“A Great Welcome to an Historic Gem”
Reviewed October 21, 2013

Our first experience of Calcutts House was a warm welcome with coffee provided by host James and his faithful dog, whose name I have forgotten. We booked at the last minute, and so we had to take the James Glazebrook suite, which it has to be said, is rather small and provides a view of the sky! However it was exactly as advertised, and for £45, including a first rate breakfast, who's complaining? We don't spend much time looking out of our accommodation window when we're away anyway. The time was much better spent walking along the old railway track to Ironbridge or enjoying an evening in one of the local pubs nearby. There is just so much to explore in the local area and the people so welcoming, that a couple of days cannot do it justice. Can't wait to go back, and would certainly be happy to return to Calcutts.

Room Tip: Rooms in the main house are much bigger, but book early!

Ideally situated, quiet and charming, Calcutts House offers a very good bed and breakfast. I stayed in the spacious William Hazeldine room with its quaint French period furniture. Quaint however, does not mean practical in this case. The drawers were too small to put anything in and the bottom was falling out of the dressing table stool. Hanging space was in a rather strange cupboard. The shower room was fine, although the water pressure in the electric shower was poor. The toilet seat cover was off when I arrived but was restored the next day without me needing to comment. The entrance hall needs decorating and smells a bit doggy and however sweet the dog is, he's smelly and should be kept out of the dining room with more conviction.

Breakfast was good, especially the fruit salad, and James was an excellent and friendly host. I would stay here when in the area.

A charming old house built in 1690 and living history. The Lord Dundonald room with it's huge 4 poster bed was spotless and the adjoiniing en-suite bathroom is modern and excellent. Our host James welcomed us with a tray of tea and coffee - a welcome break after a long drive. Breakfast was excellent - a wide range of cereals and porridge plus fresh fruits and a superb full English breakfast. Ironbridge and its famous bridge are a short walk from Calcutts House. The nearby Black Swan pub provided an excellent meal.

This very comfortable B and B was totally relevant for me. Excellent and obliging hosts who delivered a superb English breakfast. The William Reynolds room was fine for me but without outlook. Was excellent value and a bonus was the proximity to a wonderful local pub that had excellent pub grub. A great spot. One minor suggestion though - would be good to be able to check in earlier than 4.30pm as when you are travelling getting settled and showered is nice before that time.
What an absolutely delightful part of the world and a history buffs paradise.
I highly recommend this B and B.

My wife, 2 kids (15 and 13), and I stayed here for 2 nights in late June 2013. We found Calcutts to be very pleasant. The rooms were spacious and clean. The rooms are distinctive and each have their own distinctive quirks and advantages. We stayed in the Dundonald room which has "the largest bed in Jackfield." Our kids stayed in different rooms each night.

Calcutts itself is enjoyable. As well, it is a great location for staying Ironbridge. It's close to all the major sites and a relatively short walk to the Bridge. The staff was friendly and helpful. The breakfast was good. Overall, Calcutts was a great value. I would highly recommend it.

On a side note, we needed 2 rooms for 2 nights and couldn't book online. It turned out that we couldn't get a 2nd room for 2 consecutive nights. I called and the staff quickly worked it out for us to get Dundonald for 2 nights and then 2 different rooms for my kids. I figured my kids could move their suitcases and, unsurprisingly, they could. Bottom line, everyone was flexible and we were able to get what we needed.

I'm sure if you stay there, you will be pleased.

Room Tip: The Dundonald room has the largest bed in Jackfield, allegedly. Even if it's not, it's still...

We stayed at Calcutts house for one night as we were attending a wedding reception at Enginuity, Coalbrookdale. We booked the B&B due to price and tripadviser reviews. On arrival we were welcomed with a tray of tea and coffee on the patio, really good tea and coffee too. We had the William Reynolds room in the Coach House which was really lovely, light, airy and with a very comfortable bed. Despite warnings about head height my 6ft 3 husband was more than comfortable and we experienced no issues. We had a great night's sleep and woke to a fantastic breakfast, seriously lovely, fresh fruit salad was just glorious and the toast, veggie sausage, mushrooms and tomatoes for me, sausage bacon and poached eggs for husband were great, really good quality sausage and bacon. The service was attentive but not intrusive, James and his wife make a real effort to remember ones name, and the breakfast room was really pretty and welcoming. We enjoyed watching the birds feeding outside the window, including a magnificent Jay who landed for a while. It is around a 15-20 minute walk to Ironbridge I would imagine, for reference we used Diamond cars of telford who charged us £4.10 early evening for double that journey to the museum which is very reasonable compared to firms local to us and even at time and a half prices later in the evening they charged only £6.20. So, if you are slightly less able to manage a walk of a mile or two but wishing to stay in Ironbridge i thoroughly recommend Calcutts House based on proximity and the affordability of a cab into Ironbridge and its museums slightly beyond the bridge itself. Overall a fantastic stay, My husband and I are both looking forward to coming back for a weekend away hopefully in the near future. I am a very happy and relaxed lady today and husband feels really well rested too.

A great welcome [hot coffee and a welcoming host] followed by a whole weekend of perfect hosting and awesome breakfasts.

The property is an amazing place to stay with excellent views over the valley and centrally placed for all of the Ironbridge sites.

Some excellent pubs locally serving good grub and all accessible on foot.

Our sincere thanks to Sarah and James - it was 'groovy' and we will return.
