went to sol rio de luna y mares on august 12th for 2 weeks and had a very good time. we e-mailed the hotel to ask for a top floor quiet room with a sea view if possible and that is what we got. what makes this hotel so good are the staff, always smiling and saying hello to you. the weather was around 33 almost every day, had one thunderstorm which was amazing to watch, most days were cloudy but that was nice as you will still tan. i really can not say a bad word about this place so if you want a nice relaxing holiday with the most amazing beach ie white sand and a green coloured sea then do not hesitate to book here.
we did have a 6 hour delay coming home BUT we just spent that time at the hotel swimming.

Room Tip: all rooms look good, you have ground, mid and top. we stayed in room 7309 which was quiet and had a...

I stayed in a "superior room with sea view" on the 4th floor with a beautiful ocean view and swimming pool. Hotel employees were very helpful both prior to my arrival during the reservation process and during my stay. I enjoyed the food and the services provided by the hotel except when my phone was stolen. I was disappointed that both the local police and the hotel security weren't interested and refused to take my statement and provide me a crime reference number or even a document that I reported a crime. I was advised by the hotel security that according to the local law if I don't have a suspect I can't report this as a crime!
The other two minor negative points were: Despite included in my package there wasn't "Special welcome cocktail" or "Express delivery and collection of luggage". On the other hand I was impressed that all my à la carte restaurant reservations were booked for me. Overall I recommend this hotel and if I have the opportunity I will go back.

Room Tip: Try booking a room with ocean and swimming pool view on 4th or 5th floors.

Dear Nasiry from London
We are happy that you liked the accommodation, enjoyed the food and services of the hotel. Regarding the incident with your phone, when you make a report like that, the police can not give an official crime reference number unless there is evidence of the crime, a full investigation has been carried out, etc. But the representative from your Touroperator can give you a form to fill out, with your statement, of which you may take a copy.
Thank you very much for your comments,
Ricardo Moreno

We returned home 3/9/13 from a two week stay at the Sol Rio. We had a very relaxing family holiday with our three daughters aged 20, 18 & 16. The Thomas Cook Rep had already checked us in and gave us our room keys on the coach, on our way to the hotel. Therefore when we got to the hotel, we did not need to queue up at reception, we just went straight to our rooms.

Rooms - We had two rooms in the Mares part of the hotel on the third floor. The rooms are very basic, but very clean. normally when we go away and my girls share a room, one of them has to have a small camp bed, however in this hotel the girls had 3 large single beds in their room, which was great. The rooms were cleaned everyday and the towels were changed everyday. The rooms had aircon, beach towels, iron, ironing board, hair dryer, free safe, fridge, tv, radio, shower gel, shampoo, coffee machine and two bottles of fresh water, which were replaced when empty. We were quite happy with the rooms, as all we did was sleep in them.

Staff - 98% of the staff that we met were all very friendly and could not do enough for you. In particular Jose and Paula from the Lunas Lobby Bar, Yunior from the Mares Lobby Bar and Lisandro one of the Managers. We liked the fact that at the welcome meeting we were introduced to the hotel managers from all of the different departments and the overall manager for the whole hotel. Over the two weeks all of these managers spoke to us and other guests on many different occasions, they were all very friendly.

Food - the main restaurant is buffet style, this is where we ate most of our meals, there were flies about, but I just put it down to the heat. There is a snack bar on the beach and by the Lunas pool, which I agree with other guests do have a limited selection of food. There is also an ice cream parlour and four themed restaurants, French, Mexican, Italian and Mediterranean. My favourite was the French.

Pool/beach - there are two pools. The pool in the Mares side is the busier pool, where the entertainment staff are doing games etc during the day. However as other people have said fellow hotel guests are up early reserving sunbeds. We were never able to get a sunbed around this pool, as we were not prepared to get up so early just to reserve a sunbed. We went to either the Lunas pool or the beach. The Lunas pool too had people reserving sunbeds, but most days we were able to find a space. The pools are cleaned everyday. The beach is lovely white sand and turquoise water. You can use kayaks, windsurf, pedalo's, small catarmaran and snorkels from the beach. You can change your beach towels everyday at the hut on the beach

Entertainment - the staff try really hard and put a lot of energy in to the evening shows, but it is not as professional or spectacular as we have seen on other holidays in other countries. As for the kids entertainment I have no idea, as we did not need it.

Other - the gardens are kept in great condition. There are lots of crabs that live in the hotel gardens and very small lizards. there are also half a dozen or so small cats that live in the hotel gardens, although we were never bothered by any of them. There is a small market on the path from the Lunas pool to the beach. My daughters and myself all had a massage in the hotel spa. one of my daughters had her hair cut at the hair salon in the hotel spa. The hotel has three small shops which sell normal bits and bobs ie hats, inflatables, tshirts, snacks, toiletries, postcards, tobacco, alcohol, etc. Their is a bank in the hotel to change your sterling cash or to withdraw cash using a debit/credit card, but they do not accept cards that are connected to US banks. I was able to use my LloydsTSB Debit card. Horse and carriage from the hotel to the local town market cost us 20 pesos for the return trip, the guy dropped us off and then arranged to come back and pick us up an hour later.

All in all we had a very relaxing holiday, although hubby is not one for sunbathing, so he did get bored and took himself off on a few different walks along the beach and the roads outside of the hotel. on one of his walks he found a small national park, that he had to pay 3 pesos to enter, where he saw small and large lizards with blue tails and lots of other birds and frogs.

We have just returned from a weeks break and had a fantastic time.

As per previous comments the Lunas side where we stayed, was a bit dated, but to be honest that added to its charm. We were in room 5209 and had a gorgeous sea view.

Some of the reviews have been quite negative about the food on offer but you are able to have 2 a la carte meals a week from a selection of restaurants. We had a Mexican and French. They also put on a special dinner one night by the pool which was very good. The main restaurant served a huge variety of food and also would cook a selection of meat or fish in front of you to your liking. We have been to several all inclusive resorts but think the variety and quality of food here was the best we have had.

We took some large flask type beakers which the staff were happy to fill up with drinks for us.

The staff were all lovely and friendly, always ready with a smile. We got the impression that they were never expecting a tip, but were very pleased when we did.

My only complaint is that our holiday was too short, we would definitely go for two weeks next time and I hope it will be soon. I am missing those Pina Coladas too :-)

The good stuff first:
The location of this hotel is stunning! The staff are super friendly, especially the maids.
We were here for a wedding, which seemed to go smoothly. The wedding marquee was decorated in beautiful style and colours and is in a stunning location.
We cannot fault the beach or the staff at all.

The bad stuff:
However, our first room had cockroaches and we asked to move. The guy at reception was happy to help us and offered us a new room. This one was a lot cleaner and no cockroaches! The only problem was the constant dripping from the roof - we were on the top floor of the mares side. As the water was coming through the ceiling, the lights were off so when walking along the wet, dark corridor at night we had to make sure we walked slowly so not to slip. The last night they were fixing the pipe so the air conditioning smelt so bad that we had to turn it off and bake in the hot room.
The food was terrible and we got sick from the Mexican A-La-Carte. We were in bed for 36 hours with stomach cramps and diarrhoea after the meal. We stuck to chips and rice for the next week - thought it best to play it safe.
It seemed as though the focus was on alcohol here - a huge variety of spirits, but not a good variety of soft drinks.
The entertainment wasn't great either, but that may be because we don't have children to enjoy all the loud shouting and loud music around the pool all day.

Dear Gemington from Basingstoke,
Thank you for your feedback. We are happy you enjoyed the beach, the wedding, and the staff. We are working hard on refurbishing our rooms and we hope that sometime you will return to enjoy again all the things that you enjoyed with us.
For your next visit you could enjoy swimming pool that is on the Luna side, where it is a lot more quite, since all the games and entertainment is performed on the Mares pool, so the guests can choose where they prefer to go.
Kind regards,
Ricardo Moreno

We have just returned from a fabulous two weeks at this hotel. The management, staff and hotel were brilliant. We stayed in the mares side, fantastic views from 3sides from room 3030! The mares side is busier round the pool but no noise heard at night. The beach is just picture postcard, we didnt waste anytime round pool the beach was just so lovely. Take up the ala carte restaurants, french the best with the mexican being a lovely setting. Unfortunately we didn't fair so well in the italian, we both had a seafood pasta and ended up in bed for 3days.....say no more. Dolphins is a must brilliant day we had over an hour in with them swimming and doing tricks. We did loads of snorkling. No wifi at hotel, but then it was just great getting away from it all, no english papers, no traffic mainly horse and cart with the 50's style cars. Market day everyday, tad small however we had a great group play us music, brilliant. You are isolated to the hotel as in the middle of no where however the hotel has so much going on you dont feel the need to go out. The staff cant do enough for you, made us feel so welcome, so friendly we had a drinks on arrival with them all joining us and waving us off. All making the experience a personal one. Would definitely come back to this hotel. Thank you !

Room Tip: Mares side better quality rooms, great views
