“Found on a whim - left with a slice of Maderia to return too! ”
Reviewed November 10, 2016 for a stay in November 2016

Finding the right accommodation can make or break a trip - we knew from the the moment Heather greeted Sue & I, after a long day travelling - that Rosemary Cottage was perfect for our needs.

The welcome pack got us off to a flyer and with a plethora of local tips - we can honestly say we wasted little time getting acclimatised.

In short - this property is an ideal bolt hole on an island that truly lived up to it's friendly and relaxed reputation. Just make sure you don't book it for when we want to return!

“This cottage offers everything that you need and more”
Reviewed October 16, 2015 for a stay in September 2015

For self-catering accommodation, it would be difficult to find anything superior at anything like this price. The cottage has a superb location on a terrace overlooking the coast in a quieter part of Madeira. There is a lovely pool on a lower terrace that is shared with just one other cottage. We drove ourselves from Funchal Airport having rented a car from Funchal Car Hire which was recommended to us by Heather who runs the site. She gave us very detailed instructions and we found Banda do Sol with little difficulty. The main road from the airport is an easy drive thanks to the many tunnels that have been constructed in recent years. Allow an hour for the journey.
Nothing is too much trouble for Heather and her parents who also live on-site. We were warmly greeted and shown round the bungalow with everything explained fully. A welcome bag of goodies means that you'll be able to make a cup of tea or coffee, make a snack meal and enjoy a bottle of wine without having to immediately shop.
The kitchen area of the open-plan design is extraordinarily well equipped; there are items here that we don't have at home! The bedroom is spacious with adequate wardrobe and drawer space and a soft, comfortable double bed. The outside shutters can be closed during the daytime to keep the room cool in conjunction with an effective ceiling fan.
The bathroom has a shower-over-bath with copious hot water, together with toilet and large washbasin with storage below and shelf above. Separate sets of towels are provided for bathroom, pool and beach use!
The whole place is thoroughly cleaned each week together with a change of all towels and bedlinen.
The lounge area has a comfortable sofa plus 2 other cane chairs and a low, upholstered foot rest; ideal for stretching out. There is also a dining table and 2 chairs. Entertainment is provided by a Sony flat-screen television with satellite reception, linked to a home theatre system with 5 speakers and bass unit for playing DVD's or CD's. Free wi-fi is exclusive to the cottage and of good speed. For cooler times there is a log burner and fuel.
Two large sliding doors give a great view out to sea and slide apart to give access to a terrace which has been further enclosed by more large sliding panels. This area has its own table and 2 chairs. Beyond is a decked area fronted by a railing overlooking the pool. There is a good fixed barbecue to one side of the decking as well as a small portable unit as well!
The pool isn't heated but was pleasantly warm throughout our stay and regularly cleaned by Heather herself.
But in many ways, perhaps the most overriding memory of our stay is the friendliness and warmth of Heather and her parents; we felt like we'd come home. She never intrudes but is there if required and we enjoyed several interesting and enjoyable chats with her.
We had an early 7.30 a.m. departure but the family were all there to see us off and wish us well. It doesn't get any better than this.
We booked for next year by the end of our first week!

“I did not believe the perfect location existed until I found Banda do Sol.”
Reviewed July 16, 2014 for a stay in June 2014

Spending 2 weeks in Rosemary Cottage in June was just a joy! After some lazy hazy days, our host, Heather, suggested several options to explore the lovely area around Banda do Sol. We took her advice and went on SAFARI by Jeep! Super way to see the more remote parts of Madeira, and home in time for drinks by the pool to admire another beautiful sunset. Perfect! There is so much to admire on this fantastic island, from Cosmopolitan Funchal just 30 minutes away, to Porto Moniz further North with it's rugged coastline reached easily by the tunnels which have opened up this paradise to all. The farmer's markets are eye-opening! I have never bought avocados by the kilo before! Cheap as Chips! And if you do nothing else, try Poncha! CHEERS!
We can't wait to return to wonderful, welcoming, flower filled Madeira, with it's fantastic climate. No wonder so many visitors return to live there! Rosemary Cottage is perfect in every way, it has all the comforts of home, and the new garden room is a joy to dine in, looking over the garden to the Atlantic beyond and planning another perfect day.

“Absolutely first class ~ pefect base from which to explore the island ~ caring, helpful and attentive owners”
Reviewed May 19, 2013 for a stay in May 2013

Probably a more tranquil part of this bonnie island but nonetheless only half an hours drive to Funchal. Spotless, immaculately presented & comfy cottage. Friendly, attentive and most helpful owners on hand if required. Great access to levada walks and to nearby towns of Jardim do Mar (5mins), Calheta, Paul do Mar, Ponta do Sol and Ribeira Brava. The delightful town of Sao Vicente on the (less sheltered) north coast is only 45 mins drive. All in all a fantastic experience staying in Madeira ... but the base/living quarters have to be right to ensure everything else can follow; and it was!

“Special House in Garden with Magnificent Sea Views.”
Reviewed January 10, 2013 for a stay in January 2013

We stayed for three weeks over Christmas and New Year 2012 into January 2013. Generous, friendly host full of information and local insight. Friendly and inclusive...we were included in festive gatherings including the spectacular fireworks display of New Year. Great location for exploring western Madeira, away from the bustle of Funchal and easy access to lots of walks and the rural villages. House very comfortable indeed, everything supplied...great home from home.
