As I travel a lot in the course of my duties (I am a tour guide), I will only comment on places that I have been to on several occasions and where I have always had consistent experiences.
This cosy guest house, a few kilometres out of Kokstad, ticks all the right boxes! A real home from home, built in a log cabin style around a small lake. Meals served in the restaurant overlooking the lake. Dinners (the restaurant is closed on Saturdays and Sundays) are delicious “a la carte” country comfort food. It is a close call between the Carpetbagger Steak and the Ox Tail as to which is my favourite! Limited beverages are served but you may BYO. Breakfasts are great too, take your time to enjoy the variety on offer.
An added comfort are the electric blankets for those cold nights. There is free wifi in the lounge and if you have your clubs handy, there is a driving range too.
Old Orchard is so charming you wont want to leave!

B&B some 5 min out of the city. The owners are friendly, the cheapest rooms are basic and rustic. For us it was a stop over and fullfilled its needs. From the first appearance the city does not offer much but we were also not looking for attractions. We were not able to find a decent restaurant and ended up in a chain steak house on McDonalds level. Same for breakfast, we stopped driving around and used KFC.

We have been to this establishment twice now. Our first stay was in the outer rooms(away from the dam) and they were adequate, clean and well kept. On that stay the resturant was open and gave a really pleasant atmosphere with good food and wine, served on the banks of the dam. Breakfast was also included in the cost. This stay (peak time) the resturant was closed witch was a pity as it was the atmosphere (after traveling all day) that we were after. The rooms we stayed in this time were great, and on the bank of the dam. Place for the gents to fish, Really scenic. Really bad time to close the eating portion of the guesthouse...We will however visit again at some stage, as it is a really peaceful setting. Swimming pool is rated as poor because they had a bad storm that left issues with the pool...... was poor when we saw it, but i'm sure that they should fix this up.

Room Tip: Try to request a room on the dam, with the bird life and the scenic view, this is a must.

Kokstad is an ideal spot to rest when you are driving from Drakensbergen to Durban/Eastern Cape. Conveniently prized, amazing friendly staff at a lake in a valley. Never seen so much birds around my accommodation. The huts are hand-built by the staff and have the feel of a Thai/Maledives resorts. The Balcony is above the water and the atmosphere is amazing. We were completely relaxed when we continued our journey to Port Elizabeth and Cape Town.

Room Tip: Ask for the honeymoon suite!

I have had the fortune of visiting the Old Orchard both with my little family and with a group of friends. The service is very warm and friendly, the location is breath taking, and the food is fresh, and delicious! A really short distance from Kokstad. Would recommend it to everyone. :)

Room Tip: They also have a driving range, with rooms over looking a dam with ducks and several other bird life. Kids love it! :)
