“Staff who really care.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 12, 2014

We have had a fabulous holiday at Discovery Bay, Although not a modern hotel the colonial 'feel' is there. The position situated on the edge of Holetown has been perfect for us, a few hundred yards to the town, where cars stop for you to cross the road, and everyone you pass wishes you well. The beach and swimming pool are always clean kept that way by 'Lanky' and the gardens full of birds and mongooses. The staff are really something special, who want you to have the best holiday possible, nothing seems to be too much trouble for them and everything done with a smile. When there are small problems, maybe a leak or a blown plug they seem to be instantly dealt with by handymen with a smile and impeccable manners. I cannot speak more highly of a superb team. Thankyou, Cleaners, kitchen, waiting, security, barmen, front desk, gardeners, handymen and any others that I may have missed out, To Jeremy and David, who have kept the smile on our faces, and the ever present Brian Carter whose staff do him proud.

Room Tip: Our room, 30, was perfect for us.

Thank you so much for taking the time to write this review.

We are very fortunate to be located in Holetown close to banks, supermarket, shops and many restaurant and bars.

”Lanky”, is our National treasure, he vacuums the pool at the crack of dawn and then moves on to placing the loungers and umbrellas on the beach before breakfast is finished.

The entire team is very focused on customer service and enjoy going the “extra mile”.

I will pass on your kind sentiments to David and Jeremy.

Let me end by saying that it has been our great pleasure to make your holiday an enjoyable and memorable one. We appreciated that you chose Discovery by rex and eagerly await your next visit in the not too distant future.
Sincerely,
Brian Carter

Stayed at Discovery Bay in November and had a wonderful time - revisited last week and it looks amazing. -- Beach has been revamped and re sanded and the pool area has all new daybeds and sunloungers with white drapes - lovely. Staff as lovely as ever - love this resort.

I am very pleased that you had the opportunity to experience the changes that were made after your November, 2013 visit.

The beach certainly is one of the best on the West Coast of Barbados and has transformed since the restoration project last year.

The addition of padded sun loungers and day beds to the pool deck has made it very warm and comforting.

The Discovery team tremendously enjoyed providing friendly efficient service to you and all of our guests.

I greatly look forward to welcoming you on your next visit so you can see what is new.

Sincerely,
Brian Carter

If you are looking for 5 star luxury, don't go to Discovery Bay. If you are looking for excellent value for money, it is a place very worthy of consideration. Brian Carter, the General Manager, says comparable resorts are three times the price of his. Whilst I question his multiple, he does give very good value for money. The rooms are adequate and everything worked, the view from our balcony of the Barbadian sunset was magical.
On a more practical note, the pool area was very good and well equipped, there was no shortage of sunbeds either around the pool or on the beach. Food and drink was plentiful and adequate; fine dining and Grand Cru wine it wasn't but value for money it was.

Thank you so much for taking the time to write this review.

For a hotel with such a prime location on the West Coast of Barbados we do believe that we offer excellent value for money and I am extremely pleased that you agree.
The Beach Front and Junior Suite rooms could not be any closer to the beach which allows stunning views over the Caribbean Sea.

The pool deck was vastly upgraded during closure, with new tiles on the entire deck, the addition of high quality padded sun loungers and day beds. This has made it a great place to relax and have a drink from the newly built Beach Bar. Lunch is also served from the new kitchen located within the beach bar. So every thing is centrally located for your comfort.

We greatly appreciated having you stay with us and I look forward to welcoming you back again is the near future.

Sincerely,
Brian Carter

Discovery Bay organised tickets for us to go and see England play West Indies, 1 day 20/20
cricket. They supplied transport to get to Bridgetown for the match also. It was a fantastic
day and England won!! Nothing was too much trouble for the staff to give information for what ever we wanted to do and this included using the local buses. We explained where we wanted to go and they supplied us with all the info we needed for a great tour of the North of the Island which is so worth seeing.
Brian runs this friendly relaxing hotel. It's a bit tired and 3 star but that is part of it's charm with beautiful gardens full of birdlife. The food is not fine dining but wholesome and varied. The lunch is as good as the evening dinner. The sea in front of the hotel is wonderful for swimming even though it shelves off quite steep in the shallows. The staff are friendly making you feel welcome.
The area of complaint is the beds!! Yes they need investment. This is one of the biggest issues with many hotels, they just don't get it. They would have so many return visits if they invested in decent mattresses. If Premier Inns can do it, any one can!
We loved our stay, would return if we thought the beds had been improved. Brian tells us they intend to do just that!

Room Tip: top floor ocean view but garden rooms are great if you want to watch the birdlife

I am very glad that you enjoyed the cricket; it is always exciting when England and the West Indies play at Kensington Oval.

Thank you for your kind comments about the new team who take great pleasure to ensure that friendly efficient service is delivered.

We try and offer a variety of dishes on our buffets.
For lunch, along with the buffet we offer grilled local fish, burgers & spare ribs. For dinner we add a roast joint to the buffet.

At the moment there is a bit of a drop when you enter the sea, this is caused when a North swell develops but the sea will soon smooth that out.

I am so sorry about the bed, had I known earlier in your stay I would bough a new mattress; as we know how important a good sleep is when you are on holiday.

So upon your return next year you can test the new mattress out.

Thank you for choosing Discovery Bay Hotel for your holiday and I look forward to welcoming you back in the near future.
Sincerely,
Brian Carter

Once again stayed at this superbly located holiday which is on the beach ,at the edge of Holetown. overall there are many improvements since my last visit ,especially to the beach which has been expanded and an artificial reef created just off the shore line by depositing some very large rocks subsequently there was not one red-flag day unlike previous years when swimming was often disrupted. The food is now more consistant but falls somewhat short of Michelin standards, could be better.the service seems more focused regarding guests needs , the staff in general were friendly and accommodating. The only bad experience was that several rooms were burgled in the early hours while the guests slept, this may have turned quite ugly had they been disturbed , in this part of the world burlars are frequently armed. The wi fi is much improved but still not 100% ,weak signal in the evenings.

I am very please that you found our location to be superb. We are fortunate to be with in walking distance to shops, supermarket, banks and many restaurants & bars.

The Barbados Government implemented a massive beach restoration project on the West Coast last year. This has resulted in a greatly improved beach which is larger than most hotels in the area. There were a number of large boulders placed in the sea to create two sea walls which have attracted many fish making it ideal for snorkeling.

Our buffet menus have been expanded to offer a greater variety of dishes which has been very successful. We try and use the freshest local ingredients especially the great variety of fish.

Thank you for you kind comments on the staff who aim to provide friendly efficient service.

We have taken immediate measure to increase the security of the hotel, by increasing the lighting around the property, fitting new locks to the bedroom doors and will soon be installing CCTV cameras. This along with increased security presence should prevent a re occurrence of this unfortunate incident.

We realize how important Wi-Fi is and to this end the number of routers have been increased to gain a better signal.
Thank you very much for choosing Discovery Bay by Rex resorts and I look forward to welcoming you back in the near future.

Sincerely,
Brian Carter

I recently returned from this hotel on 3rd March this year and myself together with three other rooms were broken into and a lot of our expensive property was stolen. The police were informed along with Virgin Holidays. There are no CCTV cameras at this location and there is easy access to all rooms. BEWARE

Let me greatly apologize for this occurrence and be assured that the hotel is conducting a thorough investigation. We take this incident very seriously and have taken the below action to alleviate this from happening in the future.

Security has been beefed up, lighting has been increased through out the property and we are awaiting CCTVs which will be installed in critical areas.

The entrance locks are also being upgraded so that when the door is closed it is automatically locked.

Again please accept my sincere apologizes and I hope that we will have the pleasure of your company in the future.

Sincerely,
Brian Carter

Just back..14th March.

Endorse all said by Susan T & Jacob A. From beginning to end the improvements are tremendous. Last year reception was hopeless beyond parody. This year all paperwork was quickly and efficiently done and rum punches arrived immediately (last year there were 3 attempts to get us drinks, room wasn't ready, not sure who we were!! etc. etc..as for checking out..wrong bill, wrong room). And it carried on like this. The food is massively better, the improvements to the pool area, beach and garden restaurant are great. We understand from the impressive new manager, Brian Carter, that there are a few more tweaks and look forward to the Caribbean prints in the reception and bar areas next year. The gardens and setting continue to be superb, truly more 5star than 3. We know that the bedrooms are tired but they are a great size with good mirrors and wardrobe space and a complete refurb would cost a lot ( and then no doubt the prices would have to increase) Could we just have some hangers with no bits of rust on them and replace those old gold curtains and get the sink taps to work a bit better.. that would do fine.

We absolutely love this place... see you next year Su & Mick

Room Tip: Sea view rooms are great but cost more. The rooms overlooking the gardens still have a lovely outloo...

It was a great pleasure to meet you and I am extremely pleased that you had such a wonderful time at Discovery Bay by Rex Resorts.

We have tried really hard to offer a good variety of quality food which we have received very good comments on.

We wanted to create a good “chill out” space by the pool deck, besides the new tiles, we added high quality padded sun loungers and day beds which have transformed the area nicely. To top it off a new bar and snack kitchen was built adjacent to the pool deck so there wasn’t far to go for a cool drink or a quick snack.

We are going to do a bit of tweaking so you will need to return to check it out.

Pease let me apologize for the rusty hangers, sink taps and old curtains. The hangers and sink have been sorted but we are awaiting some local material samples for the curtains.

Thank you so much for your kind compliments and I greatly look forward to welcoming you back next year.

Sincerely,
Brian Carter
