We stayed at Hardwick Hall for three nights (on a Superbreak package). Lower floor room on left of hotel away from wedding functions so very quiet Very spacious bathroom with large bath, two washbasins, separate loo and walk in shower. Breakfast on Friday and Saturday freshly cooked and very good quality, buffet breakfast on Sunday (lots of wedding guests) not as good. enjoyed the views and walks round the lake and country park. Did not eat in the restaurant as meeting friends and exploring the region.

Room Tip: Ask for rooms on the left of the hotel away from any functions. Possibly Saturday night not the best...

My husband and I chose to spend the second night of our wedding anniversary weekend break here on the basis that we originally booked here when we got married (many moons ago) but could not afford it so here we were - in a Premier room with great expectations. First the positives - all (except 1) staff were very friendly and helpful, the room was immaculate and beautifully presented, complete with great shower, comfortable bed and lovely toiletries. The steak in the restaurant was great and breakfast was lovely (though did not expect help-yourself buffet style). The negatives (in order of experience) - mediocre service for afternoon tea with no co-ordination with other activities in hotel: we chose to sit in lounge area rather than the bar and ended up surrounded by loud wedding guests arriving - extremely uncomfortable for us as we were watched and made to feel in the way. In my opinion we should have been advised not to sit there as they knew the wedding party would be arriving. The afternoon tea itself was nothing to shout about - there are much better teas in other places. The complimentary fruit and sweets in the PREMIER ROOM consisted of 1 orange, 2 apples and a small dish of Fox fruit boiled sweets - hardly complete luxury. The restaurant was nice (a few very loud groups in but we were seated away from them fortunately) however the prices matched with what is served deems the overall experience to border on pretentious - seriously, £2.50 for 6 chips. It tasted nice, presented nicely but £100 on a meal inc 1 bottle of house wine where we were only just pleasantly full - mmm. Finally - and the biggest influence for us not to choose to return to re-test: the noise. Even in our luxury room we could hear every footstep, door-knock and voice of guests in the hallway (and beyond). The noise carried awfully and was truly a disappointment. Being woken at 1am by constant knocking and women squealing for whatever drunken reason did not help this matter. As other reviewers have said - overall this feels like a place where wedding and other celebration groups rule the roost and so does NOT make for a lovely romantic break for a private couple. If you are visiting as a group then you may well enjoy the lovely surroundings - if it is a private, secluded romantic break for two I really would NOT recommend this hotel. Please look at my other review for what does make the perfect break.

Stayed one night on business, given a room on the lower floor. Very spacious, excellent bathroom, with walk in shower and large roll top bath. Very good steak in the restaurant, but do object to having to pay £2.50 for six chips!

Booked this on the internet and to be honest didn't really read all the info thoroughly and so failed to spot the fact that the hotel is a major wedding and function location.

I booked the hotel because it looked secluded and peaceful. I was competing in a cycle race the following day so wanted somewhere I would not be disturbed. When I arrived, wedding guests were standing in front of the hotel laughing and joking - as you would at such an event.

When I checked in I hoped my room would be 'round the back' but was dismayed to find my window opened onto the wedding guests I had seen on arrival. I can't sleep with the window shut.

Back down to reception, explained the problem. The response was simpy outstanding. They only had two rooms available, one further away from the party but still overlooking it and another that was small with the window facing a roof and a very limited view - Room 414.

Took Room 414, small but perfectly formed, quiet, even with the window wide open. No disturbance at all. There were wedding guests still up when I left at 6am!

Had dinner in the restaurant - service was excellent and the food was also extremely good. i had the risotto starter and linguine main. Both perfectly prepared and plenty of it. Choice on the menu was extensive and if I wasn't riding the following day would have enjoyed a steak.

Nothing was too much trouble, the room was immaculate in every respect, staff were all friendly and helpful, even the guy setting up breakfast at 5.30 am.

Would happily recommend and go back.

The hotel is set in wonderful surroundings and within the hotel is a fantastic steak restaurant. However, that’s where the praise ends. We booked a Premier Room and were sent to the back of the hotel overlooking the back car park and a metal container that the staff proceeded to open and close all day (I believe they keep supplies in this container). I say we were sent as no one offered to assist us with luggage. They have a statue of a butler in the reception – which was the height of irony. The room was dark and the plumbing was terrible. The shower overflowed and water went everywhere including the bedroom. One of the basins was also clogged.
In our view this is not a hotel. It’s a conference / wedding venue. Obviously the priority is on this business and little emphasis is placed on regular hotel guests. The music / disco prevented us from having a quite relaxing night and the wedding guests yelled and frolicked in the hallways until all hours of the morning. They place no separation between hotel and wedding guests, so you always feel like you are attending the wedding. The numerous weddings just take over all aspects of the hotel. Was not a pleasant experience at all.
Doubt we will be returning. Still I don’t think they really would care … providing the wedding business kept pouring in.

We were not meant to stay at this hotel but as our chosen hotel had a problem with a trashed room we were asked to go here instead. The outside looks almost modern having driven off the road throughlovely grounds with an avenue of trees. Although on reading the history it is definitely not as young as it looks Our room was lovely - upgraded - large and well decorated, in a quiet location overlooking garden and a beautiful lake. A very good first impression! We have stayed in a lot of hotels and I can honestly say it had one of the nicest bathrooms we have had, a roll top bath, his and her sinks and a huge walk in shower together with a sectioned off toilet with own glass door. Large t.v. and a bed that would fit four and which was extremely comfortable. We tore ourselves away from our room for a drink in the bar and to explore downstairs. Reception, the bar/lounge was very pleasant although in daylight may have been improved with a little refurbishment. The staff were friendly and helpful. Downstairs in what I would describe as a cellar was a very quaint restaurant with tables in different areas plus some in alcoves. The breakfast room was upstairs and seem very bright and well presented. Following a drink in the bar we retired once again to our fab room and showered and changed having decided to try the restaurant, although the bar also served, what appeared to be very adequate meals. We ordered scallops for starters followed by posh fish and chips - which should be for a cost of £16.99, but what the hell! We were brought olives and sundried tomatoes in a lovely oil and crusty bread first, free gratis which was delightful with our first glass of excellent wine. Our fish and chips was indeed 'posh' halibut in a wonderful crisp batter, curled and cooked to perfection with home made chips in a basket and pea puree - fab, best I have had. To full for desert but looked good. We retired with our drinks to the bar which was busy but not hectic - very good evening. After a lovely quiet, sleep we had a well cooked (not buffet) breakfast - plenty of fruit, cereals, juices, toast and pastries. A walk round the grounds before setting off finished stay perfectly. Disappointed at first not to be at our original hotel but definitely not disappointed in Hardwick Hall.

Room Tip: Unless there is a wedding or conference I would imagine all the rooms are quiet as hotel is in own g...
