Mayan Princess Beach & Dive Resort

My boyfriend and I went to Roatan for 2 weeks recently. We stayed at Mayan Princess. It is definitely one of the better resort at the west end beach.

Here is a list of pros for Mayan Princess.

1. The room is amazing. We stayed at a one bed room suite on the second floor. The suite is new and clean with a big balcony.

2. The pool with water fall is surrounded by a beautiful garden and is well maintained.

3. The food in the gourmet restaurant is delicious. It is included in our all inclusive package that we can go once per week.

4. Siggy (who is one of the manager in the resort) is very friendly and taking good care of everyone that stays in the hotel. His attention to the details of each customer is impressive.

5. They have live music few nights a week which is not imposing and enjoyable.

Here's a list of "room for improvement":

1. The list of drink included in the "all inclusive package" is very limited. For example, they do not include any coffee liqueur.

2. The service at the front desk "is not too friendly".

3. The beach has a reserved section for the cruise ship customer. However, the pool is wide opened for them. If you do not reserve a chair early enough, you will not get a chair as the pool will be crowed by the customer from the cruise ship.

All in all, it is a very nice resort on the island.

The resort is fine for serious beach travellers.Food is exceptable but not a major reason to come here. The weather has not cooperated for us I haven't even been able to go in snorkling yet.Though there is a coral reef just off shore calling my name.
Rooms are large and clean, good beds.I just don't recomend comming here in Dec.Other time of the year no problem. We have rented a car so will try and keep busy inspite of the rain.

Room Tip: Poolside room upper level very nice and wifi available

The location is great. Hotel offers a free transfer to/from the airport. The resort buildings are well maintained and the pool area has sunloungers. The rooms themselves are abit dated and tired, but kept very clean and sheets changed everyday. We had to call out maintenance a couple of times and they arrived within minutes - the staff were always very willing to help and very friendly. We didn't opt for AI and glad as the food was not the best - it was better just to wonder along the beach and stop at a cafe for lunch or dinner. Don't expect culinary delights as you'll struggle to find anything fabulous. Our favourite was Vintage Pearl - not cheap, but the food was definitely the best around.

We have recently returned from a trip to Roatan Island, Honduras where we stayed at the Mayan Princess.
We booked this holiday two weeks before leaving through TripCentral, using the charter company Sunwing Vacations. The flight was uneventful although we had to check our luggage even though it fit the required size for carry-on. There was no charge for this.
We felt the Mayan Princess more than met our expectations. The property was beautiful. All rooms looked out onto the pool area, which is long and narrow, meandering down to the beach, restaurant, & bar area. The pool has many waterfalls and bridges across
it, with exceptionally comfortable teak lounges along the sides. There was never a problem getting a lounge at the beach. Mark, the towel/beach guy, was there to help by setting up umbrellas, moving lounges, and just being friendly.
Grace, the special events co-ordinator, and Sofya, the spa director, were very helpful in advising us what was going on around the beach. We even made it to a Leaf telecast in West End Village, courtesy of the bar Sundowners. Thanks for the tip Grace!!
We really enjoyed the layout of the hotel rooms. They are organized as fourplexes. Each one is a one bedroom apartment with very large balconies. These units are privately owned but turned into the hotel company when the owners are not present. All have wicker furniture in the living room, with a pullout couch. The lower level ones are slightly bigger with a dining area but the upstairs ones have private balconies. The beds were very comfortable and the bathrooms clean.
We are not divers but thoroughly enjoyed the snorkelling. We brought our own equipment but you can easily rent it there (about $5 for half a day). The reef is relatively close to shore and even a non-swimmer can enjoy the sights by the far end of the beach. The water itself is that great bluey-green turquoise colour of the Caribbean Sea. Again, the dive shop people were very helpful.
Food was very good. We had 2 a la cartes, one indoors and one outdoors. Both included surf and turf. Juan is doing a great job overseeing the service and food. We felt that the buffet was quite good, considering that it is only serving maybe 75 people at a time. There was always an omlette station in the morning, along with the usual fresh fruit, cereal, toast, oatmeal, pancakes, and sausage/bacon. The french toast was yummy! Siggy is the man in the buffet restaurant and really works hard to make all meals enjoyable and tasty! It amazed the four of us how they managed to keep the cooked vegetables still crisp at dinner
time. Bartenders & waiters (especially Oscar & Malik) were very friendly and quick to serve.
Entertainment at night was good; this is a very laid back hotel with only 50
rooms. Jen, the social activities director, does a great job providing entertainment. You won't get the big "Vegas" type shows but there was a fire dance one night on the beach and the beach club next door had a big party another night. There were also local dancers who came in to perform. The little children were really sweet. There was some kind of live entertainment on every night. Be sure to take advantage of Jen's suggestions. Her walks around the town were very interesting. Also, make sure to take a water taxi to West End Village. It was indeed very interesting.
The weather was fantastic! My only suggestion would be to bring bug spray, as there are
mosquitos and sand fleas.
On our return, we heard some very negative things about the Melia Luna. Apparently
during the week, there were times when they ran out of alcohol and beer, along with eggs. We found this surprising as it is ranked as a 4 1/2*.
I found it interesting that some reviewers have been critical of the daily cruise visitors. We found it interesting to talk to people from the various ships. The cruise ships only come in on Tues., Wed., Thurs., and Friday. Everyone mentioned how lucky we were to stay at this hotel. The hotel maintains a certain section of the beach for hotel guests only so, for us, there never was a problem with overcrowding.
All-in-all a great holiday!

Room Tip: Take an upstairs one! We had 209, our friends had 210. Balconies are very private.

I recently stayed at this hotel for a week; the hotel is very nice, except for the fact that the second bedroom of our two bedroom condo did not have any air conditioning vents; this room I am sure is not a bedroom since it does not have any closets or even a mirrow to utilize when one is trying to get ready. It is surrounded by windows that allow all the morning light to come in and you will be up by 6 am whether you want to or not.

The only reason this was tolerated was because the weather was not very hot at night in November; I would not recommend staying with no AC during the hotter months.

Do not believe them when they tell you that you are going to be picked up from the airport; you will NOT, when we told the staff that we had to pay a taxi because there was no pick up service all they did was discuss it amongst thenselves; they did not offer to give us a discount or comp us in any way; I guess they are so used to this happening that they do not even try to rectify it.

The staff at the restaurant is a tad racist I am sad to say; if you are Caucasian, you will be treated so much better than if you are Hispanic. After the staff saw that we were tipping with every meal, they stared being nicer to us, but the first two days, we were basically ignored since there were white customers to attend to and we are not white.

The location of the hotel is great, west bay has the best beach in Roatan. The food was also pretty good, we paid for the all inclusive package.

Overall, unless they can assure you that all rooms in condo have AC, I would not stay here, there are other very nice hotels on west bay.

We had a tough decision prior to booking with Sunwing about which property to book into but are we ever thrilled we chose the Princess. It is a smaller property with 54 rooms, which are actually condos with kitchen, bathroom, bedroom dining and living areas. We chose to upgrade to the oceanfront version but almost any of the locations along the pool would have been just as nice. We can't speak for the tower rooms although friends we met say the rooms were very good as well. Ours was spacious, clean and everything functioned as it should. We could step out our door, down the steps and onto the beach.

The hotel staff we can't say enough about. The service from room cleaning to restaurants to the bar, activities and front desk were just so good we can't say enough. You are likely thinking we are easy to please and there is an element to that but we hardly heard a bad word from any of the guests during our stay. The food, for buffet style, was very good, consistent and plentiful for those who like to eat good portions. Our stay allowed us one use of the Luna Maya restaurant (gourmet) and one of the Caliente restaurant (casual). In both cases the menu selection was stellar (seafood, lobster, steaks, etc.) and the food was as good as you would want. Of special note, the food and beverage manager, Juan Francisco, was unbelievable. He worked immense number of hours every day to make everything perfect for his guests. If it wasn't right, he would make it that way! His staff in the restaurants and bar were prompt, courteous and just a lot of fun. There are so many to thank but notables in this area are Oscar and Ivan at the bar and Siggy in the restaurant/bar. On the beach, Mark and the rest of the crew were excellent in making sure you had towels, clean chairs and keeping the "cruise people" in the areas that they were supposed to be in. Compared to other properties we have stayed at previously, we can only commend the Princess staff for there efforts with this.

The front desk staff, dive centre staff and activities staff were awesome as well. In particular, Jan, the activities person was just a hoot. She was always smiling, always took the time to speak with guests and while urging you to participate in activities she did not bug you to do so. She was just a gem!

The beach was beautiful, not much else can be said. The water was generally calm, you could snorkel from the beach if you wanted or walk a couple hundred steps to the better part of the reef at the park area and see all the fish you wanted. The only drawback to the beach was when the cruise lines came in and then the beach would be hugely populated for a few hours, then quiet again. There were always lots of local "sales people" wanting to sell you trinkets, cigars, t-shirts and just about anything else to try and make a buck but overall they did not hound you and were quite pleasant if you took the time to even just speak with them. The only real downer of the beach and sand were the sand flies that came out late in the afternoon and early morning. Although the hotel sprayed regularly around the property the sand fly issue was island wide and all you could really do was spray for them. We discovered through one of the beach vendors that Coconut Oil worked very good. We purchased a small bottle from the vendor (anything was worth a try) and low and behold, we had excellent results. It goes where we go now.

The day we left to come home a tropical storm moved into the island and caused a lot of delays. Our Sunwing representative, Patrick, was all over the situation and worked diligently to keep us informed and updated. While we had to leave the hotel and spent many hours at the airport all turned out very well for us. Sunwing gave us lunch, were prepared to put us up overnight if need at no expense to us. What more could you ask given the circumstance!

In summary, we would recommend this property to anybody wanting a laid back vacation with great service, food, accommodations and location.

Room Tip: The beachfront rooms are "location perfect" the garden view rooms at poolside would be equ...

We came to Roatan as part of our cruise and were brought by one of the taxi drivers to what in his opinion was the best resort to spend the day. He couldn't have been more right. The hotel was stunning and the beach was amazing. The staff was very friendly and very inviting. Next time I'm planning my whole week there!
