“Absolutely fantastic!”
Reviewed August 27, 2011

After reading various reviews on Trip Advisor, I decided to book at Tongariro Crossing Lodge. I am very glad that I did as Colin was friendly and went the extra mile to make our stay lovely. I don't often write reviews but would love to send more people his way.

We stayed in the Whakapapa Room which was pleasantly decorated with a Victorian theme (and a brilliant mohair blanket). The heaters meant that we were able to keep the bedroom + sitting room toasty despite the Antarctic front moving up. Colin had already turned the heaters on to pre-warm it for us. He also opened up the adjoining unit so that we could use the kitchen (as there was noone staying there).

We had a really lovely stay and would definitely go back.

Colin and Jimmy (father and son) own and run this lodge and are wonderful hosts. The atmosphere is very casual, family-like, and the proprietors are just great. Jimmy did all sorts of research for us and presented us detailed maps and hand written suggestions for things to do based upon our timing and desires. He did this without us asking! They gave us free access to their computer for us to use the internet, and the breakfast was delicious. The room was comfortable, roomy, very nice. In summary, the stay was comfortable, warm, clean, casual, and well worth the price.

we stayed for 3 nights in the jeruselum room, which had a small shared kitchenette area with one other room. Comfortable stay and would recommend it to others.

We found this place by accident, just driving around the Tongariro National Park Village. It had "curb appeal" and this was borne out by the inside of the individual lodges. They were furnished to a high standard, very comfortable and cozy. We introduced ourselves to Captain the cat and got the seal of approval. It was very handy for the 5am start the next morning for the Tongariro crossing. We loved it.

Our reason for being there was to do the Tongariro Crossing and we were lucky that we had a beautiful day with wonderful views. On our return Jimmy gave my husband a Summit beer on the house which was a nice gesture and much appreciated. The decor is rather dated but the welcome is friendly and the view of the mountains as we sat in the garden took some beating

I have to say out of all the places i've stayed in NZ these guys are customer service number 1! Really genuine, nice people coupled with delightful accommodation. We were meeting up with family in town and these guys went out of their way to help us track them down. A big thanks for chasing after me with my takeaway lunch for the crossing that I would otherwise have left behind.
Well be back!!!

My experience for four days at Tongariro Crossing Lodge was excellent. My purpose was hiking but the weather was abysmal. Jimmy, the Lodge manager, and Colin and Annette went to great lengths to suggest other things for me to do. They made arrangements and printed out maps for me.

I used their wireless internet access free of charge as well as used guest's laundry facilities for free. The room was comfortable, clean and quiet. I had a double room but they lowered the price since I was alone. I got an unexpected discount for staying an extra night.

And the people at the Lodge are just great people. They are happy to chat and are knowledgeable about local culture, sports, politics, you name it. The atmosphere at the Lodge is genuinely friendly. I will definitely stay at Tongariro Crossing Lodge again if I ever get back to New Zealand.
