We were there when the temple was under wraps due to renovation. Look at a 10 cent yen coin to see the temple or a 10000 yen bill to visualize the phoenix. Go to the museum to enjoy the artifacts from the temple. Explore the setting and come back when the renovation is done. In the meantime enjoy the other temples and the shrine and get some green tea, green tea ice cream, green tea noodles. It is a lovely city in the tea growing region and the tea is superb.

Byodoin Temple is a bit far from the centre of Kyoto, but well-worth visiting. Take a guided tour to the Phoenix Hall and see a great Buddha statue. Then take a picture of the hall over the pond. Finally, visit Hoshokan Museum, where you can see treasures of the temple. Your ticket includes a museum entrance.

We took time to visit the Byodoin Temple and although the main attract, the Phoenix Hall was closed due to restoration, we walked the grounds and visited all the other buildings and visited the museum. It was a very lovely and worth your time even without being able to visit the Phoneix Hall.

The heart of the Boyodoin temple can not be visited for a while as major renovation started that may last fo 2 years.
Better check the temples website before visiting.

Some notable temples in Japan lose their sense of antiquity through the relentlessness with which they are repaired and restored. Not this one, set in spacious gardens between Nara and Kyoto.
