“Stay away!”

We stayed at this hotel as we were part of a classic car group organised at the hotel.

If you have to go to this industrial part of Germany, and you want a peaceful night's sleep, avoid this hotel at all costs. It is situated near the motorway and near the train tracks. Freight trains thunder by all night and, unless you are in room at the back, you will not sleep. There is no air conditioning so you may want to open the window: unadvisable!

The rooms are of a good size and well finished but they, and in particular, the bathrooms, are dark as the lighting is poor. Towels are small, the only soap available is from Dove dispensers and the door from the bedroom to the bathroom is a sliding one without any sound proofing.

Breakfast buffet is a plus point but the food was otherwise disappointing.

Overall definitely not an international hotel and staff seemed in very short supply.

I stayed at the Hotel Gladbeck Van Der Valk for 8 nights on business while attending a trade show in Dusseldorf. If the price wasn’t so cheap (76 Euros per night) and I could have found another hotel that was reasonably priced near Dusseldorf, I would have packed up and left!

The hotel exterior looks like it was built in the 70’s with an older European look. The lobby, restaurant and hotel bar all look very nice and have probably been refurbed in recent years. The hotel restaurant served a nice buffet breakfast every morning that was included in the room rate. The dinner menu and food were also a good value.

The hotel rooms were horrible! I had to immediately change the first room they gave me. It overlooked the highway and train tracks in the front of the building. Even during the day with the windows closed, you could hear the rumble of cars and trucks on the highway. I later found out that the noise from the trains going by during the night was worse. I was able to get a quiet room in the back.

The rooms don’t appear to have been redecorated since the hotel was built. Carpeting was dark and worn, the bed was sagging and needed a new mattress, ugly wood paneled walls, not enough lighting in the room and very small showers. The rooms are not air conditioned so the only way to get some air is to open the window. Don’t plan to spend a lot of time in your room unless you enjoy German television.

If you’re traveling with a laptop computer and need telephone access to plug in your modem … forget about it! Many of us tried to disconnect the room phone and plug in our computers without success. When I questioned one of the hotel staff about the phone lines, I was told that their maintenance people knew about the problem and were trying to fix the lines. She couldn’t give me an estimate of when the problem would be fixed. It never was fixed during my stay. They did allow me to plug my computer into the fax line located in their management office but the speed was too slow.

Don’t even attempt to get any laundry done here! Most hotels take your laundry in the morning and have it back to you in the evening. I left some clothes to be cleaned on a Friday morning and finally got them back days later on Tuesday night. Every time I inquired about where my clothes were, it was always some excuse and a promise of tomorrow.

Even the bartender had an excuse. We asked him late one evening in the bar if he could change the music over the sound system. It sounded like cats were being tortured. He came back to us and told us that they have access to only one channel.

Lastly, you won’t find much to do within close walking distance of this hotel. There’s a small bar, an old mansion restaurant and a miniature golf course. Depending upon the time of day, you may get to hear and see a large number of barking dogs (mostly German Shepard’s) at the nearby obedience school.
