It's nice to find something different and the beers one ale one draught was certainly that.
Beef and oyster pie. Tasty and well presented with great vegetables. Very quiet but waiting for the Xmas in June rush . definitely worth a visit

“Stunning building”
Reviewed June 24, 2014

The abrupt greeting does not make the one feel welcome, the food was average and menu a little on the expensive side. Wish the new owners well in the new premises

Hi,
I read all of this persons reviews on Tulbagh and I feel that this is a false report, I am 99% sure of that because almost everything they say is wrong, the comments about us been expensive is nonsense we recently carried out a survey on prices in and around Tulbagh and found that we are in fact very good value for money, example we sell a 250Gr AAA Grade Fillet with choice of Jacket potato, Rice or Belgian Chips and choice of Salad or veg (Full Portion) , the Restaurant that they raved about is very average and charged (last time we were there) R110 for a 200Gr fillet (Tough so it could have been Ribeye) with 4 or 5 slices of carrot & beans & 2 small potatoes. When comparing things one MUST compare Apples with Apples. Also our staff are very polite and efficient.

“Lots of promise”
Reviewed June 23, 2014

The Belgian Kitchen is sited on the premises of the old Paddagang restaurant and many people expect it to be the same. Patrons should note, however, that the old restaurant went bust and The Belgian Kitchen has taken over the premises and serves Belgian food. The menu is extensive, with loads of Belgian classics, and offers something for everyone. There is also a kiddie's menu.
We popped in for a light lunch and were delighted with croquettes, fresh-cut frites and home-made mayonaisse - followed, piggishly on our part, by Belgian waffle. The roaring fire behind us was an added bonus.
Would that we actually needed a bigger meal, because there was plenty on the menu I'd love to have tried. Next time we are in Tulbagh we will definitely go back, as the food is unquestionably authentic - I just hope that waterzooi makes its way onto the menu.
Some reviewers have commented on the attitude of the owner - I think this is unfair - we had a long and pleasant chat with him and he was helpful, friendly and attentive.
Service, while efficient, was a little lack-lustre, but this is the only aspect of our visit about which I have any criticism.
The restaurant is large and sprawling, as are many of the restaurants situated in old buildings in Tulbagh and this can create a lack of intimacy in the dining experience.
This is definitely a restaurant worth watching and I look forward to a repeat visit in the spring.

“Mixed feelings”
Reviewed June 19, 2014

Arriving in Tulbagh we were tired after travelling and our activities for the day. We didn't know where to go, so as always we checked TripAdvisor. We also weren't in the mood for a large crowd, so Belgian Kitchen was the perfect choice, as it was very quiet.
The owner was a little abrupt - which may seem rude to others, but some people just have a certain manner / way of speaking - but 'warmed' a little later in the evening. His wife was very friendly, talkative and full of smiles.
Lovely atmosphere. Beautiful fireplace. Can see how it would be a favourite among locals in summer, as the terrace is just great.
My husband enjoyed the craft beer and duck but unfortunately I was a just a little disappointed with the chicken, as in spite of the very rich sauce the chicken was quite bland (steamed/cooked and not grilled). Will try lunch next time.

Sorry that you did not enjoy everything, I am a Diabetic and unfortunately do sometimes come across as a bit frosty, this is not intentional but a problem of the disease. As for the beers we sell, they are Belgian Beers made in Belgium, some by Monks but they are not Craft Beers.
Most chicken one buys in SA is injected with salt water to add weight, so they can taste over salted. Our Chicken Breasts are organic and have no water injected and we only add a little salt & pepper then they are Grilled, we don't steam anything, so maybe the different taste is unfamiliar, sorry about that. However it seems that we did not frighten you away altogether and we look forward to seeing you again soon.
