We loved the spacious reception and lounge areas of the hotel and particularly the 'library' with its realistic open fire and comfy settees. All the staff were very friendly, helpful and efficient, particularly Lauren and the team in the restaurant. We thoroughly enjoyed the breakfasts (with eggs poached to order) and dinners chosen from an interesting menu.
Our room was comfortable, clean and quiet. We slept soundly and were in danger of over-sleeping one morning! Ask for a shower mat if your room has an over-bath shower as the bath is quite slippery.
We made use of the nearby Park and Ride (bendy-buses!) to reach the city centre which took all the hassle out of finding somewhere to park. It was, however, the weekend of one of the Christmas markets, so the queues for the return trip were very long. One 'find' was the craft market at St William's College, near the National Trust shop.
Most Yorkshire folk are friendly and full of character. In the city, one lovely lady even stopped and asked if she could help us, as we stood studying our street map.
Over all, a very enjoyable stay, even if it was frrreeeezing outside.

I celebrated my 30th in York with my friends and stayed here. We were greeted with friendly staff, and noticed how lovely and spacious it was inside. The rooms were clean and had everything we needed for our night's stay. Breakfast the next morning was yummy, helping ourselves to what we wanted, plenty of tea and toast too!!
Overall I would definitely recommend this hotel, the staff couldn't have been more helpful x

We went to the fairfield manor to celebrate a friends birthday in York in November, any worrys about how far out of the city the hotel might be was quickly forgotten once in the hotel. The reception and bar area every welcoming and comfortable as are the rooms. The staff were all very friendly and helpful and the buffet breakfast was delicious. As I said we went to celebrate a birthday but I am hoping to go back with my family because its a lovely hotel which is a great base to spend time exploring York.

Booked through Expedia at a very good price early December. Visiting family, so did not take any meals. Also found staff very helpful. Room a good size and very comfortable single beds with Excellent pillows. Only complaint here - a thin duvet in the winter. However, night manager soon found us additional duvets. The heating system a bit antiquated but adequate. Loads of parking.

Arrived on a Saturday afternoon in mid November for our wedding anniversary and annual 1 night away from the kids . Room reasonably furnished; bed comfy but a bit wobbly. Reception was really big and welcoming with a fire lit in the lounge and a decorated [a bit early for Xmas but pretty anyway] sunken seating area by the bar. Wanted a quiet room and couldn't hear any noise from the main road so assumed that would suffice........until we went to bed !
There was a staff party in a private room and at varous times after midnight guest kept going out of the hotel to the car park for a smoke a chat and a laugh. At 4am some revellers were keen on talking at the top of their voices in the corridor outside our room so a "good night's sleep" was not had by all and it did spoil our stay somewhat feeling like jet-lagged zombies the next morning dreading doing a day's sight-seeing in York !
The restuarant was a pleasant surprise with a good choice of courses from both set menu and a la carte. Service was very friendly and prompt. An even better choice was available at breakfast with additional "cooked to order" choices.
The situation of the hotel about a quarter of a mile from the ring road was good.Rather than drive into the centre of York and find somewhere to park the very efficient "Park & Ride" bus service to the city centre was situated by the ring road.
As city centre hotels of the same standard were much dearer I'd say the Mercure Fairfield was very good value for money although might be worth checking first if they have any parties booked first [or take ear plugs !].

Room Tip: Get a room at the back of the hotel well away from the car park/entrance

Dear Guest,

Thank you for providing us with a review. It is disappointing to note that your recent experience was a bitter sweet one, and an experience which we would like to consider an isolated one. We would like to point out that had the situation been brought to our attention, it would have warranted immediate action, as the welfare of all our guests is of importance to us. We are pleased that you have had the pleasure of the food and service in our restaurant, and would like to thank you for bringing your concerns to our attention.

Got woken up on the first night at 1 am in the morning by other guests shouting and running between rooms and they didn't shut up until 3.30 am! Second night got woken up with other guests letting their room doors bang shut and children from the wedding that was being held running up and down the corridors until I told them to stop. The bed and pillows was pretty uncomfortable, bed too soft and pillows like bricks.

On a lighter note the service from the staff was excellent and the food was very good.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for providing us with a review of your recent stay. Naturally, we find it disappointing to learn of your recent experience. As a hotel, we promote an environment of tranquility, where all our guests can enjoy an array of services. It is apparent that your experience has not been satisfactory, due to a few isolated cases from inconsiderate guests. We would like to assure you that going forward, we have put extra measures in place in ensuring the same experience does not affect any future guests staying in our hotel, and would like to thank you for bringing your concerns to our attention.

Dont be put off this hotel by its side view if you are coming into it from the A19, it did put me off at first, however on entering the hotel its lovely, plenty of lounge chairs and places to sit in the reception area, very clean and fairly modern/ The rooms are nothing special, however they have everything you need. Bathroom very clean with nice soft towels. One critiscism however is plastic milk and not enough of it, for the cost of the room i would have expected fresh milk or if nothing else plenty of the plastic stuff.
Breakfast this morning was very nice with plenty of choice both buffet style and to order. plenty of hot tea and toast available. However do check when you are booking that your breakfast is included as if you are booking through an agent it may not be included, if you have to pay for breakfast its £10 if you prebook at reception,if you sit down in the dining room it then becomes £13,
Location is not great for a night out on the town as its approx £17 one way in a taxi so it can become expensive.
Staff are very helpful and willing to please.
Overall well worth a stay.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for providing us with your recent review. We invest a considerable amount of time in ensuring that the services and facilities made available to all our guests are of a really high standard, and are happy to provide requests, such as fresh milk, to any guest who has this requirement. Additionally, we would like to point out that on average, a taxi into town is normally in the region of no more than £10.00. We trust that everything else associated with your stay was to your liking.
