Howards Mountain Lodge

We found the staff to be very friendly and the motel to have excellent facilities especially the huge kitchen and lounge. Our room was clean with lots of space. This was perfect for our family on a budget.

New Zealanders seem very keen on the word 'deluxe'. We took the 'Deluxe Xing Package' it was basic not deluxe. A few insect screens would help keep the insects out.
Kitchen was very good and underused by other guests

Howard's Lodge is super clean and has great common areas for everyone to hang out in. Staff was very helpful about how to get to the Tongarirro Crossing and filled us in on a rain forest hike which was only a ten minute walk from the hostel.

Family groups of us came down from Hamilton. Easy to get to ski field, hiring gear here is cheaper than on the mountain! The staff we dealt with were super friendly and nice and knew what they were talking about when fitting gear. Rooms were adequate and warm. Only negative thing I can say is that there weren't quite enough toilets/showers and that they are uni-sex (some other guests failed to shut the door while in use!). I would stay here again though.

Just did the Alpine Crossing 2 days after the doomsday. Nice lodge, convenient location from the intercity bus station (2 mins walk). Cosy and clean rooms and bathrooms. Took a standard package including 2 nights of accomodation, 2 days of breakfast and packed lunch during Alpine crossing. Really hassle free as there's shuttle to transport you to and from the crossing. Very helpful staff and up to date regarding the crossing's weather and helped you to book a restaurant The Lounge is really cool and can imagine it will be a lovely place to relax after skiing (I went there in summer).

well located, very good package offer for the crossing, clean little rooms, showers and toilets, very helpful staff at reception, cute and cozy sitting room. Didn't use the spa, although it is for free. Take two days and get the transport included in package, very easy for those without car.

Room Tip: doubles and twin on first floor small but nice, 3 and 4 bed dorms on ground floor a little small
