My family and I come for Sunday lunch at least once a month. The dinners are amazing. Its always busy in the bar so sometimes you have to wait for a table but food comes out within 5 minutes. The offer a small portion of the lunch which is huge itself. Homemade yorkshire puddings and roast potatoes. Staff friendly and polite. Desserts are delicious and home made. My favourite pub in the region and food is consistently great! Plates always go back empty and clean.

My Wife and I decided to visit the pub for lunch.
The pub is cosy and the staff very welcoming. We choose hoe made soup which came piping hot, and did taste lie real home made soup (not your usual packet of powder job) The chips we shared were also very good again tasting home made.
We will definitely be visiting again when we are in that area!

Stayed here one night with hubby after attending a local race meeting. Charming building and the staff were all very friendly & helpful. Dinner was good. The rib beef was beautiful, but the described monkfish cheeks and mussels were in fact mussels with 2 incredibly small & overlooked monkfish cheeks. The main ingredient should be listed first, and had it been so hubby wouldn't have ordered it. My sticky toffee pudding was very good & there was a good selection of wine reasonably priced. The bedroom was clean but tired looking. No curtain in the bathroom which was annoying. Even with the frosted glass I felt a lack of privacy & can't understand why this would have been overlooked. A small roller or roman blind could easily and cheaply been fitted. The bed mattress was awful and well overdue replacement. Springs have gone and even turn had us feeling some spring or other catching then rebounding, with a loud BOING! Neither hubby or I could sleep properly and felt exhausted next day. I mentioned this to the lady on check out who sympathised, but she is only an employee and management must be aware of the problem. One look at the mattress tells you it's past it's best. Would we eat there again next time at the races? Yes. Would we stay? No.

Camping in Sedgefield for 5 nights, so the treat was Saturday night at The Dun Cow. Well worth the excellent reviews. We were a party of ten all ate something different of the extensive menu and all sent back clean plates. All the food was served hot and together must be a very run kitchen. Will go back next time in the area.

Travelled 40 miles to give the restaurant a try after reading about it a while ago in the Sunday Sun. It was well worth it. It was very busy but plenty of staff and the service was good and the staff friendly. My husband and I opted for the roast beef and we were not disappointed.

This was my first trip to England (my husband and I were in the Stockton-on-tees area for a conference). And I was happy to find the quaint quirkiness of the Dun Cow pub and inn rooms--as well as the wit and friendliness of the owner and staff--to be exactly what I imagined a rural English inn would offer!

This is no luxury hotel... it is a (cozy and comfortable), PLACE TO STAY. Nor does their restaurant offer fine dining; it's a PLACE WHERE PEOPLE EAT (good, well-prepared food from a varied menu).

And though in a rural setting, on the main street of a quiet little English village called Sedgefield, the Dun Cow was not without it's refinements... The owner, and dignified host, was present EVERY NIGHT in button down shirt and jacket, clearing dinner tables, conversing with guests, encouraging dessert choices (everything home-made), to slant in the direction of his favorite--a house invention called "The Mess." Evening tables donned crisp white tablecloths, candles and fresh flowers... The kitchen received the highest hygiene rating (posted on the front door), and meals were priced JUST RIGHT (we hosted a table of nine adults, including wine and desserts, for about £250)... I saw couples having romantic dinners, families celebrating, groups of TGIF co-workers winding down, at least one girlfriend clatch, they seemed to stay for a three hour lunch....

Rooms were "comfortably worn" from guest use--but clean. The furniture was REAL; mostly old, sturdy pieces that retained their handsomeness despite some dents and scrapes. Heavy, well-tailored and lined full length drapes kept ambient street and early morning light out. Bedding was high thread-count, 100% cotton with damask duvet cover. Clean towels were delivered EVERY morning. Bathroom... was in-suite and clean. Room prices also more than reasonable.

These things COMBINED with a staff of people who genuinely seemed to like their work AND THE GUESTS THEY SERVED are what made the Dun Cow so pleasant. I especially enjoyed Salvadore (sp?), an entertaining and attentive sommelier. And Sheila, the main breakfast gal, was as friendly and accommodating as your favorite Aunt....

What makes this place so charming is the AUTHENTICITY of it... no pretentiousness here. It was a true reflection of the humorous and kind, generous hearted people of the area, whom we came to know during our short conference.

All in all, the perfect introduction for me--a former B&B owner--to lodging in non-urban England.

Room Tip: Room #5 is slightly larger and faces away from the street so is more quiet. But watch out for late n...
