We have just come back from our first trip to the Caribbean and were fortunate to have stayed in this beautiful hotel, with its warm friendly and helpful staff. We stayed for 10 days from the end of January. Our room, was partly looking over the pool and partly looking over the sea,was to the standard we would expect. The restaurant has a lovely view of the beach and Caribbean Sea.The food was excellent, and all staff helpful, courteous and friendly. We look forward to returning.
Thank you for a brilliant holiday

We thoroughly enjoyed our week at Mango Bay. The hotel is small and in a great location in the lively Holetown. The beach is beautiful, with plenty of sun loungers. The water sports on offer are great fun, and there is some good snorkelling to be had near the rocks about 50m out from the beach. The complimentary catamaran and glass bottom boat trips were highlights. We thought that the food was generally very good (with one or two minor exceptions) and the service was excellent. The staff are all very friendly, and we felt very welcome throughout our stay.

Room Tip: We went for a basic room and took ear plugs, as we had read about the noise of the Sunday night kara...

This is our fifth stay at Mango Bay. We had concerns about booking this year for two reasons, the waterfront restoration project and a change in manager. I was not going to write a review but for previous guests thinking of returning and others I thought it worthwhile to comment on these two issues in particular.

The waterfront restoration project is now complete in the Holetown area. Even though the beach in front of Mango Bay is not large this is a big improvement and the beach is now protected from huge wave action by an off-shore reef with the result that the near-shore water is much calmer. There also appears to be more beach chairs all with comfortable pads. During our stay the hotel was fully occupied but there didn’t seem to be the usual scramble for places to sit either on the beach or around the pool.

The new manager, Anthony Johnson, is a business-person with a different management style than Shireene, the previous manager. He is very good at attending to detail but lacks Shireene’s exceptional people skills. The good news is that Marcia, the former restaurant manager, has assumed a new position, guest services ambassador. Marcia has excellent people skills and will be an excellent complement to the new manager.

A major strength of Mango Bay is the efficient and welcoming staff and we were pleased to note that many of the same staff are still there. There are too many to note by name but special mention to Marcia, Petra, Jurnell, Michelle and Ryan who welcomed us warmly as returning guests. They, along with many other hard working, courteous and cheerful staff are what make Mango Bay such a great hotel and why guests keep returning year after year.

We have always found the food at Mango Bay to be excellent but it now seems to have gone up a notch. The new Spanish house wine is quite drinkable and an improvement. There have also been cosmetic improvements in the restaurant, newly stained tables with glass tops for example. On the down side the rather jarring piped-in music in the restaurant is not an improvement and the increased use of busboys, many of whom are not well trained, is a negative. This is in contrast to the superbly trained and courteous waitresses.

Cleston of A+Tours is still based at the hotel and offers very good personalized touring opportunities for those who wish to explore the island. His tours are highly recommended.

Room Tip: "Fourth floor deluxe rooms with large balconies and comfortable seating provide excellent views...

Dear Geographer,
Thank you for providing your feedback about your recent stay at Mango Bay. It was our pleasure to have you with us again on the beautiful island of Barbados. I am delighted to read that you were pleased once more with our efficient and welcoming staff, that the outstanding service we provide is still as you expected. I will share your wonderful comments with my team.

I am trilled that our food selection has "gone up a notch" and that you are happy with the cosmetic improvements we have made. Every guest’s experience is important to us as we strive for the finest in service and facilities. During your stay, we apparently fell short of our goals and some of your expectations. For this I apologize. I am pleased that our "superbly trained and courteous" wait staff exceeded your expectations.

Thoughtful feedback is a gift and we thank you for your input. We look forward to welcoming you back on your next visit.

First the positives. A very nice relatively small hotel close to the centre of Holetown with a number of shops, bars and restaurant within easy walking distance. We had quite a large room overlooking the pool, well equipped, safe, tea/coffee making machine, fridge, far enough away from the music from the streets and the hotel entertainment not to be to badly effected. The staff with a few exceptions were friendly helpful and efficient, Ryan at reception particularly helpful. Food was OK but I would not rave on about it. Always a reasonably choice, usually waiter served with occasional buffett or barbeque. Evening entertainment was a real mixed bag, some nights a good band or singer who really made an effort and got things going, some nights quite the opposite. A Caribbean night with stilt walker, limbo dancers etc was a nice change and very entertaining.
The pool was adequate for the size of the hotel, but quite cold and not used by many guests, plenty of sun loungers in either sun or shade depending on choice.
The big down side for us was the beach, to say it was a bit small is an understatement, at high tide there is no beach at all and not much at low tide. Also a few feet into the water there is quite a drop which made it extremely difficult to get in and out especially if you were a bit elderly( the majority) or less than fully physically fit. There was talk of installing a rope to assist getting in and out which would have been a great benefit, but this fairly simple and cheap aid did not appear while we were there. On first arrival we were very surprised how few people used the ocean for swimming but having had problems getting in and out it became fairly obvious why.
In our view a good beach and swimming in warm water are the essence of a Caribbean holiday so we wont be returning to Mango Bay.

I'm not sure about Mango Bay - is it a hotel or a resort ? ie is it full-on service or a more laid-back casual style? All the other all-inclusive establishments I've stayed at (including in Barbados) adopt a "relax, don't worry, please yourself" attitude, which means that you wander down to the restaurant pretty much when you want, there's ususally a buffet choice as well as a couple of grill alternatives or local specialties (especially in the evening) and you can sit and eat, drink and admire the view for as long as you like.
But at Mango Bay you have to make a reservation for lunch and dinner, and tough if the time slot you want is booked up. This isn't relaxing. But then I noticed that in the evening most of the other female guests were dresed up to the nines, this wasn't "Resort casual", but "Resort elegant". OK - no one wants to see swimwear and flip-flops at dinner, but long dresses and loads of jewellery! (This was mostly the Brits, and thank heavens for the Canadian casuals - who seemed to be having more fun too).
And really the restaurant was the only other area where we were disappointed. Mostly the food and service was excellent, but a couple of days it really fell below standard and sometimes at breakfast it took a long time for the food on the buffet to be replenished. One couple we met had been there 20 times (!) and said that this year it wasn't so good, but then we met someone else who was there for the sixth time and was booking up for next year there and then!
Apart from that most of the restaurant staff, the bar staff, housekeeping and pool and beach guys were first-class and overwhelmingly friendly and helpful. The one glitch we had over booking a shuttle into Bridgetown was quickly overcome by Ryan who rustled up a (free) taxi.
I can recommend the glass bottom boat trip - you get to meander past Sandy Lane (where an orange juice will set you back US$10 I am told) as well as see the fishes, coral and reef.
For people who need it there's free wi-fi and a good computer connection plus a lot of those old-fashioned things, "books", in the cool games room.
We came to relax and be pampered and most of the time it worked. We weren't the only ones who found the fairly incessant music annoying, and towards the end of our stay this was reduced in intensity and on our last night the entertainment was a lovely duo singing ballads as we sat looking out across a moonlit bay. Perfect!
PS As there seems to be a debate about drinking water, our taxi driver gave us a long lecture on the natural filtration systems on the island. It's absolutely fine to drink it from the tap and dilute your rum punch with ice. Cheers!

Room Tip: Rooms numbering 106-110 and 206-210 face the bar and so can be noisy till midnight - actually the so...

We have just visited Barbados and stayed at the Mango Bay Hotel, Staff are fabulous, food is more than adequate. Beach work has now been completed, the beach is still on the small side, when the tide is in (ie high tide), the sea comes right up to and sometimes under the sun loungers.
Beach staff were very helpful, one only had to ask and service was promptly delivered. Beach is very clean, water sports and included activities, are a real bonus. The pool could have been bigger, with most of the public sun loungers in shade.
Most of the evening entertainment was of a high standard, the one exception being on a Friday night, the woman made up for lack of singing ability with enthusiasm, (she managed to clear the terrace!).
This is a fairly small hotel that is very friendly, and I can understand why so many people are repeat customers, if we ever go back to Barbados we will stay there again.

Room Tip: The Oceanfront rooms were worth the extra.
