National Park Backpackers Hostel is located in the National Park Village, which is a small town nearest the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. If you are going to do the crossing, the hostel runs a daily shuttle service to the crossing and you can also rent out hiking gear (boots, jackets, poles, etc) from them at nominal rates. I rented hiking boots for $5 and got on their return shuttle bus for $28. They also have an indoor climbing hall and you can rent gear to climb the wall.

Stayed here for 3 nights in May 2011 and was in a 10 bed dorm. Felt that the room was big enough and surprisingly comfortable for 10 people, although there were not enough power outlets. The staff are helpful.

Reviewed April 4, 2010

We found it to be very run down and poorly serviced. If the owners would spend a bit of money on the place the experience would be greatly improved. At $70 per night for a room with an ensuite - which has a banana bed and only one chair I think it's a pretty expensive stay for what you get. There was snot on the wall above the vanity, pubic hair in the shower and no soap provided - I'm sure it doesn't cost much to include that one small but essential item and cleaning happens anyway so why not do it properly.

The kitchen was really badly laid out - which appeared to be stocked with utensils and crockery left behind by guests. There was one toaster (a disaster when everyone is in the kitchen trying to grab breakfast before the crossing bus leaves) and one cutlery tray - this creates an almost frenzy at times with people grabbing for the items and falling over each other because they have to keep crossing over to get things.
Seriously how hard is it to buy a few cultery trays and toasters and lay out some 'work areas'??
As they are also one of the main providers of transport for the tongariro crossing (at $30 a head) we felt they must be raking in the money but not spending any of it to improve their guests stay.
