“Decent place for the money.”
Reviewed March 30, 2012

I quite liked the outward appearance of Howards Lodge. I found howards rooms very small, but clean, with reasonably comfortable beds. The bathrooms were clean where it mattered, but the floors could have done with a sweeping. The kitchen was clean enough and the location was quite convenient. I was happy enough with my stay, and the price was reasonable.

We stayed in a double room with shared facilities, while doing the Tongariro Crossing. Two nights, transport and lunch for the walk. The accommodation was very adequate, warm and clean, and the shared bathroom and lounge areas were modest but of good standard. The great selling point of the lodge was the staff, especially the receptionist who made our stay a wonderful experience. VERY helpful, cheerful, and informative. The drive to the walk and the pickup afterward could do with a bit of an overhaul, but we got there and the lunch provided was filling. We will definitely stay here again, because as the title of this review says, "the people make the place.

Room Tip: shared facilities are quite suitable for a small budget.

A last minute meant we stayed at Howards Lodge. Cost $120.00 for double en suite per night for 2 days with breakfast and bus transfers included. Our room was low budget and not what we were expecting however it was clean. The bed thin and uncomfortable at all and there was a wait of 15-20mins for hot water to shower. TV in rooms but picture too fuzzy to watch, walls paper thin and floor squeaked in hallway. Other accomodation in the area looked much the same although from the outside Howards is probably better. Over all Grant seemed cheerful and was helpful especially given the last minute change (thank you Grant) however the grumpy lady managing breakfast seemed reluctant help and didn’t even try to smile not even once - perhaps she is not a morning person.

Room Tip: If you want a good night sleep ask for a room away from families with screaming kids as the walls ve...

Grant here and you are most welcome. Sorry it wasn't as perfect as we would like but for the breakfast be assured that person has been beaten severely. For the shower I did discover once you pointed out the delay that someone had very kindly switched of the circulation pump for us ??? Now corrected.

We stayed in the ensuite accomodation and found it very clean and comfortable. The shared kitchen facilities were clean and well stocked with equipment compared to other places we have stayed. The tv room was also comfortable to sit and relax in after a days hiking.

We enjoyed our stay. Room was clean and comfortable. Good hot water. No TV but fair value for what we paid - $105 for double en suite. Friendly manager/receptionist. Kitchen and dining area was clean with all the cooking and eating equipment necessary. Room was also warm which was nice.

We stayed here two nights, before and after doing the crossing.
The room was basic in terms of facilities which was fine for us as we were hardly in it, and it was spotlessly clean.
The shared facilities; breakfast room, sitting area were functional for all we used them.
Grant organised our bus to and from the crossing which all worked out very well giving us just the right time for our walk. He also provided good advice about clothing, footwear, weather etc..
Grant also booked us in to the Station Cafe for our evening meal after completing the Crossing which meant we got free bubbles on arrival.
If you are looking for five star luxury go to the Chateau. If you want somewhere to kick off from before and after the crossing at a reasonable price this is just the job.

Room Tip: Our room was at the end of a corridor and was very quiet. If eating out, consider the Station Cafe...

I stayed in a twin room here with a travel friend so I cannot comment on the dorm rooms. The room was clean and the bathrooms were clean as well. They are co-ed and provided hot water after our chilly Tongariro Crossing hike. Just be aware that they take the shower curtains down at 9 even though check-out isn’t until 10, so if you plan on a morning shower, it must be before 9. The kitchen was of average size but got a bit crowded at dinner time. The thing is that many people are on the same schedule here because of the hikes, so most everyone wants to make meals at the same time.

They charge $30 for drop-off and pick-up at the beginning and end of the crossing, and give ample time to complete the hike before pick-up. I believe they also hire out various attire and equipment if you do not have something essential for the hike.

Thanks for staying with us recently and writing a review. Just wanted to assure you that the showers don't close (or actually close at all) at 9am. All shower curtains are bleached once a week and perhaps that day I can only assume we had an over-enthusiastic staff member regarding the time. My apologies and hope to see youhere again on your next trip.
