“Really enjoyed my stay”
Reviewed February 28, 2012

On arrival, Penny's greeting was very warm and friendly and made me feel so welcome, her tea and homemade cake was wonderful too :-)
My room was very comfortable, clean and tidy although a little chilly due to the cold weather but the extra heater Penny provided did the job nicely.
Breakfast was delicious, one of the best i've had at a B&B.
Overall my stay was superb, Penny and Paul are a lovely couple very friendly and their home is beautiful along with the huge garden, definitely will be coming back in the future.

My wife and I have just returned from a wonderful two-night stay at West Lodge. From the moment of our arrival Penny and Paul did everything possible to make us feel welcome, including providing a pot of tea with delicious cake in the snug, a comfortable room reserved for guests. Our bedroom was spotlessly clean and well appointed. We had chosen a room with an en suite shower but could have had one with an en suite bathroom as an option. Breakfast was excellent and possibly the best I have had, either in a B&B or a hotel. We had opted to eat in for both evenings and were delighted with the choice. Paul is a retired chef who enjoys preparing meals for the guests. Both meals were delicious, well presented and served in a dining room with a very pleasant ambiance. Little extras during our stay included complimentary drinks before the evening meals, a flask of fresh milk for our morning tea and helpful advice on local walks. This is an establishment that I feel sure I will want to return to again and again.

Very friendly and nothing was too much to make sure the stay was enjoyable. Large garden which the children loved especially the tree house. The terrace was great where we enjoyed a warm welcome from Penny with tea and cake . Very convenient location at the very centre of East Bergholt and within a short walking distance of Flatford Mill.

Room Tip: If you prefer a shower to a bath then ask when booking. The rooms with bath do not have a shower.

Such a warm welcome - it was like being at your favourite relative's. The bedroom was spacious and comfortable and the guest snug was a welcome after being out all day. Their pet dog was friendly, very well trained and so well behaved. So well placed for Flatford Mill. East Bergholt is such an interesting village to look round - we especially liked being able to buy organic veg from the place opposite the church, which we cooked when we got home and was delicious. Like previous visitors we also booked for the meal - 10/10 in every respect. The garden was amazing with the steps up the tree to the platforms - WOW, a shame we didn't have our coffee up there, perhaps next time.

Room Tip: The room we had was the double with shower - the house is in a very quiet location so no intrusive n...

West Lodge was recommended to us by a friend who raved about the location, the food, the owners and the whole experience so our expectations were high but exceeded by the reality. West Lodge is a jewel nestled in the middle of Constable country. The welcome couldn't be warmer, the English breakfast is the best you will ever eat (locally sourced bacon and sausages) and, altogether, we had a lovely weekend. We also booked an evening meal for the day we arrived and enjoyed 3 deliciious courses for only £22.50 each (not licenced so you take your own alcohol - perfect!). The Sun pub in Dedham does fantastic food - not cheap but worth every penny. The walking is second to none and the scenery is stunning - check it out, you won't be disappointed.

We had pretty high expectations from reading the reviews here and elsewhere and were not disappointed. In fact, I would say that the photos on the website do not do this place justice at all!

Our stay started very well with a warm welcome from Penny and tea and cake on their patio. We then explored the garden before dinner. This was huge, and had a platform high up in a tree with views of the Dedham Vale. Dinner was great, we ate around a big table with two other couples which made it feel more like a home than a hotel and this was really nice. Each of the three courses was delicious, and we would definitely recommend dinner here.

The room was the cheapest I could find in the area, and it was lovely. Cosy and pretty with fresh flowers and lots of character. We slept very well and awoke to a very good cooked breakfast with generous portions and a complimentary newspaper.

We will almost certainly be back if I can persuade my husband to break his own rules about visiting the same place twice, and will definitely be recommending West Lodge to friends and family! If more B&Bs were like this no-one would ever leave the UK for holidays.

Room Tip: Walk from Manningtree Station via Flatford Mill

My wife and I just stayed at this delightful B&B for one night whilst visiting friends. what a delightful place. The service from the moment we arrived to our departure was superb and would put most hotels to shame. The room was lovely, clean and warm. the breakfast was sublime and the little touches like giving us a torch to find our way back late at night to a flask of fresh milk left outside our door in case we wanted tea or coffee in our room ensured that we both left with a smile of our face in the morning. if you are visiting the Constable region of East Anglia I would highly recommend this lovely establishment. For the same price as a budget hotel room you will stay in a beautiful house/grounds in a "quaint" village 2 miles away from the motorway - there's just no contest!
