“Dining experience from hell”
Reviewed February 16, 2014

February 15th 2014.
Ourselves and 2 other couples had made reservations a couple of weeks previous to this date and were looking forward to a delicious dinner out at the Manitoulin Hotel & Conference Centre.
One of the couples in our little group had arrived ahead of us and were enjoying a before dinner cocktail. The rest of us thought this was a fabulous idea and after a very long time the waitress made an appearance at our table and took the drink order. Four Caesars! Not too difficult. It took long enough to produce these drinks that we considered ordering seconds as soon as the first ones showed up in order not to suffer a lapse.
Sorry, did I say produce these cocktails? I meant to say pour them out of a bottle and into a glass!
When the drinks did show up the waitress inquired about out dinner selections.
The food order was as follows:
1 Bison burger platter
3 orders of Primerib. Rare, medium rare and medium.
1 order of Tortillini
1 order of New York Strip Loin
Appetizers were also ordered: Tiger Shrimp and Brushetta
While we waited for the food we chatted and had a few laughs. Our second round of bottled Caesars showed up but now we didn't get the lovely lemon/olive garnish that came with the first round.(must have been an introductory special)
Now the night starts to fall apart.
The first one thing to come out of the kitchen is our salads.
When I inquired about the appetizers the sous chef had no clue what I was talking about but tried to tell us the salads were the appetizers.
Next out of the kitchen was the Tortillini and the Prime Rib orders.
The Tortillini was hot and looked very appetizing.
The Primerib was just placed in front of us with no inquiry about who had ordered the rare or medium or medium rare. These cuts of meat were also covered in gravy, which no one had ordered and it was impossible to check for doneness.
While cutting the potato that was with my meal I noticed no steam coming off the potato so I checked and they were cold. Not room temperature. COLD! And the same condition applied to the meat and the vegetable.
At this point we asked the server about getting our meals reheated.NO Problem.
She grabbed our plates, stacked them on top of each other and assured us new portions would be coming.
Another inquiry about the appetizers revealed that they had no shrimp. They must have thought we would forget about ordering these.
Now if I your keeping track, 6 people have ordered food. 4 have been served. No appetizers have made it to the table and only 1 dish was satisfactory.
At this point the server returns from the kitchen and informs us that the grill has been shut off and we can not be served any food at all.
Now I want to talk to Chef Stewart but he is not available, nor is a Hotel Manager.
BUT
We were assured that we would not have to pay for any services received due to all the errors.
We will not be going back except to chat with Chef Stewart. I think he should be aware of what goes on when he is not there.
Our little dinner gang consisted of 5 people whom are in constant contact with the public. It is to bad we cannothave anything good to say about this establishment.

Visited the Manitoulin Hotel & Conference Center for a short 3 day business trip. Can't comment on the pool or warm weather amenities as I stayed in November. The architecture, design and furnishings of the hotel are striking and the front desk staff were very pleasant.

Room was clean and comfortable with fixtures normally found in much more expensive hotels. Lots of room, didn't feel cramped, climate control worked well. Nice view of the water out the window.

Off season, there weren't a lot of places to eat open nearby so I elected to have dinners in the hotel restaurant. It's open in the morning with a breakfast buffet but unlike many hotels it is not complimentary, though has quite a bit more variety and better quality than those.
Dinner quality was decent, but fairly limited menu and was a bit on the expensive side for what was served.

Overall, nice place, would certainly stay again if I have occasion to visit the beautiful area of Manitoulin Island. A bit pricey for cooler weather, but the hotel was nearly full with construction folks and other travelers, and there weren't too many other options nearby.

Room Tip: Front side faces highway, backside has a nice view of the channel and fishing boats behind.

Stopped in for lunch! 11:45 am. Had to ask at the hotel front desk where the restaurant was, no signage, none outside either. Went in, no one person was there. Assumed they were closed. Walked around enjoyed the view. Sat down, still nobody! Was at least 10 minutes when one of our party went to the Washroom. The waiter was in the women bathroom. ??
Finally got a coffee, quite a while till we ordered then waited an unacceptable time to get a meal for 4 people. Little to chose from on the menu. Burgers were very tasty, but fries were barley warm. We were the only ones in the Restaurant for over an hour. Going back....I doubt it!

We went in yesterday and fell in love right away with the architecture which is subtly accented with Duncan Pheasant's lovely acrylic paintings (OK, we're biased having one in our home and 2 more at our son's place in the States) but seriously it's great to have a facility like this on the Island but also only an hour and a half from Sudbury.
We watched the food being served in the Banquet Hall and Chef Stuart Raymond is still at his best. We ate in the Dining Room which has huge windows overlooking the water. The patio looks lovely too - though its is bit chilly for that right now. So how was the food?
Wonderful! we had the grilled whitefish with a gentle sauce and great veggies. The house salad was fresh and crunchy with a raspberry pepper vinaigrette. Several other Stuart specials are on the menu too. Then, just when we thought it couldn't get better, the Hawberry Cheesecake (a nod to the Manitoulin tradition) arrived to melt the mouth. The coulis in a First Nations pattern was an added touch.
For us this completed a lovely day on the Island.

Room Tip: Get the view of the water! And you don't have to stay here to eat in the Dining Room

I am a first year medical student at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine and my class and I had the opportunity to stay at the Manitoulin Hotel and Conference Centre during our orientation week. We had an excellent time at this Hotel and Conference Centre. The staff were very friendly and helpful, the accommodations were beautiful and the food was delicious. As a whole the Manitoulin Hotel and Conference Centre was a very serene and peaceful location and would strongly recommend this location to other travellers.

Sincerely,
-NOSM Students.

This is hotel opened June this year 2013. We stayed for four nights. The decor and motif reflects the island local flavour being a Canadian Aboriginal Island. The original paintings and prints by Duncan Pheasant- a local native artist are just so pretty and colourful. My husband bought the print in our room since he liked it so much. They were kind enough to take it off the wall for us.
The rooms are nice. They have a small ref, Kurig coffee maker, shower stall with glass doors but no soap dish or holder.
The staff are so helpful and willing to please. The location is great. Situated right behind the causeway and walking distance to the old swinging bridge and the town of Little current. You can walk right behind to the marina. The restaurant had a very good grilled Whitefish Dinner. I had it twice. I'd highly recommend this hotel to everyone. Will definitely come back.

Room Tip: Ask for the water view.

This hotel was such a surprise as it doesn't look too inviting from the exterior, maybe a bit of landscaping would help. However, the interior is very appealing, the staff were caring and attentive, rooms very clean, food great - what else to say? The hotel is still doing some finishing touches as it only opened in May but they are well on their way to having a first class place to stop. We were here in September with some overseas visitors and they really appreciated the First Nations' aspect, especially the beautiful art by Mr. Pleasance. A nice gesture was providing a notecard of his art in each room. Our friends bought more to take home to Australia. During the summer the terrace overlooking the water would be fantastic. There is really nowhere else to stay in Little Current where you would want to bring visitors from other parts of Canada or overseas.

Room Tip: Make sure you get a room on the north side, overlooking the North Channel, and as high up as you can...
