from our previous hotel at a considerable saving to the hotel or local operators. I cant recommend him highly enough. Please contact me directly if you would like his details.

Situated close to Matara town this Temple is famous for its iconic huge Buddha Statue. As the original history of the temple starts in ancient times, the newly built temple was founded in 19th century. The temple is more like a hub for Buddhism combine with the well known Matara Bo-Tree. The temple has lots of buddhist statues most created in the modern era. The place is calm and its a good place to learn and warship Buddhism. Traveller tip : Don't get along with guides and sellers around here, most of them are looking for easy money.

locals were a bit aggressive in terms of soliciting money and donations; it seems a bit like a canival and not like a legitimate temple. But interesting to experience nonetheless
