Description: The oldest house in Church Street , Tulbagh – Readers. Offering simple, outstanding local and global cuisine, has been able to maintain a standard of excellence that has created a notable reputation with both locals and tourists. The cuisine varies on a daily basis depending on the availability of fresh produce. This provides Carol Collins – Silwood trained Cordon Bleu Chef -a certain challenge in ensuring the creation of dishes using imagination, flair and superb presentation. Certain dishes have become trademarks at Readers but the focus remains on variety, fusion of flavours and combination of unusual ingredients.

“we spend a lovely evening.....”
Reviewed April 25, 2014

.....at "Readers" and celebrated my husbands 70th birthday with family from overseas. We have been friendly welcomed from Carol offered a sherry and all of us decided to have the Wildebeest on a gooseberry sauce, as dessert we choose ice cream which was delicious. A lovely place to stop over in Tulbagh.

“Great Sunday lunch”
Reviewed April 22, 2014 via mobile

Great service, tasty food, affordable local wine list and great setting and atmosphere.

I had the leg of lamb and my wife had the pork chops. The food was ver good and the mint sauce served with the lamb to die for. Wish we had some space left for some of the desserts.

This is great value for money and a great South African experience for locals looking for real "mom" food and tourists looking for real South African home food with a modern twist. A small menu, but an excellet variety, obviously allot of thought and experience gone into the menu.

The welcome sherry poured by the owner on arrival is a great personal touch.

Will be back

“What a find”
Reviewed April 14, 2014

So welcoming when we walked in late afternoon wanting a late lunch. Offered us a sherry straight away which was a great old fashion touch which suit this Restaurant as it is housed in the oldest house in church street. The cat theme was great being a cat lover myself and the resident cat ot cats are friendly. The food fusion and flavours were great, the lamb studel with sun dried tomatoes, local olives and feta wrapped in phyllo was stunning and my partner had the slow roasted lamb shank with pomegranite, also a taste explosion. A wine list of local wines all fairly priced. We wanted to taste the ice cream but were to full, but the host did give us a teaspoon of the balsamic vinegar which was ...wow.

“great lunch and eating experience”
Reviewed April 3, 2014

Great welcome after a long weekend away, all the food looked and tasted divine, and was served on warm plates, vegetables stirfried and fresh which were fantastic. Interesting menu with chocolate stuffed chicken breast and lamb strudel. The bobotie was traditional and very tasty. The service was friendly and quick. Carol came and talked us through the ice creams - believe it of not the best was pickled ginger and wasabi, second runner up balsamic vinegar. Well worth eating here

“excellent food and service”
Reviewed March 25, 2014

Karlina was a great waitress - friendly and helpful. The food was excellent - the pulled pork with guiness was amazing and the chocolate in the chicken breast was great. Carol the owner was great with information of what to do in the area, and the wines were great and affordable.
Overall and great evening and to end with a delicous decadent chocolate mousse and the most interesting flavours of ice cream

Thank you for taking the time to write this review - I hope you had a wonderful stay in Tulbagh and at the Witzenberg. Tulbagh host the Christmas in Winter festival at the end of June - please contact me if interested in reserving a table for the traditional dinner. And just a reminder the ice cream flavours do change and I always have something new to taste. Thank you and look forward to seeing you soon.
