“West Bay Lodge Great Again”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 23, 2008

My wife, my sister-in-law and I returned to West Bay Lodge in March of 2008. My wife and I spent a week there in June of 2007. Owners Milos and Celeste have improved on what seemed to already be perfect. We were treated as family more than customers.

Celeste booked us a room at Bananarama for our first night because West Bay Lodge was full for that night. We once again did our diving with Bananarama and were again completely satisfied. My wife's sister completed her open water course. She was given one-on-one training for most of the course.

Milos and Celeste rented a bus that took us to the "Crab Races", a fun fund raising activity for local schools put on by another resort. It was heartwarming to see the passion of these business owners who genuinely cared more about helping people than making money.

We loved our experience on Roatan once again. One difference between our trip in March and the one last June was the number of Cruise ships. Last June we had only one all week. This March I think there was at least one every day. Some of the tourist attractions catered mostly to the cruise ships. For example, we wanted to Dive with the Dolphins at Anthony's Key Resort, but all the spaces were reserved by cruise ships. We were there this time in the midst of the high season. I don't believe it would be like this most of the year. We spent most of our days diving with Bananarama so the crowds from the cruise ships did not affect us much.

In short, we loved West Bay Lodge, Bananarama and Roatan. Hope to return.

The hustle and bustle of the urban 9-5 had pushed us to our limits. Based largely on the splendid reviews we read on TripAdvisor, we decided to spend a week in Roatan at the West Bay Lodge. As soon as we set foot on the property, we were surrounded by lush tropical plants, banana & avocado trees, and mosquitos! But even the pesky bugs could not stop us from having our best vacation to date.

"Cough, cough...Hola, Como Esta?... Cough, cough" said Haymish as we entered the palapa for breakfast. Haymish: entertainer, lover... parrot! Well, there were five birds: four parrots and one toucan. Haymish and his girlfriend Coco were the funniest, hanging out by our side at breakfast and eyeing our daily fruit. Unlike the review two stories down, we actually liked the birds. Two weeks later, I'm still mimicking them. "Hola, como esta?" Now who's the parrot? ME!

Crab races? Yes, put a bunch of hermit crabs in a cup, shake them up, spill them out in the middle of a drawn circle and pray for your crab to cross the line first. Surprisingly, it's equally as fun as shooting craps. Crabs, craps .... What's the difference? ... The crab race benefits schools on Roatan.

Mama Kitty, she's a fierce one, scaring off dogs three times her size. One of six cats at West Bay Lodge, she definitely won our approval. We knew with Mama Kitty around, the monkey la las would leave us alone.

Last but in NO WAY least, Celeste and Milos ... There's too much to say. In one nondescript sentence (but you should take our word for it), they are great! In a few more sentences ... They felt a lot more like family than anything else. Hanging out by the newly installed pool, buying us avocados, drinking dacquiris by our side, Celeste and Milos were not only accommodating, they were fun to be with too.

As for everything else, the cabins were clean and cozy, the property was gorgeous and the nearby beach was stunning; in response to the power going out, don't go to a developing Caribbean country if you can't take the heat. And anyway, they just got a new generator. Ask Celeste all about it.

  • Liked — Hammocks, breakfast, Haymish, pool scene, Celeste and Milos
  • Disliked — That I couldn't find anything to dislike. And the mosquitos, but that was everywhere.

My wife, 2 boys (6 and 3) and I stayed at the West Bay Lodge and had a wonderful time. We found the owners Milos and Celeste to be the nicest, most accomodating, friendliest people we have ever stayed with. We would highly recommend this resort.

Location:
The resort is just down a dirt road from the most beautiful beach on the island. The beach has beautiful white sand and crystal clear water. The snorkeling off this beach is outstanding with the reef starting just off the beach. There are several restaurants and bars close by as well as the water taxi to get to West End. There is also a store/deli accross the street if you need groceries or supplies. The lodge has recently added a nice pool which is perfect for cooling off. Overall a great location.

Rooms:
The bungalows are very nicely decorated and clean. The a/c worked well and the beds were comfortable. The rooms have everything you need as well as a stocked fridge full of beer and soft drinks and snacks which are reasonably priced. Each bungalow has a nice deck with a hammock outside - very nice.

Breakfast:
Celeste and Milos cook breakfast for the guests everyday. The breakfasts are delicious with different items served everyday. Provides a nice chance to get to know Celeste and Milos and the other guests as well as the parrots and toucan.

Overall Experience:
Given the fact that the rooms, location and food are great, the feature that makes this resort so special is the owners. Celeste, Milos and their son Jacob made sure everyone had everything they needed and would do anything they could to make your stay and your holiday special. It felt like we were staying with our best friends and they treated all the guests the same way. Our only regret is that we were not able to stay longer.

Next time we are in Roatan, we will definately stay here again. Thanks for the great holiday Celeste, Milos and Jacob.

I planned a 10 day trip to Roatan with the help of Trip Advisor. The reviews/comments posted gave such praise to this property & its owners. The reviews convinced me to make my reservations here. The descriptions & amenities of their bungalows were accurate. Everything was there. They always made sure we had everything we needed from towels to having our laundry done. Celste & Milos made our stay at their place very comfortable. It felt like home with them. We truly loved it there, their hospitality was endless, their generousity was true & Jacob, their son...a true character & lucky kid. Oh yeah, not only are the sunsets here absolutely incredible, the beach is beautiful, the sand is soft & the water is amazing. The only bad thing was the sand fleas, UGH!! Bring 100% deet or something comparable as if you run out, they only have OFF, which does nothing & you will be eaten alive!! Don't miss the Tequila Downs Crab Race when you visit, a FUN fundraising event for a great cause! We ARE coming back to Roatan, but more importantly back to West Bay Lodge. They were the Best! :)

I guess the fact that I write this review more than 4 months after my wife & I spent a week in West Bay Lodge shows that Celeste and Milos deserve our praise. We stayed in one of the larger bungalows - It was spacious and well equipped, including the kitchenette for preparing our own meals. The large verandah was great, especially since we caught the tail end of the rainy season. The only negative experience was due to the noise created by the construction work in the adjacent property. When the work was stopped due to the rain, the Lodge was truly peaceful, though. The owners are warm people, who honestly care about their guests: On a general level, the place is well run and impeccably clean, with a friendly and smiling staff. On a personal level, Celeste and Milos offered their help, concern and local knowledge as if we were their long lost friends. The breakfast on the "palapa" provided a great start for every day, with a daily changing menu, the chance to meet the other guests, and the company of a hilarious bunch of parrots (Ola!). The Lodge is within a brief walk from one of the best snorkeling beaches on Roatan, giving us a great chance to indulge in what brought us to the island in the first place. Taxis were available for a ride to the local townships & back, and we rented a car for just one day to do a longer sightseeing trip - after which we concluded that we had chosen the rigth place to stay.

Overall our stay at West Bay Lodge was good, but there were a few things that were disappointing. We ended up staying in one of the older cabins, which didn't have glass on the windows and a really old air conditioning unit. Both of these things proved to be very loud. It was so hot that we couldn't sleep without the air conditioning on, but the unit was so loud that we didn't sleep well with it on. If we did have it turned off for any amount of time, the noise from the road was quite loud. This was even more disappointing considering we had asked specifically for a quiet cabin. One morning the power went out at approximately 5 a.m. and they did not turn on the generator. By 7 a.m. it was far too hot to be inside of our unit. When we asked why the generator hadn't been turned on the owner said that she didn't want to wake us up with the noise of the generator. Considering the heat woke us up instead, this was quite funny. The other noteable negative comment is based on the fact that I'm an avid animal lover and have seen parrots and tucans in the wild numerous times in the past (ironically not far from Roatan). Seeing them as pets whilst eating breakfast (5 birds in all) was a bit upsetting. I discussed this with other customers and no one found the birds enhanced their stay at West Bay Lodge. Having said that, the facilities were clean, the owners very friendly and accomodating, the breakfasts quite good.

Our stay at West Bay Lodge was very nice. I could say all the positive things the previous reviews said but I'll try to mention some different things! The breakfasts were large and the hosts offered to give you more if needed. The fresh fruit and coffee and fresh juice were nice touches. The drinks and snacks (sold at cost) in the rooms were a nice touch, as was the unlimited bottled water. The walk to the beach isn't far and I don't know that it would be worth it to stay on the beach. The other hotels look comparable to West Bay Lodge and aren't reviewed nearly as well on this website. Celeste and Milos were so friendly and even invited all the guests to come to the hermit crab races to benefit the local school system. This takes place weekly on Thursday nights. They even provided us transportation from the lodge by bus. We thought that was a very nice touch. The rooms were more modern than I expected though we must have had one of the newer buildings. I would, however, not say that the linens were luxury as the website suggested. They were basic, nothing wrong with them. We really had a great stay and would stay there again! Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions.
