“an experience not to be missed”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 4, 2007

Have returned from a trip to the Ice Hotel. Stayed 3 nights in Kiruna and 1 night at the ice hotel. This was all booked through Kiruna Guide tour, who were excellent. Trips were taken whilst in Kiruna and they were very good, on some trips there were only ourselves and the others just one other couple. Collected from our hotel and brought back again.
The ice hotel was fantastic, although if you are staying in the cold accomodation there is no where to go and relax, until you go to bed, they do need some sort of lounge and would be nice if the showers were nearer - you have to go across the road for them. But still would not have missed the experience. We were not cold at all. Staff advice you to have thermals, pyjamas, socks and a hat to sleep in. Its best not to take anything else into your ice room, but to leave it all in the luggage store.
We couldnt have asked for a better holiday - no sun tan but at least because of layers of clothes we were not cold, and have done something most people only dream about.

Visited the Ice Hotel in Sweden following on from a few days whale watching in Norway. The hotel is absolutely amazing - built completely from ice and maintained at -5 C. We stayed in a standard room, which consists of a bed made from ice and a shelf, but you don't need anything else in the room. The bed is covered in fur skins and you are given a thermal sleeping bag which you can zip right up to completely enclose you - personally I felt a little too claustrophobic covering my face, so left it slighly unzipped which worked fine for me. Managed to get a reasonable night's sleep and was awoken in the morning with hot berry juice which went down really well. The second night was spent in a lodge and it was great to be able to take off all the layers to go to bed! There are lots of excursions, we did the snowmobil, reindeer experience and then got a husky sleigh to the airport on our last day. Recommend all of these. It's quite expensive there, but worth every penny!!

We spent a night in the cold accomodation, and were lucky to be given one of 2 enormeous family rooms, situated by the suites. It had room for at least 6 people on the bed, and its own walk-in changing/storage room (other family and standard rooms have communal changing areas with a locker).

The whole idea of a hotel made entirely of ice is so crazy that it just has to be experienced - and it looks stunning, particularly with the creative lighting.

For the price, though, I do agree with other reviewers that facilities should be upgraded. It does feel strange walking around complete strangers in your underwear, thermal or not. It's really just a basic youth hostel set up. Each ice room should have its own changing/storage room with private ensuite shower and loo - particularly considering the price.

Make sure you book activities in advance, as there's nowhere to go during the day. And don't expect to spend any time in your room (or suite) - you rush in, tuck up in your sleeping bag, and it's lights out (if you can find the switch - we couldn't and had to run back to the reception to ask).

The Icebar was good fun, even though my 9 year old kept dropping his drink - it's not easy holding on to an ice glass with huge mittens on!

The bartender at the 'warm bar' underneath the restaurant (only place to warm up!) makes a better mojito than in Cuba - honest!

The food was very good - though not quite up to the standard at Ripan Resort in nearby Kiruna, and it cost at lot more.

Despite all the gripes, it's still an experience to be treasured.

After our flight from Tromso been cancelled due to the snow we went on a hair raising 6 hour mini bus trip over bear mountain with 7 swedish psychiatric nurses to eventually made it to the Ice Hotel at 1am. A receptionist who was obviously not very happy to be on the night shift pointed us on our way to the reception of the ice hotel. One of the strangest moments of my life was walking into this reception to be met by 30 drunk germans on a corporate stay (one of which set his hat on fire by placing it on the numerous candles). We were given very brief instructions by someone on a youth training scheme which was basically, "go to the curtain over there, strip to your long johns and come back for a sleeping bag" which we did much to the amusement of the germans.

Having said all this the Ice Hotel is amazing. The sculptures are beautiful and breathtaking and this was one of the best experiences I've ever had. It is cold, but the sleeping bags they give you are warm. Unfortunately every time my face hit the cold air outside I woke up and so did my partner. We spent the next day looking around all the rooms before the multitude of day tourists arrived and taking lots of photos.

The day staff were certainly more pleasant and up to speed than the night staff. The breakfast and lunch was excellent and there is free coffee and biscuits throughout the day for people who stay the night.

There are only a few toilets so make sure you go before you go to bed and we didn't bother showering the next day as we couldn't find them. We reckoned we probably didn't smell and if we did we'd blame someone else. On the whole this was a good experience. Not too sure I'd do it again though.

We had 4 nights in Swedish Lapland. We stayed 2 nights at the Ice Hotel - one night in an ice room and one in a nordic cabin. The ice suites and carvings were amazing and the ice bar great fun. We kept our ice glasses in our ice room to use after our meal! We also spent 2 nights in the Scandic Ferrum in Kiruna itself. We booked our trips thru Kiruna Guide Tours (via their website) - snow-mobiling and dog sleds - who were really friendly and helpful. We also did the reindeer tour and the snow shoe hike booked thru the Ice Hotel. The snow shoe tour was great - we walked for about half an hour up a nearby hill, where we got high pretty quickly and had a great view.
My kids (ages 9 & 12) had a great time and loved playing in the snow and using the kick sleds that are all over the site to be borrowed.
We all slept the night in the cold room, though the 2am dash to the loo wasn't great! The info tour about how to sleep was good - tips like take a fleece into your sleeping bag with you then you have something warm to put on when you get out!
The Ice Hotel is very well set up and run - especially considering the number of guests they have. We were able to check in to our warm accomodation before the advertised 3pm (about 12.15, I think) - they seem to turn the rooms around very quickly. With 4 of us, our lockers were very full, so I asked if I could use a spare one and it was no problem. In the locker room, there are even small lockers by plugs where you can charge camera batteries/phones. You lock your item inside and plug it in outside - there is a little notch in the door so the wire doesn't get squashed.
Our one gripe about the nordic cabin was that there was no guard rail on the top bunk in the kids room (we put the mattress on the floor).
We flew to Kiruna and caught the overnight train back. I wouldn't use the train unless your budget is very tight as it was 2 hours late, and the toilets were few and far between!
Apart from that, it was a fantastic experience. If you are thinking about going, just do it - it is a once in a lifetime experience!
My tips would be to take your own balaclava - they stop the breath freezing in your nose! - and you can wear them under a hat. Also it helps to know your shoe size in European measurements as they loan you boots.

  • Liked — The amazing ice sculptures, the views, the snow, the ice bar, the activities, the feeling of space outside
  • Disliked — the small lockers and crowded locker room

I stayed 3 nights at the Ice Hotel with my husband and kids , 15 & 11. We had one night in the Ice Suites and 2 nights in the warm accomodation. On the advice of a previous reviewer , I booked the warm room as a 'back up' for the night of our stay in the cold accomodation which turned out ot be a real plus. One of our children was ill when we arrived and the hotel allowed us to re-schedule our Ice Room stay until the following night - luckily we had booked the warm room in any event as they were fully booked during our stay so I'm not sure where we would have slept that first night without it ! - interestingly, there was still availability in the cold accomodation. Our circumstances were unfortunate and I'm not suggesting you should book the back up room purely incase someone is ill - there are other benefits. We had been up since @ 3am and arrived at the hotel @ 4pm. If we were staying in the Ice Room that night , there is nowhere for you to relax until bedtime. You can go to your cold room from 6pm onwards but realistically , you are not going to head for bed at that hour and it's not the sort of place you just sit around in , given the temperatures. There are no cosy bars or lounges in the main part of the hotel but at least if you have the back up room , you can relax there on arrival and freshen up before dinner. Also , you avoid that fight for the communal showers and toilets in the morning as you just pop straight back to your warm room - otherwise I think you have to wait until that afternoon to get your room key if you are staying in the warm accomodation the next night. You also avoid the hassle of having to keep your luggage in storage whilst you are in the Ice Room. I know it's extra expense but this is not a cheap break and in the grand scheme of things , it was well worth it for us as a family , given the benefits.

As for our stay generally ,even given the illness we had a great time. My husband went on the Saab ice-driving experience which he said was huge fun. We tried the huskey trip from the airport and a couple of snowmobiling trips. We had endless fun rolling in the snow with the kids. The food in the Ice Restaurant was good - particluarly the evening meals. I thought the staff were excellent - very efficient . All in all, a great experience.

I booked this trip over a year ago so expectations were high and I am pleased to say they were met. All the staff were helpful and friendly and when I went to view the suite we were allocated and I realised there was no way I could get on the bed they quickly swopped to another one. OK there should be more toilets and yes it is along way to the showers but it is a small inconveniance for all the other benefits of this great place. We booked our trips with local agents through a small company called TravelBee in the UK and we dont know how she did it for the price as Ice Hotel trips are really expensive. The buffet lunch at £10 for all you wanted was excellent value and one of the best meals we had. I slept really well and had to be woken up in the morning which really surprised me. Go with an open mind, dont worry if you dont shower for 1 day and if you need the loo in the night wrap the sleeping bag around you and enjoy the whole ambience of snow and ice
