Owner description: Discover Blair Castle and go on a journey into the fascinating past of the Dukes and Earls of Atholl. Unique amongst Scottish castles, the story here leads you from Mary Queen of Scot's visit to the Civil War, and from the Jacobite cause to Queen Victoria's famous stay which led to the creation of Europe's only surviving private army, the Atholl Highlanders. Over 700 years of Scottish history are on display across 30 rooms. Highlights of the castle tour include the Baronial Entrance Hall, featuring weapons used at the Battle of Culloden; the classic Georgian styling of the Picture Staircase; the grandeur of the State Dining Room and Drawing Room; and the magnificent Ballroom, bedecked in hundreds of antlers. The Castle sits at the hub of a breathtaking historic landscape and the gardens and grounds feature a 9 acre walled garden, a peaceful wooded grove, a ruined kirk, a red deer park and a whimsical Gothic folly.

I visited Blair Castle with a party of 34 friends. We entered the castle and greeted with a tot of whisky liqueur - beautiful on a cold day. The guide gave us a brief history of the castle and we were left to go round by ourselves (which we preferred). The miniatures in the glass cases were beautiful. Not interested in the armour, but the Belgium lace and embroidered bed linen was a joy to see. We had coffee in the coffee shop after exploring the castle and were delighted with the cakes on offer. We didn't explore the gardens as it was a very cold day, but we will make a return journey in the summer months. The castle is not suitable for wheelchair users as there are several flights of stairs to climb. It gave us a bit of exercise after sitting in the coach for a wee while.

Blair Castle is great; who does not love a good castle tour? We enjoyed it and learned a lot. Although the sprawling gardens contain many many wonderful things such as a waterlily and duck pond and a beautiful arched bridge, my favorites were the espaliered apple trees planted along one wall. They were labeled and included the years to which they dated. One variety went as far back as 1600. When we visited, they were bearing fruit so it was really interesting to see and compare them. I think it must be grand to see in every season!

The rooms downstairs were interesting although not set out as rooms, they were more display rooms but still good. The DVD showing the rest of the castle was very good, we could not go upstairs as my husband was in a wheelchair, our driver took us to the back entrance where a guide let us in, everyone was so kind and helpful, a very pleasant visit, ending as always with a coffee in the café.

Visited with Lochs and Glens. Wasn't like a traditional castle, more like a country house. Were met by a guide with a tot of whiskey liqueur. She gave us a brief history of the house and family. We could only take photos in the ballroom, which was a little disappointing. Had to go up 2 flights of stairs to start the tour but there was a lift available. Very nice. Well maintained. Worth a visit if you are in the area. Lovely grounds and coffee shop. If we returned we would go round the gardens.
