“Very nice place to stay”
Reviewed July 20, 2012

Stayed here last year for horseback riding and relaxing. Beautiful place, very good food (vegetarian as well), good starting point for day trips. (for example to Siena) Staff is friendly enough, but you do get charged for extra services, like the pick up service. The bill for horseback riding was (in my case) also higher than expected. (Wifi was free though)
The horses are taken care of adequately, though they're not being pampered the way you probably would your own horse.
The experience overall was almost perfect. By the way: I think this is a great place to stay for non-horse-lovers as well.

We stayed at the Hotel Prategiano for five nights of our trip to Tuscany. We chose this place for the riding and were really delighted with our overall experience.

The views from the Hotel were great, the hotel was cute and rustic very Italian with good food and a veggie option every night. The rooms were quite old fashioned but very comfortable. We were surprised it was not busier - but we had the pool to ourselves after riding at times so that was really nice. There was a party on the Saturday night with a bar-b-q mainly friends of the owners but we were all invited too! We noticed that Tony and Cherie Blair had ridden there but no gossip was to be had on their riding skills!

The location was good for touring and we spent a lovely evening in Massa Marritima a hillside town.

The riding was great and we cannot think of a better way to see the Tuscan Hill towns than by horseback. We visited the river and nearly took a dip as my horse found the water so inviting! But you could swim with the horses if you wished. It was very relaxed. The Marrema horses were fantastic, keen but well mannered and beautiful too. Quite rounded from their winter break.

We had two nice ride leads - an American girl and a German girl, plus the Italian brothers who are sons of the owners - we think there were romances blossoming - watch this space! Our fellow riders were good fun and we wished we had longer to get to know them.

I think the place would be good for beginners as well as experienced riders - really faultless.

My daughter and I spent four nights here in Sept. 2011. There is no question this place is absolutely beautiful -- inside and out. Wonderful setting in the hills of Tuscany. Go to the middle of nowhere and keep going and that's where this hotel is. Beautiful hotel and lovely room. We went specifically for the horseback riding which was fantastic. The horses were mild mannered, knew their jobs and were friendly and well cared for although they were getting a bit skinny from all the work they do hauling the tourists around. They are off in the winter and they fill back out again the owners said. The horses work HARD going up and down the steep hills in the area, but they handle it well and seem to enjoy it, The hotel has unlimited routes you can take with the horses and they're very flexible about what trips you want to take. Because it was in the middle of nowhere and we had no car, we were forced to eat at the hotel. The food was good and there was plenty of variety for most anyone's taste. The problem was, that was the only place we could go to, so if you didn't like it you were stuck. We liked it. Another problem was the pick up service from the train station. The young men that drove us back and forth were very nice and efficient. What I didn't like was the price. 60 euro per person each direction!!! I felt that cost was outrageous and it doesn't say on the web site that they will charge it. It just said they would be happy to pick you up at the Follonica rail station. When I called to confirm our arrival the day before they sprung that 60 euro thing on me. I was kinda of stuck at that point. The travel cost was in the brochure they have at the hotel though. I felt that all things considered they should provide the train station ride for free or a small fee like 10 euro just to cover their costs. Another down side was the lack of Internet. Yes I know were on vacation in the middle of nowhere but the lack of internet really bothered my 21-year old daughter. They had a computer in the lobby but there was a time limit and I think a charge. So the food was good, the location amazing, the horses fantastic, but the place had a weird feel about it that we couldn't put our finger on.....The staff wasn't overly friendly which might be part of it. Not rude, just not friendly. I think this place would be perfect for honeymooners or if you want a vacation where relaxation is more important than fancy dining or bars. I would recommend it and would probably go back again.

We are glad that you enjoyed your stay. Sorry, that none of us recommended you the 10 minute walk to the small village nearby where you find a pizzeria, a restaurant and 2 bars. We understand that also if you enjoyed our meals, having had dinner in Montieri would have been an additional nice experience.

We also regret the misunderstanding about the cost for the transfer and internet. We controlled your bill and found everything correct: No charge for the unlimited internet use and for the transfer from Follonica to Montieri we asked a refund of expenses of Euro 60 (not per person but per direction = 45 km !!) like proposed by email. We can imagine that internet connections are much faster in America, but here – in the middle of nowhere - we are extremely glad to have ADSL. So, the we are waiting for you to come back and next time we will offer you also a free pickup from the train station.

We stayed at Prategiano for a week this summer. Our daughter and my niece (10 and 12 years old) went horseback riding all day long, my husband and I made several unbelievably beautiful walks (the trails start right at the hotel) and further more we were very busy with relaxing, as Prategiono is made for that... We met the girls at the daily picnic at the lovely places that Andrea and his crew know very well to find. We stayed in the spacious family room, which is simple but meeting all your needs. The food in the restaurant is amazing, the staff very friendly. In short: we will definitely go back to Prategiano next year!

Room Tip: For familys the family room with two bedrooms and a living is perfect.

The wife and I stayed here for a week as part of a mini tour of italy for our honeymoon. We were not disappointed and were sad to leave for a 5* in Rome!!!

It is worth noting that Hotel Prategiano is exactly what it looks like and does exactly what it says on the tin: A rustic, family ran, countryside retreat set in some of the most splendid surroundings. If you are expecting the Ritz then please do not apply, as if you are fussy, you will always be so.

After the long drive from Venice we descended into the hills and after soaking up the epic scenery and beautiful hilltop medieval villages, we would have been disappointed if Hotel Prategiano had been any different.

We were initially booked for 5 half day rides, but we ended up doing the full day 'river ride,' which included a camp fire style barbacue and picnic lunch. We reccommend that you give this full day a go.

The riding was flexible and was booked by an informal chat in the evening with the guide, Andrea, who was always full of humour and easygoing. They generally cater for all riders and can tailor the ride to suit, with plenty of opportunties for a canter. If you are not into horse riding, the area is a haven for ramblers/hikers, mountain bikers and quad bike enthusiasts. It is also nice to have the option to chill out by the pool or in the jaccuzzi, which always goes down well after a day in the saddle.

The whole beauty of this location is that you are surrounded by some of the most beautiful scenery and medieval, hilltop villages, the nearest being a 10 minute walk into Montieri. Be mindful that whilst most at the hotel speak excellent english, the locals have never really had a need to, so you may need to brush up on a few Italian phrases! To make the most of this location, I suggest that you consider hiring a car, as we did. The beach at Follonica or Punt Ala is only 40 mins away, Siena the same and Florence and Pisa approximately 1 hour 30 mins.

The food on the whole was very good, comprising of basic rustic dishes and tradtional dishes for the region to roast beef and mash. I could not fault it, although we did break it up a little by eating out on various evenings.

The rooms were basic, but clean and cumfortable, and in general keeping of the surroundings. On the whole the staff were always helpful or at hand to fix a drink or snack. Brando whips up a good spritzer or cocktail.

To conclude we enjoyed every minute of our stay at Hotel Prategiano, and look forward to having the opportunity to revisit on our anniversaries for years to come.

My Girlfriend and I love to horse ride and road bike. The hotel and area in general is superb for both activities, The Hotel is simply amazing, it feels like a large chalet. The staff were funny and welcoming and to be honest it felt like we had made friends rather than been waited on or just another customer. They could not do enough to accommodate us. You wanna ride? Ride, you wanna chill? chill, easy. Most notably I have to say the food was incredible.. Everyday we were treated to the most delicious traditional foods from the region. Lots of wild deer, wild rabbit and of course wild boar which is prevelent in the area we found out. Being British it was so refreshing to be surrounded by other nationalities rather than our own. We felt totally at easy. I actually proposed to my girlfriend on an all day horse ride. The luch was again more than we had bargained for, the Italians love to eat and be together. Such a memorable experience. If you road bike the roads are infinity better than any in England and you cannot take a bad photo of the views and vistas. Every village is beautiful. After 4 hours riding around the hills the hot tub was more than welcome! I would go back tommorow and my girlfriend is planning the honeymoon
