“GREAT HOTEL, GREAT PEOPLE, GREAT FOOD, GREAT VALUE.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 19, 2012

My husband and I are just back from our honeymoon a week in Mango Bay, Barbados. Still feel a bit of jet lag at work. ^^

As it is our first time in Barbados, we booked everything through VirginHolidays. Arrival time and airport transfer went on smoothly with no problem at all and Virgin made it so convenient for travellers, for example, there is someone holds Virgin sign on arrival and directs you to the Virgin desk outside of the airport where some other Virgin people wait for and give you bottle of frozen water as well as the welcome pack about Barbados tour with the meeting time with Virgin representative on the front of the pack. In the meanwhile you are also allocated to the one of the Suntour taxis to head to the hotel. It took between 35-45 min from Bridgetown airport to Mango Bay hotel depends on who you are arranged to travel with. You may share the taxi with people from different hotel and they will be dropped by on the way. You can do a bit of sightseeing in the car and the driver gives brief introduction of the city and some place of interests on the way. We were full of curiosity as we are first time in Barbados in Caribbean.

On the arrival in Mango Bay, we were welcomed with rum punch by the receptionist and he was very nice and friendly. After having filled in couple of forms quickly, we had a little hotel tour with him and he booked us in for the dinner when passing by the restaurant. (if you fly with Virgin Atlantic, the arrival time is almost the same to us and it is late for the lunch, but around the time of afternoon tea). Although the lunch and dinner need to be booked in for the time slot, we found that no hassle at all, since you can simply give your preferred time slot on the way to your breakfast in the restaurant.

After that, we were taken to the room (the hotel staff would put your luggages in the room on your behalf as well which was very nice of them), and we booked standard one bedroom apartment, and we supposed to upgrade the room if the room is not good as we read the reviews that standard rooms are very noisy and not nice. But it was beyond our expectation, which was very clean and spacious. It has a bit of ocean view from the balcony with two beach chairs to relax on.

We met Virgin rep and he basically introduced us with a bit of Barbados, but more about activities and tours that we can do while in Barbados. You can ask any questions and he is very energetic ManU fan and will be more than happy to help you out. We booked Virgin Ahoy, Submarine and Jeep Safari with him, all of which were good. He will also arrange returning airport transport for you once you let him know your departure time. Do please make sure you are arranged at least 24 hours before and get the confirmation sheet from the reception that the rep has left for you.
Virgin Ahoy is highly recommended, and it is really worth it. You will have this Tiami cruise and you will spend around 5 hours on that. You will have chance to stop some places to snorkel and to swim with turtles and to feed them and to touch them. You will also be given unlimited drinks on the cruise and very yummy home-barbequed lunch as well. The crew and captain are all very nice and friendly. If you are swimmer, it is really worth it. Even if we are not swimmers, we enjoyed a lot the cruise.

Well ,Submarine, we bought VIP for that, which is not worth as it has no difference to the normal ones and all you get at the end of the day, you will have priority ahead of the people and you board submarine first and get front seat basically just behind the captain. What I personally believe, wherever you sit in submarine, the views you get are the similar. It was a good experience, but no need to go for the VIP. We spent money on VIP as this was our honeymoon. However, if we have known that it has almost no difference to normal ones, we would not go for VIP. It was waste of money. It was more than BBD100 difference per person.

The Jeep Safari was worth too. It will give you better knowledge about the island and it gives you different experience which you never have here in the UK. Basically, you will get the one of the 10 seats at the back of the jeep car and the driver just talks to you through speaker while travelling around. He gives you detailed introduction about the Island and the tour covers almost all the parishes in the Island. You will be taken to the places, parks where you would never go if you travel on your own and he explains everything on what you might be curious. You will be stopped in Sugar Cane hotel to have lunch. After that you will be prepared for the return journey.

Okay, let’s go back to hotel, Mango Bay to talk more about the hotel itself. It is lovely hotel and all the people work for the hotel, such as receptionist, bar tender, waitress and waiters are all superb and friendly. The hotel manager looks so professional and comes to you to greet you and to welcome you at one of lunch times. The swimming pool is in good size and never packed. The beach chairs are also reasonably available when needed. Bars are also not so crowed so you can be served after for a short while even if you are in the queue. The food is so nice and delicious. Some days you may have buffet lunch or dinner, even though the food is limited by variety, you can always order some food from the kitchen depends on the availability of the food and chef. We are not fussy on food, so we were just happy to have buffet. Drinks are provided unlimitedly except for bottle of champagne, bottle of wines and bottle of water. All the cocktails and glasses of wines are all inclusive. Sometimes bar tenders come to you at the swimming pool to take order which is so impressive.

What else? You will be kept awake by the tree frogs and the sound of current at night, but you will soon be used to that after couple of days. Mosquitoes are the most annoying stuff for me, I had to buy cream to apply on the bits, as my feet was swollen by the mosquito bit. But the hotel staff will spray the insecticide after you go out for dinner.

Overall we are very happy with the honeymoon and I want to say thank you Mango Bay which made this through.
Good luck to those travelling to Barbados and you will not regret to stay in Mango Bay. We had a chance to talk to the people who did not book via VirginHolidays, and we have been told it is a bit cheaper to book it yourselves, but we were already satisfied and are happy with the service provided by Virgin.

We returned 16/9 after a great relaxing end of summer 10 day break.
Friendly staff with a nice little intro tour & then to our room - 311 & what a view.
Great patio furniture too with our room. Very comfy bed & lots of pillows.
Efficient air conditioning & a separate multi-speed ceiling fan too.
Free water bottles in the fridge (top up free at bar machine).
Complimentary catamaran trip swimming with turtles, Glass bottom boat trip swimming with fish, water ski tuition, sea kayaks, pedalo & small catamaran all included.
Pool was always clean & we were informed by the Manager that some tiling renovation is to happen in the next 2 weeks.
NIce cool TV / Reading / free PC (& wi-fi) room.
Food was excellent & with a choice of indoor or outdoor seating.
We would certainly visit again & you should too !

Myself and Mark had our Civil Partnership in July, this was our honeymoon and to say we felt relaxed was an understatement! We stayed for Ten nights from the 3rd of September, welcomed with cooled face cloths and Rum Punch. Check in was quick followed by a tour of the hotel, first impressions were fantastic.

Our room was 305 in the Superior Block it was spacious, clean and had everything you needed, well apart from a couple of chairs on the balcony wouldn't go a miss thats a small detail. The Bed was so comfortable and slept so well, the beds are amde everyday and you can either have clean bedding or save the planet and have them changed when you desire. The same applies to bath towels.

You need to book your lunchtime and evening meal table this ensures your service is quick and efficient. The restaurant staff are all amazing nothing is to much trouble, the food is is fantastic and you can always ask for a large portion or try two starters if you cant decide. If there is nothing on the menu or at the buffets you can ask for almost anything and they will try there best to accommodate your needs.

The swimming pool is kept clean and is so refreshing to get in after soaking up the rays! (The hotel have planned maintenance to address the missing mosaic tiles around the top of pool) You get Beach Towels everyday and we had no problems at getting a sun bed.

The Bar is Excellent, there is a fantastic Cocktail list and they will make anything you wish i must recommend the Mudslide which isn't on the list! The waiter Peter is amazing, he comes and takes your orders whilst your at the pool side or on the beach front and always has a smile.

We hired a car for a few days which was fantastic, if you are worried about driving hire the car for a Sunday as the roads are quiet in the morning. You cant get lost really just keep the coast to your left or right and in sight and you cant go wrong. The glass bottom boat and catamaran to see the turtles is a must get a waterproof camera you can get them from the local shopping centre just past the petrol station unless you want to go into Limegrove and pay Loui Vuitton Prices hehe.

Any beach or street traders a simple NO THANK YOU normally works. Oistins organised via the Hotel on a Friday Night is also a must just to experience the culture, the meal is included and travel.

You will love Mango Bay we would recommend it to anyone that wants total relaxation, the sound of the sea and the heat is just perfection. We made some great friends and had some even greater laughs!!!

If anyone is thinking of going to Mango Bay and wants reassurance in view of the negative comments please feel free to ask.

Enjoy! We will without doubt be returning!

From the moment we arrived on 1st September until we left on 15th we were looked after extremely well and were able to just sit back and relax and enjoy our holiday. Our room 419 was spacious, bed enormous and very comfortable and, although we had been told there may be noise in standard room from 2nd Street, very quiet.

Although booking for lunch and dinner have to be booked at breakfast we didn't find this a problem and ensures that waiting times are not too long. It saves any pressure wondering if there will be an available table - something that has happened previously at other hotels when no booking system.

We were not too keen on the food on offer on the buffet night so requested a different meal and this was superb. If you do not see something that you like on the menu which is available at breakfast time each day you just ask for something that you fancy.

The staff to holidaymaker ratio is high so the service in all areas is first class. I have never felt so relaxed on a holiday before and we certainly will be back.

Room Tip: Can only say that 419 was a good one in the standard grade as didn't see any others. Ours had a...

Hotel Check-in - this was dealt with efficiently and we were brought a rum punch. There were a lot of forms to sign but essentially done quickly and the staff were very friendly. Our bags were taken up to the rooms and we were given a tour of the hotel on our way up with another couple who had arrived at the same time.

Hotel Rooms - Our room was comfortably spacious, clean, cool and overlooking the pool area. The bed was large and very comfortable. The bathroom also clean, the shower was good. Shampoo/conditioner etc come in ceramic jugs avoiding the waste of those miniatures. There are sensors on the door and windows so that the AC is not trying to cool the whole of the Caribbean down - a green energy-saving initiative. A hairdryer was in the drawer which was fine and fortunately the socket was close to a mirror ( they aren't usually!). As usual though there were not enough coat hangers in the wardrobes - you come on holiday with clothes for evenings in 'elegantly casual' establishments which are going to need hanging up - give us more coat hangers!!!! Our childrens' room was slightly smaller than ours but did have twin beds as requested and overlooked reception. The reported noise from the street was only evident on the middle Sunday evening and even then did not stop us from sleeping.

Wifi - reliable, fast and available all around the hotel, even in the rooms.

Hotel Food
Breakfast - fresh fruit, yogurts, toast, then there is a station making omlettes, eggs fried or poached, then there was also bacon, sausage, scrambled eggs, beans, fried plantains, waffles etc.
Lunch - you need to book your time slot for lunch then there was a menu offering starters & mains ranging from club sandwich-type things, burgers & chips and usually a choice of 3 casserole or fish dishes, and then desserts
Dinner - Again a time slot needs to be booked but the food at dinner was very disappointing. Having read previous reviews before travelling we had great hopes for the food but having described them as being a bit like school dinners my son stated that his school dinners were better than these evening meals. A great shame as this was the only disappointment at this lovely hotel. We ended up eating out on all-but-2 evenings and had far better meals at the places locally around Holetown. Breakfast & lunch were fine although it would have been nice to have had a greater selection of salads available at lunchtime.

Pool area/sunbeds - As it was end Aug/beg Sept the hotel seemed fairly quiet and so there didn't appear to be too much pressure for sunbeds. Pool towels are provided each day and people seemed to respect the code for not saving sunbeds. There are some on decking next to the beach with cabana-style canopies (one of which is used for weddings) with some more on the grassy area behind the decking. There are parasols available and the staff manning the waterspouts will move them around if you ask them. We didn't sit around the pool as this seemed to be used predominantly by families with small children although again there did seem to be plenty of sunbeds during the time we were here. Throughout the day Peter or Donald came round the sunbeds taking orders for drinks, very welcome.

Water-sports - there is 1 Hobby-cat, 3 single & 1 double kayak, 1 pedalo and water-skiing all included in the AI. Again, as the hotel was not overly busy it was generally possible to take whatever you wanted although it was best to book a slot just to be sure. There are also the glass bottomed boats and the catamaran trip to swim with the turtles which we did. It leaves at 10.00 each morning and stops for a good long swim with the turtles. They even have some fish for feeding/attracting the turtles which swim right amongst you - take a waterproof camera to capture the moment!

Bar - there is a bar providing drinks and cocktails. Service here was always prompt and friendly. They will make whatever cocktail you would like, you are not restricted to the cocktail menu, they have their 'little book' in a drawer to look up the recipes if needs be. We never found the bar to be crowded as meal times are staggered and even in the evening the bar has gone pretty quiet by 10pm. One thing that would be welcome would be a small bowl of crisps/nuts/olives with drinks in the evening.

Spa - not used as very expensive

My wife and I spent a few nights on Barbados (September 9-12, 2012), and had an extremely pleasurable stay at Mango Bay! We arrived from our JFK / NYC flight on Jet Blue, and immediately went to Barbados' west coast, where Mango Bay is located. The reception greeted us warmly, gave us a brief tour and had our luggage brought to the room.

We had a 2nd floor ocean-front room, that looked out at the beautiful blue sea. The room had a nice balcony that had 2 very comfortable chairs along with a nice hammock! The king-size bed was comfortable, the bathroom roomy. Nothing luxurious about this room, but it was clean, good sized, great views and efficient housekeeping staff. There is a free-form pool, that is set in a courtyard part of the hotel. That this property is on the smaller side, everything is close to each other, which is very convenient. The hotel offers a very, very small gym.

There is one restaurant, that serves breakfast, lunch, dinner and traditional British-styled :high tea". The a la carte service was extremely accommodating and efficient, and the food choices were plentiful and DELICIOUS!. The bar staff couldn't do enough for you, and the array of standard cocktails, wine, beer, soft drinks and typical "Caribbean concotions" would please anyone!

While we were there, there was an included catamaran snorkeling trip, a very nice touch. Some negatives, and not the hotel's fault. September is a bit rainy, which makes the flies come out of nowhere. Be forewarned, and pack a spray can of insect repellent, as they will bother you during your time on the beach!

Just outside the hotel, a short block away, is a high-end shopping mall (Lauren, DKNY, etc.) as well as many local restaurants and bars. Overall, we enjoyed our time immensely, and the staff couldn't have been nicer. A solid 3.5 star resort, with an amazing staff!

Room Tip: Go for the ocean-front rooms, you will not be disappointed!
