“Boeuf tartare”
Review of Cafe Tivoli

Cafe Tivoli
Certificate of Excellence
Price range: $18 - $31

Restaurant details
Good for: Local cuisine
Dining options: Late Night, Reservations
Description: Restaurant-brasserie in the heart of Chatel-St-Denis, close to the public transport. The house also owns 4 bedrooms. The cheese fondue has been a family tradition for a century. In addition to its delicious fondue, the restaurant is famous for its inside, adorned with figures carved in wood. Each table is unique, carved or inlaid. And rather ironic, if the opposite of Tivoli is "i lov it" you will come again very soon.

We go to the Tivoli for boeuf tartare, which is excellent and reasonably priced. Of course the cheese is good ( as all the previous reviews have stated). You can buy the same fondue cheese mix at the fromagerie across the street. The secret is the vacherin fribourgois, less salty and oh so creamy.

New experience ever. This is my first time traveling to Switzerland. My friend took me to Tivoli right away, she said Tivoli serves the best Cheese fondue in town, and she was right!! Cheese was mild and good taste. Best way you should have tea while you're having cheese fondue, good for a digestion. Meringue with white cream is the best!! It's the best cream I've ever had, so yummy!! Another yummy dish was a dried meat.My friend speak French, so she ordered everything for me. Sorry if I didn't know the particular name in their language but you can look at my photo :) Some waitress wear traditional Switzerland dress too, they looked lovely. There are 2 floors in this restaurant, nice atmosphere. If you come to Châtel-St-Denis, don't miss!! strongly recommended.

The fondue, in an exceptional atmosphere of all wood, carved tables, cow bells and other paraphernalia, is very good...but I have had better. (Across the market, for example and up the hill in Les Paccots).
It is more or less full for lunch every day and so it was when we visited. We had the "moitié-moitié" (CHF24) and a demi-portion de Viande Sechèe to start (CHF 13). The dried meat portion was excellent. We had a bottle of the white 'Vin de mois' at CHF 28.
As I am a great admirer of various Eau de Vie's, I asked if they had 'something different'. From their long list, the waiter recommended a "Grand Gruyère Vert ou Blanche". I decided that this was worth a try, so ordered the "Blanche" (listed as CHF 7.80 for 2 cl). It was not a white alcohol, as the Eau de Vies normally are, but sweet, like a liqueur, and of a very golden colour; not unpleasant and a very interesting flavour experience, but far too sweet for an Eau de Vie. (I was billed CHF 5.90 for this).
It is a place to take visitors from abroad for a fondue and a bit of Swiss ambiance.

After a visit to the dismal Ice Palace near Schwarzsee, my Swiss friends from Aigle treated me to a meal in this homely, charming bastion of comfort and service. No surprises. Just a whole heap of melted cheese into which pieces of crusty bread and mini whole potatoes could be dipped, accompanied by a not unusually great Swiss red wine. On a cold winter's evening, pounds of carb served up in a warm and friendly environment by Swiss waitresses whose professionalism would put many of their British counterparts to shame. Fabulous. The restaurant was full all evening. Pleased to see from Cafe Tivoli's website that their cuisine has made inroads into London. Please come to Bournemouth: you are sorely missed. I lov it.

Tivoli has had the reputation over decades to serve among the best, if not the best, cheese fondue to be found in a restaurant in Switzerland. As we talk of a restaurant close to the mecca of cheese, Gruyères, we may be talking of the best restaurant served fondue in the world. This reputation is alive and deserves to be. Cooked as it should be (whether the moitié - moitié, Gruyères and Vacherin fribourgeois, or the pure Vacherin), i.e as it is in cheese makers and fondue real amateurs homes. Then the décors, entirely made of wood carvings depicting daily local life of cow boys (armaillis) and cheese makers and embodying Swiss famous heroes and figures (Willem Tell, Henri Dunand, Nicholas of Flue, the Vatican guard and so many others) and with the usual cow bells... Châtel St Denis has no other reason to be visited than the restaurant (well, except the cheese shop opposite Tivoli) but it is worth the trip from Vevey, Montreux or even Lausanne or Geneva if you wish to experience what a real fondue is, and what, as a dessert, a real meringue with double cream is. Be ready for a caloric load, but a memorable one!
