“Good choice on coast south of Durban”
Reviewed March 15, 2012

Excellently run and maintained self-catering accommodation on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast. Well-designed and efficiently equipped with all necessary items for a self-catering stay Emerald Cove is situated near grocery stores and super-markets, but for those choosing to eat out instead also near several restaurants. The chalets are attractively laid out and situated virtually on the beachfront with just an attractive barrier of tropical vegetation between the units and the beach. Rates are reasonable for the type and standard of accommodation. The management are most efficient and obliging and went out of their way to meet our requirements and ensure that our brief stay was a pleasant one.

Emerald Cove realy lived up to our family holiday expectations. The accommodation is attractive and well maintained and the easy access to the beach means you can come and go with ease. Judy is an attentive hostess who anticipated my children's needs and supplied us with local tips and insight. The cost of the stay was affordable and proved to be great value for money. I would certianly recommend this accommodation.

Where should I start ?
So much to say about this lovely Beach front paradise. Let's start with the service which is impeccable. Judy , the owner is warm, welcoming & very professional. She knows the area inside out & can recommend all kinds of activities to those who want to explore the area on foot, by car, air etc. Emerald Cove is ideally located to visit the region or just chill out at the beach. The beach is literally on your doorstep. No roads to cross, just walk out of the compound & the beach is yours. Peaceful out of season and busy with surfers & families in the high season.

The chalets : good size for those who come in a large group or cosy enough for those on their own. This is the 2nd time I stay at Emerald Cove & have no complaints , only compliments to make & recommend to all those who are looking for a very well run B&B / self catering venue on the coast to try for themselves. I hope to go back to South Africa next year & would not stay anywhere else on the South Coast.

Judy's organisational skills are beyond anything one can imagine, she organises airport transfers for those who need it, helps out with logistics in the area & pro active . + Never unpleasant which is a pleasure considering how unpleasant & rude some people can be in the hospitality business but none of that at Emerald Cove ...

I've been told that there will be more services added to Emerald Cove if there is a demand for activities such as surfing lessons, fitness training etc .... let's all keep an eye on this venue.

Why excellent location?
1. The swimming beach is two steps away. There are lifeguards until 5 pm. We caught quiet days before school break, and animated days once holidays kicked in.
2. Unique experience watching the dolphins at sunrise! Enjoyable walks on the shore to Uvongo waterfall.
3. Shopping centre just 1 km away. Whether you need groceries, clothes, shoes, jewelry, maps, haircut, toys...it's right there for you.
4. There are many restaurants if you don't feel like bbq-ing. We found a wide variety of food at affordable prices.
Why wonderful hosts?
1. Judy and Peter are just naturally friendly and helpful. They do care about their customers, and they pay attention to every aspect to ensure an overall comfortable accommodation for their guests.
2. The units are fully equipped (including lock-box or safe) and tastefully furnished. They are cleaned daily. Judy's garden completes the picture; the indoor and outdoor together create a relaxing and pleasant atmosphere.
3. A welcoming fruit basket and a small vase with fresh flowers show their attention to detail and their strive to provide more than great service to their guests.
4. When we asked about suggestions re local trips or sightseeing, Judy and Peter were more than happy to help.
Emerald Cove is in our hearts!

Emerald Cove is a neat place located right off the beach. Our hostess was very friendly and the staff were very helpful. It's not fancy but serviceable and probably not a bad place to stay with your family.

As a young married family living in South Africa in the 80s and early 90s, we used to stay in a hotel at Shelly Beach that is no longer there (Skipper's).

We have now stayed at Emerald Cove, Shelly Beach, KwaZulu-Natal about half a dozen times over the last 6 years and love it every time. The thatched chalets are comfortable with everything we needed for a quiet vacation. We have had the three bed roomed chalet a few times as well as the two bed roomed chalets on other occasions.

The gate at the back of the property opens out onto St. Michael's beach. Every morning I would get up before sunrise and photograph the occasion (see my photos).

Judy, who owns the property with her husband, runs the place and it is like being a guest in a home without all the responsibility of being a guest. Every time we visit KwaZulu-Natal we make sure we have at least a few days here.

The Shelly Center within a good walk's distance or a very short car drive will satisfy all your needs. There is a good kitchen in each chalet. The chalets are clean and excellent value especially if go out of season (when we think it is nicer anyway). Check with Judy to avoid local school holidays.
