“Worth Considering”
Reviewed July 8, 2009

We were visiting Whitby as "The Brass Players" were performing at Whitby Pavilion on the Sunday evening. We usually stay at hotels/B & B's on West Cliff but our usual accommodations were full. We booked 3 double rooms through booking.com and then other friends (performers) booked another couple of rooms independently. This place does what it says on the tin. It is a beautiful old house, steeped in history and with loads of character. I am sure the owners could exploit the house's historical connections to their advantage.

Rooms clean although edges of carpets could do a good fettle so nothing to write home about. Most rooms have been updated but our shower was very small. The male owner did not reckon that anyone bothered to read the reviews on Trip Advisor. I explained that had I not read the reviews he would have missed out on 5 rooms that night!

As stated by others, the breakfast is good and the location of the hotel is fabulous in Ruswarp village.

Stayed for two nights at a very reasonable rate. Staff were very friendly and helpful, always had time to answer any questions. Room was good with a great view over the rear garden and vista beyond. Breakfast was a full English to order and very tasty it was. Best was the location as it is about a mile from the center of Whitby there is a nice walk from the Hall which I would recommend. We caught the Esk valley railway train at Sleights (having again walked from the Hall along the valley} through to Great Ayton and then climbed Roseberry Topping. Had a swift half in Ayton then returned to Ruswarp. All in all a great couple of days and we would recommend a stay.

We stayed here for one night and found the stay very good, the rooms are clean and comfortable, and the Hall a wonderful building. It just looks that little bit special when you turn into the courtyard.
We had room 5 which is at the rear of the building looking out over the Esk valley, it has a wonderful mullion window and is just made for sitting there with a cuppa taking in the view. Our son had room 1 which was a little larger and at the front of the property, he said the room was good and no problems.
Breakfast was spot on, cooked fresh and presented well, plenty of tea/coffee and juices, along with the usual cereals and fruit.
The Hall has a bar and the prices are reasonable, we were the only ones in the bar but given the time of year its not unusual, the bar is not attended all the time, you have to ring a bell for attention, but the owners are quick to appear.
The hosts are a nice couple, very welcoming and nothing appears too much trouble, they took their time to chat and make sure everything was ok.
The Hall is just outside Whitby in a small village called Ruswarp, but it is easily within walking distance for most people, there is a paved trod that runs past the hall, the path follows the Esk valley and it is away from the traffic until you reach whitby, a pleasant walk even if you don't go all the way to whitby,it brings you out at the top of whitby and it took us about 20 minutes to get there, we walked back as well but were told it's about 5 quid by taxi back.
All in all a good place to stay and very welcoming.

We stayed for one night at Ruswarp hall, and were absolutely amazed at the value for money. For a measly £30 pp/pn, we stayed in a comfortable room with all necessary amenities, with the most wonderful view of the surrounding scenery. The staff were extremely pleasant and helpful throughout. The breakfast was equally wonderful- fruit, cereal, and a cooked breakfast containing whatever you like.

The location was fab- just 1mile wak from Whitby centre.

We intend to stay at Ruswarp again soon- fantastic place. Would definitely recommend.

  • Liked — The stunning views.
  • Disliked — Very minor- the walls could have done with a lick of paint.

We found it to be a good Bed and Breakfast place. The room was clean and the bed was comfortable. A very good breakfast
with lots to choose from. The owner was helpful when we left and wanted to walk into Whitby. He gave us explicit details about the way. Would go back again

It is not an hotel - it is a B & B. For a B & B it is very good.

Breakfast is easy - you get what you ask for. Otherwise you get a full english breakfast. We were asked when we arrived what we wanted each morning and got exactly what we ordered. If there was not enough on the plate - you were supplied with a tonge and extra was readily provided. (I hate people who sit through something and complain later.)

Breakfast is rather short 8.30 to 9.30 - though one morning we wanted to leave early and were able to get an earlier time.

The rooms are clean though a little drab. Having seen only one room it is difficult to make a general comment on them. Adequate was a good description. They were cleaned and supplied each day.

The website says that the carpark is limited. This is VERY true. Also the access has very poor visibility.

Even though the website says that there is a bar - there was not any sign of one.

The area is quiet and well located for touring the North Yorkshire Area. Though a 15 minute walk to downtown Whitby seems to beyond most people judging by the distance.

Overall, it is an aged building and in areas it shows it. I have seen a lot worse. Give it a try.

We stayed at the Ruswarp Hall Hotel as an Anniversary Break,
unfortunatley we presumed it would have a Restaurant, it only served breakfast. We had to go out for our meals. We found it to be very dissapointing. It classes itself to be a Hotel when in fact it is a Bed and Breakfast. We have Booked rooms with Late Rooms.com before without any problems. This one Let us down.
