Fantastic place to eat, staff lovely and friendly. Very good value and excellent food. The train runs at the side of the restaurant but we never saw it, in fact we never saw a train all the time we were in New Zealand. Advisable to book, as there are not many decent places to eat around here.

“The Unknown unknowns”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 31, 2014

If I may borrow the phrase from Donald Rumsfeld. This is one of my pet hates: a restaurant (or any other establishment) displays the Visa / MasterCard logos at its property and on its menu. Uses a leather Visa wallet to present the bill, and only then are you told that there will be a 2.26% charge for using a credit card!! I have nothing against charging additional percentage for the use of credit cards, but only when they announce it upfront BEFORE entering into a contract ordering and consuming food!

When I questioned the waiting person about the charge, she said that it only added $3 to the bill. An unbelievable retort! I could equally say to the restaurant that “it is only $3”: three-bucks and an evening spoiled!

Why is the restaurant not upfront with the charge: these unknown unknowns for the punter? Perhaps they fear loosing punters before there is a contract to pay for the meal…

The kitchen produces really nice food. It is a great shame that it is not supported by equally good management.

“What a jem !”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 31, 2014

You will not be disappointed with a meal at The Station, our first meal was so good we booked again for the second night. Warm and cosy, exceptional Chef and attentive waitress, good sized portions of absolutely great food. We'd been waiting for a Venison meal and this was it, top class. Second night, the steak was one of the best I've ever had. Desert - delicious! Don't forget to book.

“Great place for a nice meal”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 26, 2014

This place, at the end of the road, which our son jokingly said must pay people to stand and wait for the trains, is a place where the owners attend to their guest with care and great hospitality. while not one of the best meals we have ever had, it is certainly the best in this region that we tried and we would recommend it heartily. Comfortable room, fresh and well prepared food, service with a smile all around a pleasant and welcoming surprise .. Bart

“Cosy and welcoming”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 24, 2014 via mobile

As is the case throughout NZ, the welcome was warm and the kumeru (NZs native potato) soup was very nice. If you get off the train here and have some time between appointments, I can recommend spending it here. They close at 3pm, however.
