“Penelope's Island Emporium”
Review of West Bay Beach

Owner description: West Bay is what many consider the picture-perfect Caribbean destination: white sand, clear, calm waters and full service resorts. The variety of water activities include scuba diving, fishing charters, snorkeling and parasailing. Scuba diving and other outfitters leave directly from the beach so starting your water-based activities is easy and convenient.

I have visited Penelope's Island Emporium twice and enjoyed both experiences. There are so many different things to look at! Jewelry, tree ornaments, island salt, you name it. Penelope is very well versed on her products and tells you where they came from and the history regarding the piece. It is obvious Penelope works hard to provide good customer service.

I bought a pair of earrings made by local girls. I overheard Penelope talking about stone that was mined from somewhere and the proceeds of the sale of that item go back to the mine workers. I also bought a beautiful blue necklace made of Lapiz Lazoli and a silver bracelet. I rarely spend money on myself and that day I sure enjoyed myself. I live on the island so look forward to my next visit.

The beach is beautiful but beware of the peddlers. One lady started pouring baby oil on my back and tried to give me a massage and I pretty much had to get ugly with her to get her to stop. I ended up getting a pretty nasty sunburn because of the oil and it was a little aggravating trying to enjoy the peace when all of these people are bugging you. Snorkeling is wonderful here!

This is a beautiful beach and bay with fantastic coral gardens and some of the best off the beach snorkeling I've ever seen. However, it is clearly in decline due to careless development, increasing noise, boat traffic, garbage, litter, etc. Noisy, cheesy resorts with idiotic activities like banana boats speeding over the coral are proliferating around the older, quieter accommodations.

This is supposedly in a protected marine park, but the clear trajectory is development at any cost... if it continues for much longer all the things that make people want to come here will be gone.

West Bay Beach is a really safe beach with awesome water, great snorkeling and many places to eat or get a drink.

I recently spent a week in a rental house on West Bay Beach. The coral reefs off West Bay Beach are beautiful and have a wide variety of sea life. The sand on the beach is soft and white and the height restrictions of the resorts make the beach feel relaxed and the skyline look natural.

However, there are some significant negatives to this beach area that need to be pointed out. Hopefully they will be addressed soon, as they truly hampered my enjoyment of the place and make me think twice about coming back to stay in the West Bay area or Roatan in general:

- I spent a week snorkeling off West Bay Beach and every single day, I picked up disposable coke cups, pieces of plastic, granola / candy bar wrappers, and other garbage. I picked this trash up while snorkeling around the reef and while walking on the beach.
-There are plastic bags everywhere on Roatan: in every store, supermarket, fruit / vegetable venders, souvenir shops. Unfortunately, everyone is giving out plastic bags. The awareness among residents that Roatan is a highly sensitive ecological zone and marine park doesn't seem present from what I observed.
-There is a particular resort on the beach that always has huge speakers pumping out music or showing movies on the beach. This really disturbs the peaceful 'paradise' island vibe that most people want when they sit on a white powder beach. This resort has no respect for all the other resorts or all the other people who don't want to listen to Shrek II at full blast from 200 feet away.
