“Best value for money in caribbean”
Reviewed November 13, 2010

Been back two weeks now and i dont always write a review but this was such a good holiday , i thought i must make the time
Flight out withThomas cook was fine paid extra for premium economy was it worth the extra cost no, you get on the plane and served first, and drinks are free but i would go economy next time and save the £300 as very little in seat quality
On the way back premium seat holders were not seated first i thought this is what we had paid extra for
Food both ways was as good as i have had on any airline ,except for the breakfast just before we landed

FLIGHT ENTERTAINMENT is poor on a loop so cant start film when you want like most long haul airlines TC you need to upgrade your system, last year went Virgin brilliant entertainment.
Holiguin airport took ages to get through immigration
Coach air conditioned on way to hotel takes a hour got our restaurant bookings on coach
but not our room number as some have written

Rooms
Are as every one as written clean but dated our six foot bed was very comfy water in fridge every day and always hot water ,
our first room had a problem with the air conditioning we spoke to reception and was moved straight away given a choice of two rooms, this hotel will do anything for you

Resort beach is just the best we have seen in the holidays we have so far taken to the caribbean plenty of cover white sand and warm seas , but the plastic beach chairs are so hard very few fabric ones .and this is the only resort we have been to where you can not take the Hobie cats out yourself even if you are experianced like myself but i do understand why, the guy was telling me there were getting thousands of pounds worth of damage a year from in experianced people unless you are a good swimmer snorkeling close in poor need to get to reef top end by other hotel best

Food
Alot has been written about the food here all i will say is with selection on offer if you cant find something to your liking then you never will, most morning and nights i went for fresh food cooked in front on me never a long wait the fresh cooked tiger prawns were to die for as were the kebabs
The French Restaurant was the best and we managed to get in three times just go to Luna side in mornings and asked if any free slots or ask at restaurant early evening

Pizza at snack bar luna side for lunch are cooked fresh and very good as are the burgers in the beach snack bars very handy if you dont want to come of beach, the beach hut has loads of books if you want to swap

Bars and bar area can get busy at night espeacially if it rains as it pushes every one under cover and we had a lot of storms coming in early evening magnificent ones with loads of thunder and lighting if Mares side busy we went over to luna side

Evening Entertainment was either very good or average ,acrobats were brillant ,rock band good as was water ballet do not waste you time with fashion show boring
I found the entertainment during the day the poorest i have seen on all the holidays i have taken during the last seven years this is a personell thing but i do like some of the silly things that a good entertainment team can orgaise during the day its a laugh and it breaks the day up, here its volley ball or bust and archery area very poor
It is a big hotel but entertainment staff should entertain and organise

Trips
Did the dolphin and evening dinner trip this was brilliant evening even allowing for the tropical storm that we had whilst there, i went in with just two other people with the trainee dolphins much more hands on. we got soaked watching the show but so what
The meal was excellant had a whole lobster which was cooked just right and the entertainment was a good laugh even got my wife up african dancing thats a miracle in it self

Cuba Life was a half day trip and for 39 cup was excellant value saw how the cubans live
went to villages and ration shop and plantion where we ate sugar cane and saw many tropical fruits and then on to indian village where you see a show which was good fun then had basic lunch with drink , across the road is a ancient burial site that predates Columbus only discovered a few years ago very intresting

Speed boats also reasonably priced as it was calm we went out to sea which ment you can really throw them around great fun and safe

Staff
I found it made no differance if you tipped or not we did occasionly but only because of the service we got, the staff treat you like old friends

Illness alot has been written about upset stomachs and for the first time ever my wife suffered from it this year at this resort i was find , we tried to analyse what was causing the problem its not food posioning was not ill in that way we think it was the milk for what ever reason it did not agree with her not sure if its fresh or long life .

Summerise
This was the best value for money holiday we have ever taken, paid more than twice the amount to go to St Lucia last year yes its more tropical inland but the food and beach did not match this hotel could have gone to Sol rio de luna twice for what we paid lesson learned, you dont always get twice as good for twice the cost
Although we had a great time one thing i did learn was that we do prefer the smaller Hotel feel that we have experised over the last few years so will probally go back to that type next year although i must say the hotel never ever felt packed and crowded
Thank you Sol Rio de Luna Mares for agreat fortnight

Hello to all Trip Advisor readers,

It's been the 7th time that I have the pleasure of going to Sol Rio de Luna y Mares and I cannot wait to go back. When someone stays at SRLM they feel like they are at a second home. All of the resort staff gives personal attention and makes sure that their guests' stay is a memorable one.I would like to send a special thanks to Alexis who is the first person I met at the resort the first time I stayed there and who I got attached to because he is a very special person. He will always make sure that everything is fine with the guests and that they enjoy their holiday. Also, a special thanks to customer service who is always there for you. Their door is always open to any questions or suggestions.
Thank you Wendy, Cecilia, Lily, Juan Carlos and everyone else.

My Parents and I went for 2 weeks from Oct 16 to Oct 30. My parents who are 80 and 75 years old enjoyed their stay and were feeling very safe to be at this resort. The food is very good and you get lots of choice at the buffet. Their a la carte restaurants are outstanding and a menu that will please everyone is offered. The best is the new french restaurant. Nobody should miss their chance at this one.. I name it a 5 star restaurant with a french atmosphere that is very relaxing. Romantico restaurant on the beach is also very exceptional and the international is also quite good.

The beach is definitely a 5 star and the whole staff is absolutely amazing. You can go see Campo to book the water activities and change your beach towel, he will be happy to see you with a nice smile (Also, he makes the best smoothies at the buffet in the morning, try the guava one!).

My daughter came to surprise me the second week and all the staff took care of arranging the details for when she arrived at the hotel. From the room close to mine, the surprise the everything. It was an amazing surprise and really managed to do something special so we could remember the special moment.
Tks to all of you and my special friend Alexis that have helped my dream come true.

The staff at this hotel is always ready to make sure you have a dream vacation. They are very caring and professional.

When you go, you will feel magic in your vacation. Why? Not because of the most modern looking rooms (because they are not, although they are very clean) but because of all the wonderful people who work there . They are just the BEST! Try it out and you will see!

This time I met a new person who is very special to me and his name is Henry. He was part of the animation team. I hope I will see him again in my next trip because I saw how good he is with the entertaining team and he did a very good job making sure Kids and adults had fun without leaving anyone out. He played all kinds of games and everyone enjoyed to have him around. He has a very strong customer service skills and he is very pleasant to be with.
We will miss you till our next trip.

Also big tks to the rest of the entertaining team Tony, Junior, Manuel, Sandra, the DJ and everyone else who did a great job making sure that people had lots of fun. They work very hard and always with a big smile.

I got to see 2 couples getting married at the resort during my stay and it was so wonderful. The 2 couples were very happy and enjoyed all the arrangements that were done for them. I am sure they will never forget
their special day and honeymoon there.

We met a lot of families there who become our friends now and they also agree that this hotel is a very nice place to relax and have fun.
This place is good for families, couple or group of friends.

If you have a special occasion to celebrate, then don't hesitate to inform the customer service who will be happy to do a special memorable day for you in your honour.

I have been to other hotels in Cuba and Dominican Republic but nothing compares to this hotel. I hope to go back soon.

Many of my friends and family keep returning to this hotel and once you go, you will want to go back again.

- A loyal SRLM client

Just returned from two weeks in this lovely, friendly resort. The staff couldnt do enough for us and never expected a tip. The Colon buffet is one of the best I have tried, with chicken, steak and seafood cooked fresh by the chef in front of you. Make sure you get pancakes from the pudding counter cooked in honey and rum - delicious! Always lots of choice. The A La Cart restaurants were also very good and i would recommend the international restaurant serving Lobster.
they have a nice spa there with sauna, steam and jaquzzi and plunge pool. they offer massages and the gym is not too bad considering the equipment is a bit ancient!
Nightime entertainment is not bad - the acrobats were pretty amazing and the beach disco is worth a try one night but only if you've had a few pina coladas!
Beach is beautiful and kept very clean - ignore others comments regarding it being dirty and full of fag butts - I didnt see even one! We made use of the free watersports and went on the hobie cats. due to the wind you cannot go by yourself but the guys take you out really far and you see flying fish. also saw a small tiger shark.
the hotel rooms are very basic but cleaned everyday and we had a lovely view of the pool and beach despite only booking a standard garden view room. The enterainment team are a great bunch and worked hard to enterain us when hurricane tomas hit and forced us to sit in the lobby for a few hours!
We booked with Thomson but flew on First Choice airplane which was very old and a bit grubby. The choice of films was dreadful and we had to pay £5 each way to upgrade to get a better film choice. When on the transfer bus we were given room keys, arm tags and info so when we got to the hotel we just went straight to our rooms which saved a lot of time. Thomson reps in the hotel were extremley helpful, expecially when we wanted to cancel our trip to Havana due to the plane crash - we got a full refund without questions. Dolphin trip is worth the money and take the open top bus to Guardalavaca which stops at the hotel every morning. there is a small market there to buy souviners which is a lot cheaper than the hotel stands. The cigars at the airport are also a lot cheaper than you can get in the hotel.
Overall a great holiday and worth every penny spet!

The hotel was brill very very clean staff were brilliant the staff on the luna side seemed more friendly though. But i think this is just because they are run off their feet in the mares side. There is lots to do and the beach is just a few steps down from the hotel. We got excellent service weather we tipped or not. Wendy the manager was 1st class she was amazing bent over backwards to make sure we enjoyed our stay. The french resturant was lovely the best i would say the italian was good i wasnt much for the one on the beach. The colon was ok lots to choose from but they do need to do something about the flies landing on all the food and also the temperature of the food but this would be easy to solve and in saying that none of us were ever ill. I would recommend the luna bar in the evenings very relaxing lovely staff the luna pool because we always got a bed, the trip to santiago amazing meal with it was abit bad though and watch out for the drinks we only had 3 colas and they charged us 6 cuc for them but when they offer them you assume its part of the meal.
You can get a horse and cart ride from outside the hotel for only 20 cuc they will take you to the flee market or for a veiw of the villages and farms its a long ride realy worth the money. We went twice with a man called Adelkey he has the yellow coach what a lovely man he shows you sides of cuba you will never see he talks you through everything and answers questions. We gave him most of our clothes and stuff when we left and asked him to give it to the people in his village as i know the hotel staff get plenty. Cuban people are the nicest people i have ever met they are proud people and very respectable so please treat them with the same respect. If you want to get into the resturants and you are not booked in just go down to the luna reception evey morning and ask them what they have most days you will get booked in for free and it is a nice change from the snack and collon bars.
Enjoy have fun i would go again :)

First I have to start by noting that we (my girlfriend and I) had a marvelous time at this resort. Staff was professional and NEVER asked for tips. Cuban people seem to be generally hard working and positive people. Food was good, many selections were fresh and cooked well. We never had ANY issues with the food. As soon as you get to the hotel, try to book a dinner at French and Italian restaurant. Beach was absolutely amazing. Rooms might need some renovation, but there were always spotlessly clean, all you need for a vacation. Excursions were wonderful. We took a half day trip with a jeep to a local village, that was a fantastic experience. The guide was very knowledgably. We also took a whole day trip on Catamaran, swim with dolphins, snorkeling...

Advice: bring any hygiene products, bathroom items, school supplies, for Cuban people. I would advise not to give them to a hotel stuff, they are wonderful but they are fortunate to receive gift on daily basis from guests. Save the tips and any presents you might bring for people outside the resorts. Poor but hard working farmers and their families.

Once again, the beach was superb! Weather in the last week of October was great, not humid, warm and sunny, perfect for swimming.

I have traveled all around the world, different countries and continents, similar types of resorts and vacations, and I cant hardly remember where the whole experience was more than marvelous like in Luna and Mares. Note that Mares is louder part of the hotel, nothing to bad. Everything gets completely quite after 11pm around both Mares and Luna. I heard that rooms in Luna parts were recently renovated. Both have pools looking over the ocean. I personally liked Mares pool better. Both parts of the hotel are equally close to the beach, just few steps away.

Go and enjoy Cuba and this lovely resort!

From 18th October to 1st November

Check in - After checking in at Gatwick (First Choice) we were told to pay an excess baggage charge for being 1kg over. When going to the desk prior to security to pay the charge, we were told we didn't have to pay, and shouldn't have been sent over to begin with. The lady who checked us must have been having a bad day.

Flight - Left on time, there was a good selection on movies and programs and even games to play and the food was more than adequate. There is a surcharge of £5 if you want to upgrade you movies facilities so you can start your movie whenever you want, otherwise they are played on a rolling basis.

On arrival - Straight onto the coach where we were given our wristbands and room keys, along with a map of the resort and restaurant bookings, we were greeting by dancers and cocktails and our luggage was taken to our room for us, the automatic check-in was quite impressive and not something I have come across previously.

Rooms - We were on the Mares side (3061) - Much has been said about the rooms, and yes it's true, they could do with a bit of a make over, but they're more than adequate with a really good power shower and a massive comfortable bed, couldn't really ask for much more. It had a view of the gardens and mountains and also the dolphinarium.

Maintenance - It would appear that the whole resort if currently being refurbished. Whilst we was there, blocks in the Luna side were being painted and I can only assume this is going to carry on to the Mares side as they started some work on the Mares pool, although I don't know if the insides of the rooms are being done.

Restaurants - The French, Italian and Romantica were all very good with exceptional service, they arranged for a gala evening where we were service a very nice prawn cocktail starter, followed by a horrid cheese and tomato soup (personal taste) and then we waited over and hour to get our main, by which time we gave up and went to the buffet restaurant. Speaking of which, I found the Colon buffet restaurant to be good, with a good selection items to be available for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and the freshly cooked meats and fish to be superb, and neither had any trouble with stomach complaints or other issues that have been mentioned previously.

We did have one complaint with the buffet restaurant, in that my partner had a stone in her rice which she nearly put in her mouth which she could have broken a tooth on, or even swallowed of which we brought to management attention - more on this later.

Doctors - My partner had an ear infection (which she had prior to departure) and the antibotics she had run our, but the doctor was very good and prescribed some more. Be aware though, there is a 25CUC mandatory consultation charges and then also another charge for the medication, but he gives a certificate so it can be claimed back on the insurance.

Service - The first week in the hotel was relatively quiet and service was very good, however the occupancy in the second week picked up, and staff seemed to struggle. On two occassions we'd finished our meal before we were even offered any drinks, unfortunately it's not self service, so on other occassions we got drinks from the Mares bar and took them in with us.

Tipping - To us it seemed quite evident that you do get a better service if you tip, but I tip for a good service, not tip to receive a good service. This was evident in the buffet restaurant where tippers would get served almost immediately, and also in the Mares bar, where people waving a peso would get served straight away.

Pools - Both the Mares and Luna pools are excellent and clean, and the was no evidence of 'scum' floating in the Mares pool like previously stated and sun loungers are available at the Luna pool all day and was really nice and quiet.

Snacks - These can be got from the Luna pool and there also two more on the beach, all of which gave good service, and was nice to get away from the hussle and bustle of the buffet restaurant to have a sit down meal.

Beach - Totally fantastic, no more need to be said really. The snorkling is great (we took our own snorkling gear) and either head to the far left or far right where plent of fish can be found (far right was a lot better for fish, but entry to the sea is a little difficult as it's quite rocky.

Flights home - Whilst we was away, the flight times got rescheduled and they now leave 3 hours later than normal. It would have been nice to have been told this, instead we found out on the morning of departure day. Check in was a little slow, but once through there was plenty of seating and a few shops to look around to pass the time. I'm glad we didn't upgrade to the 'VIP' lounge as I didn't deem it to be necessary as there really was enough seating. Not sure how many flights used to leave at the original departure time, but Gatwick was the only flight at this new time. Once again a good selection of movies and adequate food.

Customer Services - As been quoted numerous times previously, Wendy is great also with the others in the Customer Services Team, whom I can't remember their names. We took up the complaint about the stone as it could have broken a tooth (having done that myself a few months previously) and questioned how a stone could get in the food to begin with. We also commented about the tipping issue and they confirmed it is not policy and will try to stop it happening.

We were here for our honeymoon and we had breakfast in bed and a bottle of 'Champagne' and various other bits during the 2 weeks, which was a really nice touch, and because of the complaint, also had a complementary massage along with another reservation at the French restaurant and breakfast in gazebo, and also an automatic upgrade to one of the Royal Service Suites if we return.

Trips - We did the Holguin Combo Tour, Dolphins and Speedboats. All of which were good, and if you would like any more information then please feel free to personal message me as this review is going on longer than anticipated.

All in all, a good holiday, and I would possibly return again one day (maybe our 10 year anniversary) but I feel there are far too many places in this world to visit and I didn't get the feeling that this place is extra special that I desperately want to return.
