“Relaxing day on the beach”
Reviewed February 13, 2014

Our cruise ship stopped in Roatan and we quickly took a taxi ride to West Bay. Our driver suggested we spend the day at the Mayan Princess and what great advice! They readily accepted day visitors for a minimum charge which included chairs, tables, huge palm trees for shade, large beautiful swimming pool, showers, clean restrooms and excellent customer service. The Mayan beach security were very friendly and guarded our belongings as we snorkeled on the amazing reef nearby. We didn't see the resort rooms, but were told they were very nice. Definitely a place in which to return and stay for awhile.

Room Tip: Request a room facing the beach.

We just returned from a one week stay at the Mayan Princess. At the beach we experienced a calm warm ocean paired with golden hot sunny weather perfect for snorkelling/scuba diving.
The hotel is beautifully landscaped and it's location is in the middle of the beach on West Bay.The pool was nice but we are beach people so did not spend time there. They just recently purchased the property next door called Las Sirenas and are doing renovations to rooms as needed. Our room was in the Mayan Princess side with a bedroom, kitchen, living room and good balcony on the second floor(room 226) We were steps from the beach, pool, restaurant. You can't drink the tap water but bottled and purified water is available at any time. The food provided at the buffet at at three Ala carte restaurants was good and we were never hungry. The staff in general were friendly and helpful but work long hours and so service can sometimes be slow since the existing staff can only move so fast. A special extra big thank you to Glenda, Lonnie, Arnold, the girls at the bar, the wonderful gentleman who served the best made to order omelet to us each morning. Are only concerns are as follows: name tags for staff to help us identify staff who really work hard to make our stay with them the best it can be, self serve coffee especially in the morning when I don't want to wait to get my coffee. Claudio, our SunWing rep. did try to smooth over some concerns about what was included for the premium package guests. What was written on line and in the brochure did not match up especially concerning premium international alcohol. SunWing owners needs to communicate clearly to their clients what the hotel actually does include and offer so guests are not confused and disappointed. If you are somebody that is sensitive to mosquito bites just remember to pack bug spray since the island is lush and tropical and so of course, not bug free.
Over all it was a blast, we loved it and did not want to come home yet. Next time two weeks for sure!!!

I find previous reviews of this property hard to understand. We stayed at the Mayan Princess January 27 to February 3rd. Everyone we spoke with was disappointed with the food. We took our 2 "a la carte" meals at the hotel, but we went off property, paying for all other evening meals because the buffet was so poor. But first a few other comments.

Sunwing misrepresents this property. Our booking summary clearly states we booked at the "Mayan Princess Beach Resort Deluxe Poolside Mayan Section All inclusive". Our room was in the recently acquired La Sirenas building next door. As the helpful (NOT!) Sunwing rep Claudio asked "tell me, can you not see the pool from your room?". The room was clean & well cleaned daily by lovely house keeping staff, it had a tiny bed, insufficient towels & only one bedside table & one lamp. Claudio's preoccupation is to sell tours, not to assist anyone. It took 3 days to get a 2nd lamp, but alas not table. We needed to upend a drawer on a chair to hold the lamp. The air- conditioning failed at this same time & was not responded to. After increasingly strident requests on my part, we were finally moved to a much larger unit our final night. There was a phone in the room, but it wasn't connected to the front desk "yet".

Pool & beach washrooms were frequently out of soap, toilet paper, paper towels or 2 out 3 at the sme time.

And the food: the omelet station was tasty. Period. The first 3 buffets: lunch, dinner, lunch, chicken wings were one of the few principal proteins. Deep-frying was a preoccupation. Deep-fried calamari, over & over again anyone? Rice & beans were a highlight. One okay, no-name fish per buffet. For a tropical country, fruit selection was weak. House wine was sweetened bag-in-the-box "Chablis". It is illegal to call white wine Chablis, unless it derives from Burgundy; this was undrinkable. Happy to purchase wine under these dire circumstances, we discovered both Sauvignon Blancs we ordered to be out of stock. Fortunately, the beer that evening for our beach bar a a carte meal, was cold. This was not always the case at lunch time.

The above said, the beach was lovely with good service & despite a stiff awkward towel policy (card system, one towel per guest, lose the card, pay $50), a delightful, hardworking attendant. Sand fleas ate me alive, but avoided my wife completely) The water & slope from the beach were great. No waves, flat water for great swimming. I chose Roatan & chose Anemona Divers 5 minutes down the beach. Fabulous people, great dive shop, beyond expectation diving. Fantastic reefs are 10 minutes fom shore.

The local beach restaurants offer great value. There are drink specials everywhere & we enjoyed crab platters for $19 & double lobster tails dinners for $13. They all have decent Chilean wines starting at $17/bottle. There are numerous smaller properties for divers to choose from. The fact that Sunwing charges $1500 pp for what we received is numbing. The seafood & other foods & beverages are available. Labour is very affordable. Sunwing & the Mayan Princess could offer much more for the price. They also should not misrepresent the rooms. Shame on Sunwing. First & last time to use you.

There was a wedding during our stay. Several guests claim to have gotten food poisoning from the wedding meal. My wife got an intestinal sickness on the Wednesday. Being honest, food-bourne illnesses are hard trace, but one thing is sure, the food quality & even basic creativity were sorely lacking. Staff training requires major upgrades as well. Employees were well-mening, but often had little clue.

Room Tip: Only the original Mayan Princess side, but my suggestion is stay elsewhere if you enjoy food even mo...

We stayed here the week of Jan 13-20th and had a great time. While we were here we were able to do and see a lot of things and enjoyed relaxing at the hotel and beach. We knew going in that it was a smaller resort and there wasn't a lot of activities put on by the hotel or kids club activities (which we tend not to use on holidays anyways) to participate in. We are a family a 4 with kids 8 & 10 and they had a blast. Between the lovely pools and hot tub, the beach, snorkeling (best at the very end of the beach a 10 minute walk away), Gumbalimba park and ziplining and swimming with the dolphins we were always busy.

The food was standard for resorts although in comparison to other resorts there didn't seem to be as much variety but there was also something to eat. Jorge was a great waiter at the buffet. Drinks were made to order and we didn't feel the need to upgrade to premium although as you arrive you are presented with a "sunwing" drink menu you can order from. More waiters around the beach or pool areas would be helpful as well a selection of snack in the afternoon would be better - snack time was between 3:30-5pm although sometimes if you ordered it to come to the pool a simple plate of fries could take 45 minutes to arrive.

Jen and Mario were awesome! Our first day there we went on a nature walk with a group Jen took out. It was an interesting adventure we all enjoyed.

We had a 2 bedroom unit on the Mayan Princess side which was great. Not that we really used to the kitchen other than the fridge as we were all inclusive but I did peek around and noticed that it wasn't overly well equipped. If you were using it you would have some issues (1 knife and 1 spoon). There was no hot water, phone line didn't work and the toilet ran non stop. All of these issues were corrected quickly with exception to the phone which took 2 days to fix. The guy who fixed the stuff during the day seemed to ignore the phone and water issue however the evening repair guy got it fixed. The room was well kept, clean and nicely updated.

The pool and beach area was always clean and well kept. We saw someone everyday cleaning the pool and the beach was raked daily as well. The odd occasion usually later in the day sometime towels would be out so we weren't able to exchange wet towels. On the beach the guys working at the towel booth will also put up umbrellas for you as well if you request. There are people on the beach who walk by trying to sell you their goods/braiding/massages but they were relatively respectful once you said no.

All in all we had a great time. There were a few rainy days but it was still warm and we were still able to do the things we wanted to do.

As for the bed bugs - I was very cautious of this and checked the beds constantly. 3 out of 4 us ended up getting bites but we felt that it was the mosquitos, little tiny ants and sand flies as there was no evidence of bed bugs.

We spent five nights here for our honeymoon and had a great time. We stayed in a beachfront villa and LOVED it! They are one bedroom units with a huge living area and full kitchen. A king size bed in the bedroom and large two sink bathroom. A lot of space and walk out your front door and see the ocean... Ahhhh. There is also a patio you can enjoy and sit at. Our room was kept clean daily and service was great.
Food was great. Four restaurants but only one (the buffet) was open and served breakfast and lunch. Would have liked a sit down service lunch restaurant or maybe able to order breakfast to be served in the room, but the food variety changed daily and it was still great.
We got the premium all inclusive but there were still a few bottles of top shelf liquor that weren't included. Overall the drinks were great and the bartenders were fantastic. We would have liked to have had our fridge stocked with beer/wine but that wasn't part of the deal. Would have also liked to have been able to order sparkling wine (mimosas) but the bar didn't stock it either. Other than that, you could have anything!
We also went diving with Mayan Divers on the resort property and loved it!
There were always plenty of chairs on the beach and by the pool. Kayak was free but they only had one oar the whole time so it was limited.
I didn't partake in the spa since there were ladies walking along the beach offering massages for $20 for 45 minutes. I would definitely recommend t

I stayed at Mayan Princess about a year ago, everything went great on that trip, this year I found a special going on at Las Sirenas which is operated by Mayan Princess, I called Mayan Princess (since I couldnt find a # or website for Las Sirenas) and the staff at reservations where not helpful at all, they told me they didnt have any rooms for the dates I gave them, I personally expect people go the extra mile for customers and this wasnt the case, they didnt offer me other rooms, other dates, or even to stay at Mayan instead of Las Sirenas, very dissapointed as I highly recommended the hotel to my friends, now Im looking for another hotel that since Mayan seems they have enough customers to let 2 go...

I stayed at Mayan Princess for 1 week for a wedding of my friend. We were a group of 40. Probably the best experience I've had at a resort. The service was great from the reception workers to the cleaners. I especially want to thank Paola and Arnold. They both work the bar and serving food. They made everything possible to make me feel like I was at home. I met almost everyone who worked there and cant say nothing bad about any of them. Such hard workers to keep the people happy. Came back home telling people they have to make the trip down. Cant wait to see the Mayan Princess grown even more and be the place to go in the future. All respects to the owner and the well job he has done.
