We took the plunge and decided to opt for a differnet kind of wedding at the Ice hotel, Sweden.

It was everything we imagined and more, the hotel accommodation both warm and cold was excellent, we couldnt fault it. We had a chalet near the ice hotel/church, it was a 2 bed chalet with plenty of space for us and all our wedding luggage !

The ice church was spectacular, we were worried that we would be cold but the adrenaline took over and we didnt feel cold until about half an hour after the ceremony when the photos were being taken. Eva was very helpful and on hand when you needed her, you have to remember though they are a little more laid back than us brits !!!

The food was great but its mainly Moose or Reindeer on the menu :) Dont be shocked by the price of the drinks as they are mega expensive, but I think you prepare yourself for that before you go. Our bar bill was about £1000 for 4 days (inc wine for the wedding breakfast!)

Definately would recommend the skidoo's and husky rides, we had a fab time and the guides were really friendly and worth the money! I would suggest going through Guidetours and not the hotel as the hotel overcharge big time !!

I went there not knowing what to expect it was expensive, but a marvelous holiday with the wow factor included we went husky sledging and snow mobiling and would have liked to have been there longer to try more things. The restaurant food was first class and the staff of the hotel went out of their way to be helpful. The cost of everything was expensive but take into account various factors the cost of living in Sweden and Norway is very high and a coffee or soft drink in Stockholm, Bergen or Oslo will cost about £4- £5 (UK) in the Ice Hotel the price is £5-£6. I survived the cold room which was if all instructions met with not so cold even though the temperature was -5C, -24C outside and the warm rooms ie the Kaamos rooms where we stayed were really luxurious. loved the place and the unique thing is next year there will be a new hotel all different if you want a repeat. Knowing you will never stay in the same room again as it will melt also gives it the unique factor. There is also a Sami museum and culture center and a lovely little Sami church well worth the visit at the end of the road. Whilst there there is also an ice chapel and we witnessed countless weddings taking part it was a lovley place for the start of a new life. In summer it has a lease of life with summer orientated activities

Flew out to the Ice Hotel with Discover the World, who were well organised and managed to get all our excursions sorted easily too. The hotel isn't far from Kiruna airport and the flights arrived at a reasonable hour.

We spent out first night in the 'cold' accommodation. We booked an art suite, more expensive, but it meant we got a small changing room to ourselves rather than having to use the communal changing room and try to squeeze everything into a locker. The room doesn't have anything in it apart from a bench, but you can leave your stuff in it. The art suites also have more character than the basic snow rooms.

The hotel has two restaurants - one across the road that does breakfast, lunch & dinner, and the other down the road which does dinner only. It is only a ten minute walk away and the food at both restaurants was very good. Lots of fish!

Outside temperature for us was -30deg. We found that all our thermals plus the suit that the Ice Hotel gives you were perfect and kept us nice & warm. I can highly recommend M&S thermal underwear!! At about 9pm we wandered down to the river and looked for the Northern Lights - you can get a really good view from there.

Our night on the ice was brilliant - they even warm the sleeping bag up for you beforehand! For you girlies out there who are always cold like me, I wore fluffy bed socks, thermal leggings and a thermal long sleeve top - this was enough to keep me toasty. Had a great night's sleep.

When you get woken up with the hot juice in the morning, everyone seemed to rush for the showers. We went for breakfast first and then went for a sauna/shower. This worked a lot better as there were less people in the showers. They have an ice sauna rather than a plunge pool - go and sit in the igloo for 5 minutes to cool down! Again for the girlies - plenty of towels and hair dryers in the shower/sauna room, though don't expect a nice private shower!

There is a bit of a delay between checking out of the cold accommodation and into the warm rooms, but there is a luggage room to leave your bags in. We booked up excursions in between to keep us busy.

I can recommend:
- Husky sledging
- Reindeer sledging
- Snowmobile at night
- Horse ride at night

Some of the excursions have food included - if you are vegetarian, tell them beforehand as they don't bring an alternative to meat unless you ask. You'll be given reindeer, elk or moose meat - lovely food, but all meat based.

Can highly recommend the whole experience. The clothes the Ice Hotel give you are good, but you will need thermals to go under them. Wrap up even more if you go out on the snowmobile as the wind chill can get to you. Wander down to the river too - see the ice scupltures on the back wall of the Ice Hotel and look out for the Northern LIghts. Make sure you try the Ice Bar out - they do hot drinks too if you want them! Oh, and make sure you have plenty of money set by to pay for excursions, meals and any souvenirs. The gift shop is pretty expensive.

The Hotel was even more that we expected. It is best for short stays, let's say one night, because it is quite uncomfortable due to the fact that you cannot stay in your room for the whole time of the permanence. Entire hotel is on showcase whole day to groups of tourists, so you have to keep your stuff locked in the closets.

The art is fantastic and the food in the nearby restaurant was great. Take the local mean of transport to get there. Eat moose.

This was the best holiday my partner and I have or ever will go on!!! Everything was amazing, the snow was like nothing I have ever seen before. Sleeping in minus 5 was an experience, I would suggest to get an Ice Room though, they look nicer and you get a locker room instead of just a locker to put your bags in. This was in no way a cheap holiday, but I recommed that you do as many activities as you can, especially the snow mobiles, dog sledding and reindeers. Food is very expensive also! I would love to go back next year (if we can afford it). Such a fun and romantic place. The warm rooms were lovely, everything you needed. We slept in the warm rooms for 2 nights and the cold for 1. We went with discover the world, which was good, but added to the price, i think you could easily book it yourselves, which is what we will be doing next year!!

The most amazing holiday ever
Not cheap but worth every penny
Ensure you have thermals and warm socks, and a good pair of ski gloves also helps, the rest they wll give you
Book tours through kiruna guidtour - half the price - smaller groups and individualised service. Book as many tours as you can afford and try do ones with meals. We did the moose safari on snowmobile - the most fun i have with (lots) of clothes on, and the husky norther lights tour (sometimes the dogs dont listen and we all fell into the snow, about half a meter deep and disapeared, but added to the fun).
We had dinner one night at the homestead - a good 15 minute walk from the hotel, but we made ice angels on the way back. Food was very good - we found all the food in Sweden very good - i think it was because we were cold and hungry
A definite once in a lifetime experience - one of the funnier experiences for me was seeing a supermodel lookalike cleaning the toilets.
Enjoy the drinks in the icebar - you will probably only be there once in your lifetime. Sleep only in your thermals and run like crazy when you need the loo in the middle of the night

First things first the good things - the experience of staying overnight in a room in the Ice Hotel is amazing - my husband and I booked an Ice Suite which was great - and the added bonus is that you also get a little room for your cases rather than having to squeeze everything into a little locker. The food in both restaurants is excellent (although very expensive).

But.....the overall experience was disappointing. The reception staff were very unhelpful - when we tried to book into the main restaurant for the 2nd night we were told that a party of 200 had booked the entire place (no prior notice when we checked in). The breakfast menu is also is poor - we had a much better breakfast at the Hotel Eden in Kiruna the night before).

We complained when we checked out about a number of issues we'd had - and the manager drove us to the Homestead for a coffee which was very nice. However, despite promising us an e-mail by way of follow-up we haven't received anything - disappointing.

Some tips:-
Pre-book your evening meals before you arrive
Go for a late dinner booking when you stay in the Ice Hotel (so you are not hanging around too long before you go to bed
Take some nibbles with you - although there is a shop about a 5 minute walk away it is expensive as well
Be prepared for a no-frills experience despite the prices
