There are not too many choices in this park for accommodations. We ended up booking here as it was the cheapest for 2 beds for a 1 night stay. The hosts were extremely knowledgeable about the crossing. We got a very early shuttle drop-off to get going on the Tongariro Crossing. The lodge feels rustic and old, but it was clean and quiet.

The stay at this lodge could have been a negative experience but wasn't. Staff made up for any misunderstandings in the booking.

I had made reservations on line and booked a shuttle for a certain time along with boxed breakfast and lunch for an all day hike. Their shuttle was being repaired so they arranged for another shuttle to pick us up at a time later than originally scheduled. Since we didn't need a boxed breakfast but would be leaving before their restaurant opened, we were given cereal, yogurt, fruit, etc so we could eat breakfast in our rooms before leaving and make lunch for the hike. This was important since the only store in the area was not near and would have been closed by the time we got there.

Also one of the rooms I had reserved was not available so that room was upgraded. We stayed in the small cabins which had 2 separate units and the upgrade stayed in a cabin by themselves which I would recommend if you are going to stay there. Those units are much roomier so we would meet our friends there for breakfast which we couldn't have done in our room.

The mix up was explained as a miscommunication between the on line staff and the regular staff.

After our all day hike we didn't feel like going into the park for dinner so we ate there and even though the meals had been frozen, they were delicious.

we stayed two nights in order to do the Tongariro crossing with a camper van. The whole lodge is a bit old but kept clean which is very imprtant to me. Also the shower facilities were kept clean several times a day. The hosts were very friendly and helpful. I can not say anything about the little huts which are there as well. The host offers several daily trips to get to and from the Tongariro Crossing, so if that's what you come for, this is the place to stay.

We stayed at Discovery Lodge with our 2 childeren, 5 and 7 years old. We loved it. We stayed in a studio motel which was warm and comfortable. There was a good size kitchen in the room which was great for making our own breaky. The restaurant had great tasting meals so mum could have a break too. The kids loved the guest lounge with free pool table and the in house movie theater. The staff was very friendly and went out of their way to accommodate us.
We enjoyed the bush environment and the mountain views which gave us the feeling that we were on a real break away from the hustle and bustle from the city. We can't wait to come back.

I stayed here in one of their one bedroom chalets with my wife and son with the intention of doing the Tongariro Crossing using their shuttle service. The chalet was tatty and unkempt and the kitchen area was inadequate with what crockery there was, being chipped and stained. At $200.00 per night this represented the worse value for money in all of our four trips to N.Z. For little more than this we could have stayed in luxury at Chateau Tongariro!
The biggest disappointment was that when my son and I went to reception at 7.00pm to book the shuttle for the following morning we were told by the young woman on reception that the shuttle would not be running as they were expecting high winds and that it would therefore be dangerous; this we accepted and opted to do some low level walks from Whakappa Village which we did. Later at the DOC information desk we were told there had not been a problem with the weather on the Crossing (only mist and rain in the morning), this was bourne out by us in the afternoon taking the chairlift and then climbing to the ridge on Mt.Raupehu. We felt let down by Discovery Lodge for after having expressed our desire to do the Crossing they did not advise us that the weather was in fact favouable and consequently run the shuttle.
