“Excellent quiet place”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 20, 2013

We initially planed to stay in Okarito beach house for one night and ended up staying two (I wish we had stayed longer). It's perfect location if you are heading to glaciers but looking for quiet place to stay. We stayed at the Summit lodge - awesome house with very well equipped kitchen and an amazing dining table. There is no shop in Okarito, so we brought your food.
Laura suggested kayaks in Okarito lagoon and it was a very nice experience (especially if you like birds). It felt really homie. There was a hammock at the entrance to the lodge - nice touch and very comfy for gazing at the stars at night.
I would definitely advise this place to those looking for a quiet place close to nature.

This place is a must stop, if you want to experience the real west coast , away from the helicopters, and shops. Instead for entertainment and exercise, take a walk along the beach. chances are you will be the only person for miles.

That said you need to take your own food, but this place is set up for you to prepare your own.

Laura was on to it, making sure we were sorted from the minute we arrived. Everything was clean and tidy

Okarito beach house is exactly what you would expect if you made the secluded trek into Okarito, population 31. It's quiet, private and scenic. All amenities were as advertised. We had a room with double bed, private bathroom and shower in a house with 2 other rooms. Everything was nice and tidy. The bed was super cosy!

We stayed for our second time in the "Hutel' bach. Its a great cosy little place for two but our accommodating hosts made it work well with two children as well. There is a small deck and access to a shared laundry. The ocean is just a two minute walk away and the beach is one of the most beautifully wild on this coast. There are some excellent bush and shore walks that start from the village. Bring all your own supplies (the nearest small store is in Franz Joseph) and enjoy being off the main tourist circuit in a place where it is easier than most to switch off the rest of the world.

Room Tip: The rest of the Beach house is a backpackers. We can't comment on the accommodation but it shar...

Beach House located in a lovely small town with wonderful beach, great walks-Okarito Trig Walk,Three Mile Pack Track and Okarito Coastal Track(highly comment),beautiful lagoon and friendly people. I stayed here for one night in a room with large french windows. So I can see the sunset view and relax just in my room. If I can I will love to stay longer.

Room Tip: Room with beautiful sunset.

Agree with other reviewer. The "beachhouse" has a variety of accomodatoins. We drove over from Christcchurch yesterday; Arrived at modest but very comfortable, beautiful location by the lagoon and ocean. Great walk nearby up to Trig with incredible views of ocean and Southern Alps. Proprietors were friendly, attentive and very helpful. Locatoin is proximate to the glacier which we hiked today. Breakfast provided at low cost. Wifi available as are laundry facilities. Kayaking and nghttime kiwi bird watching activities right on the block. We stayed at the Hutel self contained cabin. Highly recommend.

Room Tip: The Hutel is self contained cabinj ideal for 2.

This place has "hostel" in its full name, but that might be misleading. Several accomodation options depending upon what you want/need. The 4 of us had booked 2 en suite rooms in the "lodge" which has a total of 3 en suite rooms and an extra toilet/sink room, plus a huge common area with wood stove, couches, huge dining table, and full kitchen. Apparantly, there is also a small hut, whose guests would also use the common area. No one else was booked there, so we had the whole place to ourselves. Very comfortable, quiet, and very reasonable rates. The WiFi worked well. The little town is quaint and quiet. As others have mentioned, there are no shops or restaurants in Okarito, so bring everything you need.

We had a lovely walk along the beach in the afternoon, then went on a guided Kiwi sighting tour in the evening. The owners were friendly and helpful. We had a wonderful stay.

Room Tip: All of the rooms are modern, nice, and quiet.
