We stayed at Rijk's a couple of weeks ago for 2 nights. Our room had a lovely view of the vineyards. The room is lovely & large, bathroom was fantastic with enough space for toiletries and a separate toilet. The weather was hot as hell (44 degrees at 3pm) so we were very grateful for the aircon! The safe in the room didn't work and the local locksmith didn't deliver before we left. The pool was a little murky although very refreshing considering the air temperature. Rooms can do with a Nespresso machine.
Service can improve though. At breakfast I ordered the ciabatta with scrambled eggs. The eggs were perfectly cooked but were placed on an old hamburger bun that they tried to disguise by toasting it hard. When I complained the manager started making excuses about how scarce ciabatta is in Tulbagh, Perhaps inform the diners or take it off the menu? The rest of the cooked breakfasts were extremely good. There was a charge for latte which we don't understand why. And the coffee was so-so - refer to Nespresso comment above.
We booked dinner at the restaurant and requested that they open a specific bottle of wine for us at 18:30. This was not done and then the same manager who made the ciabatta excuses tried to lie his way out of the situation by saying that they never open wine more than half an hour before diners arrive and that we arrived half an hour early and that is why the wine wasn't opened. The waitress informed us that the day staff never conveyed the message and that, even had we arrived 2 hours later, the wine would still not have been opened. Honesty would have been appreciated rather. Her service was fantastic to say the least: honest, enthusiastic with a sense of humour!
Our dinner was great but the ribs were dry as bone although full of flavour. When we requested a replacement they had run out of "the sauce". They serve fantastic bread with their dinner too - they bake it freshly every afternoon at 3pm, but it's so good that there's never enough left for breakfast the next morning...pity.
When we left, we were surprised to find someone washing our rental car. When inquiring why (from the ciabatta manager), he informed us that they can't have anyone leave their hotel with a dirty car, so it's part of the service. Nice touch!
