Ruswarp is a mile from the edge of Whitby by foot (there are several walking routes including one across an old viaduct), bus or train, plus it has a very acceptable pub. Ruswarp Hall dates from around 1600 and as the traveller pictures show (the 'professional' one is somewhere else entirely!) is attractive and characterful. My single room was rather faded and dingy, with some peeling paint and a loose light fitting; it was also easy to hear what was going on in the next room or on the staircase. Having said that the room was comfortable enough and had a good shower (if in a tiny shower room).

Stayed here whilst working in the area. Nice rooms, very clean and tidy. Staff friendly and helpful. Good breakfast. Only downside was the total lack of mobile signal which I needed for work (minor complaint). Would recommend

Room Tip: Some rooms only have a bath so if you prefer a shower make owner aware when booking

My boyfriend and I booked for one night so we could spend a weekend in Whitby and was exactly what we expected given the cost and description. We travel a lot and stay in many B&Bs and so are very realistic about what to expect for our budgets. If u r more interested in spending time in Whitby and you want a clean bed for the night with a nice Breckie then this place will suit you, if you want something extra special then look a bit harder and pay a lot more. I'm disappointed that people have marked the place down saying they expected more as its a nice little B&B :)

The hall has a grand entrance and beautiful staircase. It is a little basic and perhaps could do with an update on decor/soft furnishings but it was spotlessly clean, comfortable and we had a very warm welcome from the hosts. Breakfast was very good. The website appeared to show a bar which we never found, there was a very nice lounge but this seemed underused. Very convenient for Whitby and Ruswarp itself is lovely. Good pub just down the road. Would certainly stay there again, very good value for money.

We'd made it! The C2C was over and my mate had, 8 months earlier, booked us a table at The Magpie in Whitby and so we needed accommodation somewhere nearby. This was literally the only place where we could get a room, and indeed, we had to take a room for 4 for the 2 of us to share.

We were blown away by the building as the taxi dropped us off, dusty, hot, tired, and thought we'd lucked a really phenomenal place to stay. Our hostess was delightful - she welcomed us warmly, was friendly and hospitable, and showed us to our room right at the top of the hotel.

The room was fine - a four poster bed and a couple of singles. It was clean, it was comfortable enough, and the ensuite, although tiny, served its purpose. We just felt there wasn't much in the way of a personal touch about the place. There was just no character once you got past the great façade. The shampoo comes in those terrible sachets you have to tear open with your teeth, there just wasn't the space to hang wet towels and clothes. I am sounding "picky", which is unfair, but for me there was nothing that sets the place apart and would make you want to go back and stay again.

Breakfast was fine in a big multi tabled dining room, but again there was nothing that stood out and created the "wow" factor. For us it was a bed, and a comfortable bed at that, and not all that long a cab ride to The Magpie.

So, a bed for the night run by nice people ( we had experienced worse elsewhere on the C2C, believe you me!), but pretty basic and uninspiring, our most expensive night of the whole trip (including a Hilton Hotel on Trafalgar Square!), and nothing to really say we'd return.

Have stayed at Ruswarp Hall twice and have enjoyed both visits.
It's quite basic but very welcoming and comfortable.
It does feel like a step back in time but I think it's ideal for an hotel just outside of Whitby.
The owners are very friendly and helpful and the breakfasts are superb.
It does look like it needs a lick of paint but in some ways this adds to the character for me.
Not too far away for a nice amble into Whitby either.
Would we stay here again? Yes, definately.

We deliberately chose Ruswarp Hall for our visit to Whitby because it was just outside (about a mile) the town and this was a good choice because Whitby itself was very busy. There is a paved walk into town, although not suitable for less abled walkers (slopes, steps and uneven surfaces) but for us it was fine.

Ruswarp Hall is a grand old building but not huge so you don't get the feeling of being lost, as you can in some imposing buildings. We had a family room on the top floor (essentially two bedrooms) and so had plenty of space. Some of it was unuable, given the structure of one of the rooms (some large vertical pillars that formed part of the fabric of the building), but this didn't really cause us any problems.

What was a tad disappointing was that it was obvious that the rooms need a little money spending on them to bring them up to scratch. I'm not talking major alterations (I'm aware we didn't pay a huge amount of money to book the rooms) but some chair seats were stained, the duvet covers torn, the towels poor and the decor tired. The bathroom had also seen better days (the shower had no over-bath attachment so had to be hand-held) and the windows didn't seal at all well - and it was very windy on the first night!! There was also some scaffolding outside our window disrupting the view, but that was removed during our second day.

The only other slight concern was the cooked breakfast, which looked lovely but was only just warm. We had a late breakfast (and there is only a 1 hour 'slot' for service) and I'm wondering whether breakfast had been pre-cooked.

The staff were friendly and offered advice when asked.

Finally, the car park is very small and tight, so if you arrive late you might have to find somewhere in the street to park.

Being late October we didn't use the gardens but I'm sure they're lovely in the summer.

The pub down the road serves good pub grub.

This review may sound a little negative but we did have a good time and the hotel was value for money. Just a little cash here and there would definitely be of benefit, though. Hence the overall 4 star rating.
