“A Wonderful Place”
Reviewed August 6, 2011

We (my wife, youngest son and I) spent four nights in a HUGE beachfront cabin. We had a truly outstanding time walking the beach (Dixon Entrance), lounging in the private hot tub and just plain relaxing in a very isolated and beautiful place. A super comfortable lodging where we just wanted to "hang out". Nonetheless, there is lots of fascinating stuff nearby (notably Tow Hill) to explore. We would go out of our way to stay here again. Everyone we met who worked there was cheerful, welcoming and very helpful. A great experience.

We stayed all over Haida Gwaii. From Sandspit to Masset and by a landslide, Alaska View was the most beautiful. The cabins were perfect for us. We were 2 couples traveling together, touring the islands and doing a bit of fishing, hiking and much adventuring. We stayed at Alaska View for 2 nights and wished we had booked in longer. We loved cooking on the barbeque on the deck overlooking the incredible ocean views. We absolutely loved the friendly and helpful staff!!! Cynthia and Sarah made our stay incredibly wonderful!!!! I would and will recommend Alaska View Lodge to anyone. Thank you for making our trip so memorable. Erin Wallis. photos from our stay here... http://www.erinwallis.com/blog/2011/08/haida-gwaii/

Cindy was so pleasant and helpful. She made a delicious breakfast and really did everything to make us feel welcome. Ocean front property with incredible views, and you really can see Alaska on a clear day. Great stay.

We booked a 3-night stay at Alaska View Lodge, since it offered a convenient base for a cultural and historical tour of Haida Gwaii. Although experiencing the Haida’s homeland, art and life is not to be missed, we recommend avoiding the shabbiness of the Alaska View Lodge if you possibly can. The website, www.alaskaviewlodge.com, offers no views of the rooms on offer, which should have been a tip-off. After arriving there, we discovered that the one room depicted in their print brochure bore no resemblance to the reality.

The Lodge, while primarily for fishermen and –women, claims to function in part as a B&B, but we have never before experienced a B&B with the following attributes: no bed-making service; ragged towels that where once white but now are gray; no drinking glasses in the bathroom; no facial tissues; one 4-cup coffee pot for two rooms; a sofa with missing buttons on its upholstered back. In addition, our room had a sliding door that in principle provided access to the deck, but in fact was stuck shut. The only spare pillows in the room were without pillowcases and covered in short black hairs. Part of the baseboard near the shower stall was rotted away; the remainder was encrusted with dirt. The main colors used in decorating the room were green and brown, accented (?!) by a powder blue bath rug in the main room. There was of course no bathmat in the bathroom. A single mangy powder blue robe also hung in the closet.

On the positive side, the beachside setting of the lodge is beautiful. The breakfasts and the dinners, the latter available for an additional price, were also very tasty. If only one could somehow stay without any contact with the individual guest rooms.

Alaska View Lodge operates as a two-pronged business, both as a Fishing Lodge and a B&B. We went there on the B&B front and were not disappointed.

Situated a few minutes out of Masset on Tow Hill Road, the lodge itself is quite large and well appointed. Our accomodation was in a seperate two-suite building, and had a good sized veranda which also held a hot tub. Facing the water, it was a short 2 minute walk to the beach which is so large it's pretty much deserted.

The room was very comfortable, with cozy down duvets on the beds and a decent sized bathroom. We left our sliding glass door open all night so we could listen to the sound of the waves on the beach - a real treat.

The lodge is managed by a young Canadian woman (Diane), who also acts as room cleaner and do-it-all person. The cooking is handled by a young man from Australia (Scott) who really knows his stuff. Each morning we were there (3) we were presented with very fresh, very good breakfasts. Each day we would ask what he was cooking for the Fishing Lodge people that would be there that evening after their day, and he would rattle off a number of high-end dishes that they would be treated to that evening.

A great place to stay, highly recommended.
