“Great value and friendly service!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 10, 2010

We were an extended family with friends and also 4 kids in the group. Our primary goal was the highly rated (and true!) Tongariro Alpine Crossing, at least a few of us, whilst the rest chilled out. The Mountain Heights Lodge provided us excellent value and great, friendly service. It was convenient to get to the start of the Alpine Crossing as well as back from it (finishes at a different location). The closest supermarket is at Turangi (approx 30-40mins away) so ensure that you bring all that you need. The tiny National Park Village has about 3 pub/restaurants, a liquor store and a minimart (part of the gas station) on offer (which is about 2 minutes drive away from the lodge). For a lodge located in the middle of a National Park, it provided us with everything that we needed and the friendly hosts let the kids feed and mess about with the Alpacas on site too. If you wanted to do the crossing I would highly recommend the Mountain Heights Lodge. During the ski season the run up to the Whakapapa ski fields would be so handy.

Four of us stayed in the B&B Lodge in 2 separate ensuite clean and comfortable rooms.
Our Hosts provided us with a great breakfast and also with helpful advice on places to go and paces to eat. Good suggestions even with wet weather.
We also spent time with them chatting by the cosy woodburner in the lounge.
We enjoyed that fact that this was a small cosy lodge with no blaring music etc.
This was 1 km or so from the village and because of the busy road you need to drive to the village rather than consider walking on the road!

This lodge/B&B was advertised in Lonely Planet as being "friendly," but our experience was just the opposite. Although the rooms were clean and comfortable (electric blankets, plenty of space), our hosts were unwelcoming and negative. The first night, they said they did not have enough food to give us a breakfast and disapproved of our plans to do the Tongariro Crossing hike using our own transportation (I imagine they get a percentage of the bus transportation fees which are quite steep). They also said the weather would be bad and that our kids were too young (weather and kids were both fine). The next day they would not let us have breakfast in the main dining room, saying it was only for the B&B customers, and that they "couldn't wait till all these city people left." Maybe they are just in the wrong business...?

  • Liked — The electric blankets.
  • Disliked — The hosts.
