“Very comfortable, very relaxing vacation at the Chai”

My husband and I stayed at the Chai for four nights in August, intending to spend time in and around Bergerac. Our nine-year-old daughter was with us. The Chai is very comforably equipped and furnished, and Jane and Martin were welcoming hosts. They provided a basket of snacks and a bottle of wine on our arrival, which was much appreciated. We stayed around the house perhaps more than we had intended because it was so comfortable, but getting to Bergerac when we wanted to was easy. We went into town for half a day to take a ride on a Gabarre, a traditional style boat, and have dinner. We went in another day for the weekly market, which was fabulous. There was lots of information at the Chai about things to visit and to do, and we made good use of it.

We would definitely stay at the Chai again.

“Great accommodation in convenient yet quiet situation.”
Reviewed September 8, 2014 for a stay in August 2014

We received a warm welcome from Jane and Martin. Spacious accommodation which is very well equipped, clean and with nice furnishings. Situated in a quiet spot, yet only 5 mins drive to Bergerac, and well positioned for accessing surrounding attractions and towns. Good quality and value for money. Would definitely go back in future.

“Absolutely Fantastic”
Reviewed May 18, 2014 for a stay in May 2014

My husband and I have just returned from a week's holiday at this property. The property is very clean and well equipped. It had absolutely everything we could possibly need. Our hosts Jane and Martin were on hand if required but never intrusive. Many thanks to them for their hospitality. The welcome pack was much appreciated and even included a bottle of local wine.

The property is well situated for the local town and within easy driving distance of local vineyards and tourist attractions. We have no hesitation in recommending it to others and would stay here again. We had a wonderfully relaxing holiday - batteries well and truly recharged.

“perfect in every way”
Reviewed March 17, 2014 for a stay in March 2014

What a fabulous holiday we have just had ! We stayed in the Chai and it was absolutely lovely. We received a very warm welcome from Jane and Martin and they invited us to have lunch with them as soon as we arrived. The Chai is spotlessly clean and provides everything and more for a great holiday. We wanted for nothing, but I am sure if we had needed anything Jane & Martin would have sorted it out for us. They really are a lovely couple and you feel right at home. The location of the property is beautiful - quiet and picturesque, but in 10 minutes you are in the gorgeous town of Bergerac. This was our first trip to France and we were enchanted by the little villages and beautiful Medieval towns, some close by and some a little further afield. If we return to this part of France again, there is only one place we would stay and that is with Jane & Martin. We would like to say a huge thankyou to them both for making our stay PERFECT !!!!.

“Comfortable well equipped property, good location”
Reviewed January 13, 2014 for a stay in December 2013

We spent Christmas here and had a wonderful time. The hosts, Jane and Martin, were helpful and friendly and most welcoming. The property was very comfortable, warm and cosy and extremely well equipped. I brought the usual extras for self catering (corkscrew, favourite knife, torch, matches etc) and didn’t need any of them, it was all there already, even down to a generous supply of toilet paper, dish-washer tablets and wood for the burner! We also appreciated the many thoughtful extra touches – including a prettily decorated Christmas tree and a welcome pack with lots of tasty goodies. All rooms are spacious, a good big shower and comfortable beds. There is good “real food” shopping in Bergerac beside the church, and of course plenty of supermarkets around the outskirts.

“Unprofessional owner spoilt our Christmas”
Reviewed January 2, 2014 for a stay in December 2013

We a booked this Gite for a quiet Christmas get away, it ticked all the boxes. We arrived at the time we agreed with the owners, only to be accused of being early Martin, one of the owners. He then gave us a lecture on the car parking etiquette. He showed us around the kitchen and then gave us a lecture about how to use the non-stick pans.
After unpacking we found the property lived up to its description and well fitted, the welcome basket was very nice. Jayne and Martin invited us to a welcome drink and supper the following night. It was a nice gesture, they entertained us well and were given a breakdown on the project to convert the building into the nearly finished product.
The break progressed nicely, the property is conveniently located for Bergerac and the surrounding Dordogne area. However the holiday came to an abrupt end when we decided to leave a day early. This was due to unprovoked verbal barrage from Martin; his insulting and patronising unprofessional manner became too much and put pay to our festive break
Would I stay there again, no. Would I recommend it, no. There are many Gites in the area to choose from, why choose one that you pay good money only to be patronised and insulted.

So very sorry that Mr Brown did not feel comfortable here by the end of his stay, and even more so that he considers us unprofessional. I think it fair to say that we did not always feel quite comfortable with him either but hoped we had done our best to offer our usual welcome. I agree I was wrong footed on their arrival as he indicated the party would arrive after lunch and I was just finishing the final hoovering when they arrived at 1 pm. For parking we have a communal carpark and allot each property a space, so that it works well for all users. I checked once the party had settled in that all was well, and they seemed pleased. We try and be helpful to our guests. Mr Brown does not mention that we agreed they could bring their lovely dog, under certain conditions. One of the conditions of the stay was that the animal should not be left on his own in the property. We discussed that in an email before the guest made the booking, but on their arrival afternoon the dog was left for two hours on his own. He was a young dog and understandably distressed at being left so soon after a long journey so barked loudly for the time they were away. We sorted that out with them and appreciated the fact that they did not leave him on his own again. We did our best to make the dog feel welcome too, but the owners probably didn't realise that it was difficult for us as their dog management régime was not the same as ours. Our expectations are perhaps too high for we are used to highly trained working animals. This meant that as the week went on having a dog on site became more intrusive than we have experienced in the past and created tensions, which we tried to contain but my husband requested, on what turned out to be their last morning, that Mr Brown be more attentive about the freedom of the dog in our communal areas, shared by other guests and ourselves. Perhaps my husband was wrong to then raise the issue again more strongly, when the matter was not addressed by our guest, in which case we apologise. It was shortly after that the Brown family started to pack up to leave. We thought they were leaving to break up their long journey back to the UK, for I had organised a vet's appointment for them earlier that morning so the dog's paperwork was in order for them to return to the UK. We have learned from this complaint that maybe we should not have dogs here even though it has worked in the past perfectly well. We will therefore reconsider our policy.

We had a very pleasant stay here for the last week of August 2013. The property was exactly as described. It was well equipped, better than previous properties we have rented. Very helpful and friendly hosts, Jane and Martin. There was a very nice welcome pack when we arrived. A good shower, comfortable beds and a well equipped kitchen. The terrace was good for outside dining and there was a grassed area in the paddock with a goal and badminton nets etc for the children.
