“Fantastic rooms in tranquil vineyards”
Reviewed January 18, 2014

We stayed at Rijk's a couple of weeks ago for 2 nights. Our room had a lovely view of the vineyards. The room is lovely & large, bathroom was fantastic with enough space for toiletries and a separate toilet. The weather was hot as hell (44 degrees at 3pm) so we were very grateful for the aircon! The safe in the room didn't work and the local locksmith didn't deliver before we left. The pool was a little murky although very refreshing considering the air temperature. Rooms can do with a Nespresso machine.

Service can improve though. At breakfast I ordered the ciabatta with scrambled eggs. The eggs were perfectly cooked but were placed on an old hamburger bun that they tried to disguise by toasting it hard. When I complained the manager started making excuses about how scarce ciabatta is in Tulbagh, Perhaps inform the diners or take it off the menu? The rest of the cooked breakfasts were extremely good. There was a charge for latte which we don't understand why. And the coffee was so-so - refer to Nespresso comment above.

We booked dinner at the restaurant and requested that they open a specific bottle of wine for us at 18:30. This was not done and then the same manager who made the ciabatta excuses tried to lie his way out of the situation by saying that they never open wine more than half an hour before diners arrive and that we arrived half an hour early and that is why the wine wasn't opened. The waitress informed us that the day staff never conveyed the message and that, even had we arrived 2 hours later, the wine would still not have been opened. Honesty would have been appreciated rather. Her service was fantastic to say the least: honest, enthusiastic with a sense of humour!

Our dinner was great but the ribs were dry as bone although full of flavour. When we requested a replacement they had run out of "the sauce". They serve fantastic bread with their dinner too - they bake it freshly every afternoon at 3pm, but it's so good that there's never enough left for breakfast the next morning...pity.

When we left, we were surprised to find someone washing our rental car. When inquiring why (from the ciabatta manager), he informed us that they can't have anyone leave their hotel with a dirty car, so it's part of the service. Nice touch!

This is indeed a very fair priced location. The rooms are very nicely designed, the bathroom is huge. All in all The accomodation is more then worth The money you pay. There are only 2 things to mention:
First The water is coloured due to tannin. This Looks very unpleasant. The installation of a proper filtering device would be really nice.
Second is The food (dinner): here i can follow a lot of what has been written so far. There is no experienced Cook in The kitchen. I have ordered what I thought was The easiest dish in The anyway very small menu, The tagliatella salmon. Even this was done in a very poor manner.
In a nutshell: you should go there and enjoy The beautyfull location AND go Out for dinner to The town.

We stayed for one night in Rijks Country House. The rooms were excellent. Spacious, luxurious and well fournished. Beautiful bathroom with double shower and bath. 35 degrees during the day, so we relaxt by the pool under the trees. Food was delicious. Staff very friendly, even washed our car!

The setting is idyllic, especially if you are sitting out on a balmy evening, watching the sun go down over beds of roses in front of rows of wines. Best to book though, because the outside tables are often taken.

The menu is quite limited: I opted for spare ribs. A single rack was more than adequate, and they were very tender with the meat—as it should be—almost falling off the bone. A little too sticky and sweet for my taste though. The accompanying chips (french fries), which were buried under the ribs, were not that great, while the onion rings might have been crispier.

There are some kiddies options on the menu: in fact it’s probably a good place to take young children, because there is place for them to play on the lawn, without overly disrupting other diners.

The service was very pleasant, though I did notice that the adjacent table was having trouble communicating a request.

Nevertheless, I’d still recommend that if you’re in the area that you give Rijks Restaurant a try, at least once.

Stayed two nights in one of the family cottages - modern and very nicely kitted out, AC in living room - we needed it, it was particularly hot during our stay. Lovely places for a family stay with grounds for kids to run around and tree swings to keep them busy. The hotel is set in beautiful peaceful gardens, with a swimming pool area and terrace restaurant. Set against stunning backdrop of mountains. Winery is next door but not associated with the hotel.
If I was being super critical we felt that there was a lack of attention to detail in the restaurant, we waited over 45 mins (with hungry kids) for cooked breakfast and no one seemed to notice or explain why/offer an apology. Management were around but didn't seem too focused on customers. Overall a lovely stay and nice change of pace from Cape Town.

We stayed one night to attend a wedding in the area, and upon arrival our many requests had been expertly dealt with, our cottage was nice and cool (they had the aircon on prior to our arrival), and the place was extremely neat and tidy.

The pool was good, the service excellent and when we woke up in the morning, our car was even washed!!

Definitely worth it, and will only stay there in the future if in the Tulbagh region.

We had the most wonderful, serene and romantic stay Rijk's Country House. The setting is sublime and the staff, especially Freda, are incredibly welcoming and helpful. Our room was spacious and clean and the breakfast was superb too. We will definitely be back!
