“Our New Tradition”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 13, 2013

My husband and I just returned from a 4-night stay at Silver Birches in mid-May and we will cherish the memories from this getaway for a lifetime. Overall, I would say that our trip was so memorable because of two main factors: the people we met and the breathtaking natural setting. I am sure that Silver Birches is a place we will return to again and again- our newest tradition!

The management went above and beyond our expectations- so unbelievably generous, friendly and welcoming. The family who runs the resort quickly befriended us and welcomed us into their community of kind, fun-loving friends. We had just a fantastic time getting to know them and we could tell it was important to them that we enjoyed our stay at Silver Birches. Their website says "happy hour starts when you get here" and they weren't kidding! These folks were a blast, and they've got hearts of gold.

We enjoyed fishing, hiking the extensive trails on their breathtaking property, seeing the local wildlife, campfires with new friends, eating breakfast on the tranquil stony beach and watching incredible sunsets from our deck. My husband was at work during the day but I was never bored- too much to see and do and too many great people to meet! We were also grateful to find a place that was so wonderful about us bringing our dog. I actually think our pup wanted to stay behind when it was time to go home!

We stayed in Cabin #9. It was rustic, clean, private and surrounded by nature. There was a great deck with a breathtaking view of the water (sunset- WOW!) and path down to the beach. The website advised that the cabin was very basically equipped so we brought some amenities from home, but only ended up using our own towels (though we were offered some by the owners), dish soap/cloth, large travel mugs and griddle. I am sure that the managers could get you anything you needed (they asked us several times if we required anything), but as the website advises, it's a good idea to remember that they advertise their cabins as not completely-stocked in terms of odds-n-ends so bring anything you can't live without just in case. Our cabin had a basic set of plates/cups/utensils for 4, coffee maker, toaster, microwave, oven/stove, full fridge with freezer, clean sheets with nice pillows with a FABULOUS mattress on the bed, comfy couch, jacuzzi tub and a stunning stone fireplace. We were cozy and comfortable there.

To anyone considering this resort, I strongly advise that you read their website's "RATES" page- they are very transparent about what to expect. If you aren't into what comes along with a cabin experience in the wilderness (the odd bug, woodland creatures, and rustic accommodations), then maybe a 5-star spa resort in New York is a better vacation for you... we don't want grumpy, complaint-driven people with unrealistic expectations giving our new friends a hard time! On the other hand, if you are friendly, low-maintenance and laid-back folks, I can't recommend this place highly enough. I am sure you will love Silver Birches just as much as we did. It was perfect for folks like us!

Hello friends ! I wanted to thank you for joining us this year for the first time and for becoming life long friends. We had a great time with you and Emmie-loo as well. Remember that Happy Hour is only here when the people that bring it are...Silver Birches is sad now that you are gone but we will see eachother again.Thank you for your kind words...Silver Birches has a strange way of making all of us family, whether it is here or there, I am sure that we will know one another until the sun never sets. What is your favorite color in the sunsets ? he he. lol

The entire island is littered with places that need a facelift: homes, businesses, hotels and campsites alike, but and while little details were imperfect here (Cabin 9: a window pane has come off the tracks, and it looked like there may have been squirrels attempting to break in at some point) it was by far the most well maintained site we'd seen travelling the entire island...

We stopped there on our Honeymoon. We'd been camping for a couple nights and decided to upgrade - and get some sleep in a real bed since thunderstorms had kept us up the whole night prior. We had stopped at a couple other cottage resorts before finding this one, not finding the ambiance we were hoping for.

When we got to Silver Birches, it was EXACTLY what we were looking for, (and we're now seriously considering making a regular trip out of it). We pulled in and were immediately greeted by a smiling Rachael who told us of a one bedroom cottage available. She suggested we go take a look before deciding. We drove back to the cabin to find a private, secluded, comfortable cabin with a fireplace and all the amenities. There was a path leading to a Rocky Beach on Lake Huron (facing West!! And we got settled in just in time for a BEAUTIFUL sunset!).

Rachael and her husband drove us out some firewood, clean sheets and towels, chatted a while and told us how we could reach them if needed and left us to enjoy the beautiful views.

It was an extremely refreshing stay, and it invigorated us for another day of hiking along the local trails.

Hello honeymooners and thank you for your wonderful message. You did look tired from the rain the evening before. I am happy that you found peace and serenity here and that you had an evening that you were looking for during your special time. Remember your moment when you watch the sun set in the sky. Good luck with the first year of marriage and keep in touch.

Just returned home to Thunder Bay from a week of relaxation and fun at Silver Birches! Rachael & Corey are extremely welcoming and a fun couple to be around. My family have always enjoyed our time there for large family reunions and we try to return every August for sheer relaxation with spectacular sunsets, sunrises, outdoor fire-pit gatherings and quiet days near the water reading, or in the water swimming. I have been to many places but Silver Birches has always been the place we return to as it satisfies all our needs no mater what your age or interests. Rachael and Corey will happily answer any questions about the Island and welcome everyone with open arms. Looking forward to another great week at Silver Birches!

Hello my friend from cottage number four !! My family is honored that after all of these decades of your family joining the previous owners and then staying on with us, thank you so kindly. It is always a pleasure to have you and yours here. We look forward to it every year and cannot wait to have you back again. Garry and I stayed here a few years back and we returned on July 6 for a long weekend and had the best time. The location is great, the cottage was rustic and charming. They have, i think 22 cottages, but you feel as if you are alone when at your own cottage, very private. Rachael and Corey are welcoming and friendly, enjoyed spending time with them at the end of the day. Garry and I will certainly be back to visit Silver Birches again very soon.

Room Tip: all cottages are very private, we stayed in cottage #9

My grand daughter and I had a wonderful time at Silver Birches and have already planned next year's holidays there. Rachel, Corey and the family made us feel at home and entertained us with their wit and charm. They are knowledgeable about interesting places to visit on the island and very helpful when I needed information about local crafts and good places to eat. The cottage was beautiful with a window that looked out on the bay. It was clean, bright and came with all amenities needed during our stay. The fishing is good and Corey knows where the best spots are on the bay. Cannot wait till next year.

Room Tip: ask for cabin #1 if you need a 3 bedroom and #4 for a 2 bedroom

Our cottages are well spaced with approximately an acre of land and the waterfront cottages have their own provate shoreline. We are looking for people who are "Silver Birches" material. If you are high maintenance or complaint driven or afraid of the dark or getting dirt on your shoes of animals or nature then please do not book with us. The last thing we want to have here are grumpy people. If you wont miss concrete sidewalks or crowded places then come to Silver Bircjes Resort for a Canadian vaction. ... more   less
