We're regular visitors to Barbados and have stayed at a number of hotels including Crystal Cove and the Almond Beach Club and Spa. We decided to return to Mango Bay this year - the very first hotel we ever stayed in on the island - and couldn't have been more pleased with our choice. The staff were exceedingly friendly, we had a spacious room directly leading out onto the pool - fresh sheets and towels every day - the food was great, even our daughter liked it and she can be a bit fussy. It made us wonder why we had ever stayed anywhere else, and we are already planning our return. The manageress Shireene went out of her way to accommodate all the guests (we had a bit of a mosquito problem and she was very quick to put us in touch with a doctor/pharmacy - take anti-histamines and creams with you just in case), and we thought the free trips - especially the catamaran - were excellent because we have done expensive paid-for ones before and not even seen a turtle. On this trip we saw plenty, and got a wonderful ride up the west coast and plenty of time to swim. and rum on the way back. The only thing missing is a pull-along banana ride or one of those inflatable seats, but this is more of an adults' hotel as it does not have a kids' club - and there are benefits to that! It's v.civilised and the pool never seems crowded. We wandered up to Sandy Lane's beach which is about 20 mins walk away (along the beach) on several days (all the beaches are public so it doesn't matter if you're not a Sandy Lane guest or not), grabbed some cricket at the Kensington Oval and although the new, flash Holetown shopping centre is not quite our taste (we like the original one, past the church), my husband and daughter went to the cinema there to watch a film in 3D on one of the very hot afternoons. There's lots of mooching around to be done in Holetown - the location of the hotel is superb. There was always plenty of hot water in our bedroom, and we didn't mind booking for our meals in the restaurant at all. Lots of guests were 'returners', and those new ones we met said they would like to return. I can't put it better than that. The evening entertainment was also great fun - Virgo particularly. We booked through Prestbury Travel who I always find super efficient. Sorry if this sounds like a 'love-in', but credit where credit is due.

Room Tip: Definitely go for a superior room

Our fifth visit to Mango Bay, our second in summer - in the past we visited in the October half-term. What can I say that hasn't been said so many times before? As always, Shireene and her staff made our stay perfect. Nothing was too much trouble, the beach front accommodation offered views to die for, the restaurant was unbelievably good and the whole experience left us totally relaxed.

We spent three nights at the hotel after our Carabian cruise. The hotel is well situated for walking out to shops and bars. The beach in front of the hotel is not the best( a bit rough at times and a section of stones on the sands to be negoiated before having a dip). However a short stroll will find buitifull bathing. Staff and food were excellent. Unfortunately our holiday was spoiled by the noise of the music from the bars and the Karaoke evening going on into the early hours. STANDARD ROOMS not recommended What a shame. Richard Oxford

Room Tip: Upgrade a must if you don't want to be distubed at night.

Upon arrival, we checked in, were offered welcome drinks - a choice between rum punch and fruit punch, and we were also offered wet minty towels. We were then given a tour of the hotel and shown to our rooms.

The rooms were spacious enough. The hotel provided free bottles of water and biscuits. The use of the safe was free of charge, unlike in some hotels, but if you want a mini fridge you have to pay $15 US per room per night! Beach towels and chocolates are delivered to the room each evening.

The food is very good in this hotel, and there was never any problem booking a table.

Breakfasts included pancakes, waffles or French toast, dishes of the day such as Plantain (a local delicacy), bacon, cereals, yoghurts, fresh fruit, bread etc., as well as orange juice, a juice/mocktail of the day and hot drinks - unfortunately the orange juice was very sweet and a little bit like squash, and there were no oranges for juicing.

Lunches and dinners are both À La Carte 5 times a week, and these included a dainty starter, a generous main course, and varying desserts - whilst the desserts changed daily at dinner, and were very nice, they never changed at lunch - also, they only had sorbet at 2 of the lunches - these were not officially on the menu, but they were very good, and I recommend that they always offer sorbets as a dessert at lunch. It would have been nice if they had local food such as cou cou and flying fish more often - it would be nice if they added cou cou to the side options at dinner (rice, potatoes and vegetables) - they did have foods such as sirloin steak though, which is rare for an all-inclusive hotel. Buffets sometimes had themes, such as Chinese.

Afternoon tea was available each day, which included 2 different sandwiches, cake, another treat (e.g. donuts, cookies or muffins) and scones.

The bar stocked everything you would expect, including lots of different liquors, rums, Banks beer, Coca-Cola drinks and juices. It was well-stocked, apart from towards the end of the holiday when they ran out of mint leaves so they could not make mojitos anymore. One problem is that some of the staff seem to be out of touch with what 18-year-olds look like - being asked for photo ID is fair enough - however, being told "no, these drinks are not for children" when you order a drink is not. It was slightly annoying that the bar did not open until 10am if you were on the beach earlier and wanted a soft drink - it would be good if there was a self-service soda fountain. A waiter offered us drinks on the beach each day, but this was only once in the morning and once in the afternoon, and it was rare for him to come at the right time.

The watersports shop offered activities such as waterskiing, sailing and aqua cycling - it was quite disappointing that out of the week there, there were no watersports on 3 of the days - on the of these, the sea was quite rough and there was a yellow flag, on the second day it was even rougher and there was a red flag, but on the third day the sea seemed relatively calmer, and they seemed to be slow to remove the red flag - however, they did go out of their way to open early on our last day so that we could waterski, as the rest of the morning was taken up by a catamaran trip which we had to rearrange due to the weather. I do recommend that as the hotel has a motor boat, it could purchase some rides to tow, such as rings and the Gladiator Super Mable.

The hotel offers a free glass bottom boat trip and a trip on a Stiletto catamaran. The glass bottom boat trip lasted 45 minutes, and we saw a shipwreck and fish through the glass - we were also given the opportunity to snorkel in the middle. The Stiletto catamaran trip lasted for 2 hours - firstly we were taken to a place where we swam with turtles, and then it sailed along the coast with jolly music and free drinks for the rest of the time.

There was entertainment every night - this was usually music, e.g. jazz or piano - one night there was a limbo dancing competition, followed by an impressive display with fire. The manager's cocktail party turned out to be a long speech, with a tray of cocktails sitting on the bar which they never handed out, and very limited canapés.

I was looking forward to the morning sorbets which I had read about - unfortunately, they never offered them on the beach, and we did not tend to sit by the pool.

Make sure that you checkout by 12am sharp on your departure day if you don't want to pay for another night!

Just got back from a week at Mango Bay. This was our third stay on Barbados ; stayed at Crystal Cove and the Amaryllis previously. Mango Bay was so much better. Now before I start you must know I am fussy and I was a bit worried when I read a couple of reviews just before we came here. When we booked last Autumn all reviews were good, then some posts started to be quite critical. So here is a review from a fuss-pot:

The location is absolutely perfect; west coast and right in the centre of things at Holetown so you can mooch out round shops, bars and restaurants - new shopping mall bang opposite with LV, RL, AIX etc. I adore 'beach life' and if that's your thing this is the perfect spot on the beach - there is so much going on and the beach walks and snorkelling are fantastic! The catarmaran cruise to swim with the turtles was incredible! Water-skiing is completely free of charge and Peter, the water-ski instructor is so patient and knowledgeable - I sometimes had 2 skis per day (if your legs can stand it!) this made my holiday even more perfect. Thank you Peter - hope I am mono-skiing next year when we come back!

Try the horse riding either on the beach here or ask Keesha to organise for you go to 'Jahworks' - a stable in Scotland where they take you on to Morgan Lewis beach on the east coast, where the Atlantic rolls in.

Since we were last on the west coast 8 years ago, we noticed the beach has 'shrunk' - parts of the coastline have already had work carried out to stop this happening, and the manager explained eventually some of the beach would be reclaimed. Some reviewers had complained about the beach being small, but honestly it wasn't a problem. We like to 'walk' the beach anyway... It's a beautiful beach. Come on, holidays are what you make them - you have the sun, view, a lovely spot - BE HAPPY!

Our room(s), balcony and views were amazing (Penthouse suite) and we were very comfortable. We had an enormous bed and plunge pool on the balcony and spent time just admiring sunsets with the fab cocktails from the bar.. bliss!

The hotel itself, although not as good as some we have stayed in elsewhere in the world, is just charming, quaint and typically bajun with a wonderful atmosphere; fantastic staff and the other guests were also so friendly and added to our holiday. The staff are the friendliest hotel staff I have every experienced and in many ways they make the place what it is - Keesha and Erica on reception are delightful! All the guys at the bar who make fab cocktails - one of the best margaritas I have had (and I am fussy with my margaritas!)

The restaurant has lovely views (as good as any of the top-notch restaurants along this coastline - we have tried The Cliff, Daphnes, Sandy lane and Tides) OK, the food is not as good as these places, but you are not paying those prices! We didn't expect the food to be as good - it was simple but well cooked. I had fresh fish everyday cooked with spices or marinaded, along with choice of rice, potatoes, etc. If I was to make a complaint it would be to have more vegetables and more tomatoes and salads available. BBQ nite was lovely, with a more casual feel and the fish straight off the grill was fab! What we had was plenty, especially when you have 3 courses for lunch and dinner and afternoon tea inbetween! Booking a table was not a problem, as some have stated - we booked a whole week in advance.

If you want top notch 5 star AI with lots of choices available go to Mexico for your 9 restaurants, bars etc...in Barbados the hotels are just not like that - it's different here - more colonial and simplified. Even Sandy Lane doesn't have that kind of choice! You do, however, have some lovely restaurants to to choose from if you fancy a change. If you want a typically Bajun hotel with the perfect location, fab views, and a wonderful charm about it, that I just can't explain - it was just there - then here is the place.

Room Tip: Ocean View or Penthouse

This was our 6th visit to barbardos we love it! we have stayed at 6 different hotels at 6 different points on the island and mango bay has been the best!
Myself,my husband and our two small children stayed at mango bay (brilliant location!)for 10 nights! We stayed in a one bedroom apartment (12) which was very nice modern and clean, however if you do stay in the apartments you do feel alittle bit separated from the main hotel!
We were fortunate enough to be offered a room upgrade in the main hotel which we gratefully accepted and moved into a superior room overlooking the pool which was lovely, again modern and very clean with a huge very comfortable bed! And it was much nicer to be in the main block of the hotel!
The staff are superb at this hotel and were lovely with us and our kids, to say the hotel has a lot of older guests and hardly any children our children were very well looked after and catered for brilliantly!
The pool area is lovely and more then adequate for a hotel of this size as is the beach!
There was a day or two when the sea swelled and so the beach vanished, but that's Mother Nature and can't be helped and its dead easy to hop on a bus and explore a different beach! (And the hotel give you a packed lunch to take with you!)
I'm a very fussy eater and I thought the food was excellent and different every night and on the odd night I didn't like anything on the menu they cooked me something I did like,
Nothing's to much trouble I found!
The hotel is near lots of lovely restaurants all within walking distance if you fancy a change.
The trips out that are included in the all inclusive package are excellent and so is the free use of padellos etc.
All in all we had a great experience at mango bay!

We stayed at Mango Bay recently and wish that we had been served the " good / excellent" food that some other reviewers experienced during this time. This would have meant that we were able to enjoy more than one meal in the seven days we were there. The food was poor overall.

Room Tip: Upgrade to " ocean view room" essential.
