Comilla Bungalow
Reviewed April 18, 2014

This is the perfect place to recover from a long flight. It is only an hour or so from the airport, and we were most fortunate to have a family member meet and escort us to the bungalow.
It is in an isolated spot, but transport can be arranged to the nearest town or temple. Being in the middle of a coconut plantation gives one the chance to get away from it all and just enjoy the beauty of the place.
We found the staff most helpful.
We were pleasantly surprised by everything that was done by the owners on my husbands birthday.

This is a truly lovely bungalow located high up on a coconut estate on route from either Colombo or the airport to Kandy. It is very atmospheric with large airy rooms, polished concrete floors and period Dutch furniture The 2 bedrooms in the main bungalow are exceedingly comfortable and are separated by a large communal living area leading out to the pool on the deck outside

Meals can be eaten both in and out. The vegetarian curry was delicious and breakfast was first class.

The staff were all kind and helpful and booking could not have been easier.

I stayed two nights at Comilla Bungalow with my wife, and I must say that it was one of the best holidays we have ever had. The bungalow is located in a very serene setting, in the middle of a coconut estate.
The continuous breeze that flows near the left wing veranda and the poolside during the evening is just amazing and relaxes you to a point that you don’t feel like going into the room to sleep, but rather feel like continuing to stay out there and inhale the fresh air. Chef Martil’s pork chops were very special so were his other meals. Room service was excellent and the steward was very friendly and excellent in service, ensuring that our needs are met. We shall surely return. A.P

Room Tip: The Chalet is special as it has a beautiful view, very clean and comfortable.

Me, my 4 year old daughter, my partner and my father all stayed at Comilla as a first stop on our 23nights trip around Sri Lanka. We stayed for 4 nights and were there on Christmas eve (when we got given a box of tea all wrapped up nicely) and during my daughters 4th birthday (she got given a little toy and a mix of suits). The place is stunning. You are surrounded by a coconut plantation (and can drink a free coconut whenever you wish) its a modernised colonial bungalow. The rooms are spacious, fairly clean with a stunning open roof bathrooms. There is black stone present everywhere, which i think looks amazing. The food was great, as a flavour and variety. Even tho we were in the middle of nowhere we felt safe. We used the safe in the wardrobe for all our money, passports and personal belongings (we never take any chances when we travel as you just ever know). The negatives are that although they claimed to have wi-fi it never worked which meant we were unable to book our next hotel at Kandy and we came unstuck since we arrived at Kandy on the 27th of December and everywhere was booked. There was a TV but you had to pay if you wanted to watch any channels (first time i see such nonsense in a hotel). We kept asking Adrian to books us tuk-tuks so we can go to Colombo and Gampaha itself (Colombo was about 1.45h from the bungalow and Gampaha took 30 mins) we found the transport offered to be extremely expensive and prices did not make sense. For example for a day trip to colombo on christmas day we payed 9000 rupees which is £45, granted the driver took to a few places he did not speak English so communication was impossible apart from if we called Adrian on the mobile. We bought him dinner, gave him money for lunch and payed the parking fees wherever necessary, plus gave him a tip. We payed 9000 rupees to travel 200km in a van (we aranged ourself with other local people) to Kandy with a stop for 3hours to see the Elephants sanctuary at Pinawalla. Compared to this our tuk-tuk and all transport arranged from Adrian was extortionate. The above negatives did not stop us from enjoying all that Comilla bungalow had to offer. We felt like kings thanks to Adrian and the stuff. The bed was not comfortable nor the pillows but waking up every morning opening your windows and seeing the beauty of the nature around you can make anyone forget his worries and unpleasantness. We loved it there and would like to recommend to anyone wishing to stay near colombo but not in Colombo. Its affordable and luxurious just make sure to stop off at Gampaha and buy yourself some alcohol. One pointer to the owners- try and arrange a call masseuse as i was in dire need of a good massage but no one was able to arrange such request and after a long haul flight i am sure this would be a welcoming offer by many guests (at a descent price of course). Wishing comilla and its staff all the best in the future!

We stated here at the first stop on arrival to Sri Lanka. The place is almost 2 1/2 hour drive from airport and very difficult to find in the night. When we arrived, no staffs at presence and we were wondering around the premise with dim lights and entering the building by ourselves.
Everything here seems perfect but until one of my friend's money was lost in the mid of nowhere on the first day after we had breakfast here. He only found out the money was being stolen when we arrived at the Colombo city on the first day visit, and at the first time we have chance to spend our money. As we couldn't suspect any bad thing happens, we wait until we got back to the bungalow at late night after the city tour, and trying to search high & low if he might misplace somewhere in the room, but of course failed. That's what led us to suspect it might be taken by staffs or workers who were here in the morning when we were having breakfast at the patio.
On the next day morning, we tried to set up a trap by leaving my wallet, with a little cash notes on the table in my room.
After the main staff, Adrian has served us the breakfast, while we still sitting at the patio having our food, my friend saw Adrian quietly walk into the building. My friend quickly tail him from the back and saw him entering into our room without our permission. My friend quietly walk near to the room door, steps into the room, he saw Adrian stood beside the table and open my wallet. Adrian didn't take out any money (May be too little cash), and put down the wallet, while he was turning around, he was shocked to see my friend standing at the door! Adrian then quickly walk to the window, pretending to open the window and telling my friend that he is trying to clean up the room.
My friend quickly ran to us and telling us what he saw was happening. While I ran over to the room, I saw Adrian quickly walked away from my room at another exit.
After the big questioning and argument, obviously Adrian declared that he was trying to clean up the room while we are having breakfast. He declared that he has the rights to enter our room without getting our permission, even we are still here having breakfast? I'm wondering which hotel has this rule to enter guests' room without any notice, when the guest is still around? Wasn't this very suspicious? And why was he touching my wallet if he is just trying to clean the room?
We complaint this to the owner of Comilla, and it was hopeless that the owner, sided his worker and doubted our words. Even we had called the police to come for investigation (of course nothing can be found), the owner still believe that his staff has nothing wrong to enter our room without asking us while we are having breakfast at the patio.
Obviously, Adrian's act was most suspicious from what we witnessed.
I must reveal this case here to warn him not doing this anymore in the future, and of course if anyone wanted to stay at this place, please be extra careful not to leave your room door open even you are just around the building.
This incident leaves a bad impression towards Sri Lanka as our holiday mood was spoilt at the beginning part of the journey.

The bungalow is situated 1 hour from the airport and we have a pick up service with a family member in attendance if requested. The Manager was present when the guest arrived and greeted them with staff. We immediately conducted an inquiry to the complaint with the involvement of the local police in the presence of the guest but there was no veracity to the allegation. According to the guest they lost the money the previous day when they visited the city, but did not report the loss to the management. Safety deposit boxes are provided in every room, however was not used by the respective guest concerned. We have been in operation for two years and this is the first complaint received. We value all our guests and treat them with respect.

Our family has stayed at Comilla Bungalow about 6 times now. It is our bolt hole to get away from the hassle of life in the city. The house is lovely: a well designed, modern conversion of an old plantation bungalow. The small pool overlooks the plantation and you can watch squirrels and monitor lizards as you swim. We sit out on the veranda until midnight trying to spot hares.
The staff are excellent. Nothing is too much trouble, and they are really discreet which means you can really relax as if it your own place. The food is lovely. It is bring your own alcohol, but there are a number of soft drinks.
Nearby there are some interesting rock temples where you can walk to the top of massive rocks and look out over the countryside. The staff can arrange a trishaw if you need.

We tried Comilla as a last stop in our tour, to be honest because our usual choice, the Wallawwa, wasn't available. It is a lovely property with two rooms in the main building and a separate larger room for families. We were the only couple here and it is possibly a little too quiet on that basis. The staff here are extremely welcoming and friendly and try very hard to make the stay a good one. However we did feel that they were somewhat rushing us to get through the meal so that they could lock up: once the evening meal is finished, the staff are all in another building. In our case, this meant that by about 8.30pm we were locked in the building with nothing to do. Cooked breakfast is provided, but was unfortunately stone cold on arrival. The food was otherwise of good quality. The premises are not licenced but we had not been told this before arrival, so it was not possible to have a drink before during or after the meal, as the property is isolated.
The bedroom accommodation itself is spacious and fitted out with quality materials although the very large bed does take up a lot of the room. The bathroom is semi-external and is attractive and works very well. There is ample storage and a safe in a separate dressing room. The airconditoning is effective but relatively noisy because it switches on and off frequently and the external compressor is quite close to the bathroom, so the motor sounds are audible.
We found the bed to be very firm and the pillows to be very hard. Whether this contributed more to our disturbed sleep than the rather noisy chanting and music (presumably from a nearby temple) which went on until at least 3pm is difficult to say.
Overall I'm sorry that we didn't have a more positive experience, since many of the ingredients are very good; it's just that in our case the delivery didn't really match the ambitions of this place.
