5th visit to Cuba.My husband and I, along with two friends went to this resort for first time November 2012, during hurricane Sandy. Can not say enough about how the staff handled the whole situation. we were one of first to arrive in lobby after storm went through. we all pitched in to clean up,(including General Manager, he worked very hard right along side of his staff, mopping floors, picking up brush and debris VERY IMPRESSIVE) we were served coffee immediately and with in an hour or so they had restaurant up and running with breakfast. I was literally amazed. Staff continued to clean up and we went on with our vacation. Food is the best of any resort I have been to in Cuba (I believe this has a lot to due with General manager and Food Manager) and beaches are by far the nicest ( white sand and not a rock in sight) My husband surprised me with two tickets to return to Sol Luna mares, my daughter and I will be arriving May 19th, I can not wait to get back. Just got back from a 2 week stay in Cuba. First impressions of the place were good.
We stayed on the Luna side which is quieter. We found the rooms average, with the bathroom being a bit of a let down. The bathroom was ok but a bit dated and the plumbing did leak a little.
As me and my partner discussed we wasn't spending a lot of time in the room so this didn't really worry us too much.
The food was good we thought, however getting a table could be a problem a busy periods. We found there to be a good selection and plenty of fruit & veg on offer every meal.
The hotel itself is good but could do with a bit of restoration work. The gardens are well kept and lovely plants and trees.
I used the gym several times and found it ok for a hotel gym.
The entertainment was varied with some good and some not so good. We did find as a young couple ( 25 years old ), that it was a bit dead in the evenings. We went the disco on the beach but there was only about 4 people there us being two of them. I would advise if want lively this is more a place to relax.
The best thing we found by far about this place was the beach. It was awesome, clean, no hassle, lovely clear water to snorkel, beach volleyball, water sports, huge in size the list goes on.
In summary we had a amazing trip and I would return to Cuba but I would look at a different hotel next time.

Room Tip: Luna side is quieter in the day.

Our stay at the hotel was one of the best! We loved everything about the hotel, pools, beach, restaurants, but most of all we loved the people. This place is so positive and has a great energy. This is a place we will come back to 100%! We stayed at this resort April 12-19, flew with CanJet, booked through Nolitours. Everyone in the hotel speaks great english, we really felt bad for speaking minimal spanish. We - a family of 5 plus my mom- felt so welcome and treated well- you get your own attitude in return, so don't expect to be treated like royalty when you treat others like servants. Great thanks to everyone, especially the beautiful Yadira at the reception desk. She accomodated our family with great rooms, as there was a mix up and our travel agent has not sent a request. Yadira fixed it quickly and we couldn't have been more happy. We stayed on the Mares side in rooms 2036/2037(interconnected). I really liked the Mares side, all of us spent most of our time at that pool. The Luna side for us was too quiet. The resort is not large, it takes a 1-2 minutes to walk from one side to the other, it is not divided at all. It is just buildings that you walk through to get to other areas. I booked a massage for 35 pesos, and it was one of the best!! Also the hotel is great on check out. You do not need to wait around or sign up for a courtesy room when you leave, you have the spa showers available to you whenever you want to use them. This was great, I wish most other hotels would do this. No hassle, refresh, quick. We have made great friends at this hotel and hope to see everyone again when we come back. The weather was absolutelly beautiful, 7 perfect days -could not have asked for better!
We took a trip by horse and buggy to the marketplace near the Guardalavaca beach, it was amaizing, such great things, very nice vendors, no hassle. We bought wood toys for our boys, and leather cowboy hats, the prices are very reasonable, so we did not bargain at all as we thought they were fair. The horse and buggy ride was great, 20 minutes each way, spent about an hour at the market cost us 20 pesos. We rode with Angel, he was really nice, we made arrangements with him and he came and picked us up right on time.
The hotel rooms are very clean, very basic, this is not a deal breaker for us. Everything worked, we had water and electricity all the time. Cudos to them for turning off any extra lights at 10 pm, like balcony lights, as people leave them on all day and night. The resort is very clean.
We loved the food, it was great every meal. The bars and staff at the bars were very attentive, you don't have to wait long for anything. Tips are greatly appreciated, but contrary to some reviews you are not made feel like you have to do it!! Do not believe negative reviews, this place is a gem!
The snack bar serves great calamari fritti, we had it every day. If small things can make your vacation less enjoyable, then bring your own straws for drinks, as they ran out often, and plastic spoons if you want to eat your ice cream on the beach, as they ran out of them too. Other than that, bring your positive attitude, make people happy you are and were there. The Cuban people are warm and very nice, just give them a smile and ask for their names, wave and acknowledge them as your peers. You will be a lot richer for it.
We travelled with our 3 boys, 12, 10, and 3 and they did not want to leave, and now a week later are asking when are we going back. I can feel their pain !! :-) We are eager to travel and easy to please-that's our attitude.

My husband and I have just returned from 2 weeks here. We chose Cuba through a friends recommendation, various reviews on here as well as celebrating my 30th and our wedding anniversary. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves but we think you must go with an open mind after all Cuba is Cuba, and don't expect too much. The weather was amazing the whole 2 weeks we were there ranging from 28-34 degrees.
Arrived in Cuba after a 9/10 hour flight so was desperate to get settled into hotel. We were met by our travel rep and jumped on a coach approximately an hours drive to the hotel. Very convenient to be given room card and tag already on coach so we didn't have the hassle to check in when we arrived at the hotel this saved lots of time, when we arrived headed straight to our rooms. Some of the previous reviews on here are very accurate, the rooms are basic, clean and must say they could do with a little revamp, little dated, and perhaps a little maintenence needed but entirely acceptable to stay in. There are 2 sides to this hotel the Luna side and the Mares side. The Luna side is very quiet not much happening the Mares side has all the life, 24 hour bar, boutiques, holiday reps stations main food restaurant. If this is for you make sure you request to stay the Mares side.
We ate in the main restaurant for the first few nights, lots and lots of choice you are sure to find something for everyone. Please note if you want to eat in their various restaurants they have, Mexican, Italian, Mediterranean and French be sure to book well in advance as they get booked up extremely quickly, however they are well worth it. Initially we were a little disappointed due to not being able to get in to any of them for birthday or anniversary but thanks to our rep he managed to get us a space in the Mexican. Food lovely. However we got no special treatment, no recognition of it being my 30th, perhaps a bottle of bubbly or a cake (as preciously seeing reviews of how special other guests were made by the hotel etc for special occasions) this dissapointed me quite a bit. And nothing was done on our anniversary either. Come towards the end of the holiday though we felt food a bit repetitive and boring.
Definately recommended various trips, we did the Santiago de Cuba which was a very long day trip into the old capital of Cuba. Very interesting and tour guide knew his history and facts. We also did the Island Cruise which entailed a boat ride around part of the coast with snorkeling, lunch and swimming with dolphins definitely recommend this. Lovely trip. Had a go at deep sea fishing too for half a day enjoyable but definitely need a strong stomach sea was very rough.
The beach is absolutely amazing though. Beautiful sand and lovely warm water, can get a bit windy at times which sometimes causes the water sports to be cancelled unfortunately this happened nearly every day so if your into water sports this may be somewhat disappointing. The choice of water sports were peddaloes, kayaking and hobby cats.
We visited the little market about 20 mins from the hotel, worth a visit lots to see with great little gifts and crafts to see. You dont get hassled either by the locals which is quite typical in the carribbean.
During our first week eveyone couldnt do enough or us, great service, bar service at the bars and beach snack bar, however we noticed as the time went by it got worse and worse we found out due to the lack pf tipping. Now we did tip but felt e couldn't do this all the time, for example one lunchtime I was kept waiting to be served half hour for lunch before they bothered to come over to take my order. 6 tables had since become occupied whilst I was sat waiting.
We found it hard to mix as many guests were in their groups and many being on their 6th or 7th stay.. often stayed together hard to mingle. We did meet a fantastic couple though at the beginning of our holiday and must say they made our holiday amazing and well worth it.
Evening entertainment happens evry night they hold a different show each night in the theatre. Worth seeing but again towards the end of the 2 weeks bit repetitive.
Medical service at the doctor very good. Had a little accident and bashed my head. Very helpful and sorted me out right away. Nothing too serious.
All in all like I said go with an open mind, dont expect too much. We had a good time but wouldnt return. Perhaps a little more organisation and care needed and to be told what was happening, times etc all bit slack on the information side of things other than that hope this review is helpful for others.

Room Tip: Make sure you stay on the Mares side.

We stayed in this resort first week of April. We travel with two kids age 3 and 8 and a couple of friends. That was our first time in Cuba and we had the best time of our life!!!
After hearing so many bad stories about Cuban resorts we were a little sceptical . We did a lot of research and read many reviews and booked this hotel. No regrets!!!

We are a picky group of people. We stayed at many good resorts in the Caribean like Grand Palladium Rivera Maya or Majestic Elegance Punta Cana which we realy liked but there was something very special about Rio de Luna y Mares. We simple loved every minute we spent at this resort and we can't find one bad thing about it.
Resort is very clean and well kept. The rooms aren't the most modern but very clean. We stayed at the Mares side which was I would say better then Luna side. As a group we stayed in room 5010 with an amazing sea and also room 6120 with the ocean and swimming pool view.
Food was good, we could always find something, coffee for breakfast was very good, always fresh bread, custom made omlet , almost everything you can imagine for breakfast was there. We went to two la carte restaurants Italian and Mexican and we enjoyed both of them.We also loved the dinner on the beach organized by Noli tours.Unfortunately we missed French restaurant but that is another reason to come back ;)
Dinner buffet was great, I don't know how picky can you be if you don't find something good
We loved restaurant on the beach La Pina, they served very good lunches, loved the fish, calamari, burgers...everything

BEACH WAS AMAZING!!! WE HAVE NEVER SEE A BETTER ONE!!!

We never had any problems with a towels or chairs. Amazing, very clean beach!!!

The entertainment at the resort can not be missed. Just FANTASTIC !!!
We highly advise the swimming/dancing in the pool and the fire show on the beach.

Our kids loved the kids club at the beach... Lots of activities ( just show up on time because they have day trips organized for the kids and if you are late , you will miss the whole day of fun).
The gym was good but the spa was even better...!!! Massage highly recommended.

There are a lot of trips available in the surrounding area of the resort.
We went on the fishing trip at the park and the Cuban life.
Both were really good and once again you have to experience it yourself.
There is also a lot of water sports ( catamaran , snorkelling and kayaking) that can be accessed at the beach.. included ... GREAT !!!

At the resort there were a lot of friendly smiling people from Canada, Britain, all over .
never had any issues with anybody , and Cubans are the most friendly people we have ever met.
It seems that the resort is trying to cater to all types of vacationers and guess what they have succeeded. '

Our idea of vacation is not really about going to the same place twice but in this case
we will be returning to Sol Rio de Luna y Mares in the near future.

Room Tip: Try to stay on Mares side, rooms 6120( partial ocean view and main pool ) and 5010 ( ocean view )

My wife and I have just returned from a two week holiday staying at the Mares side of this impressive hotel . My wife picked Cuba on a friends recommendation and because there are few places where you can guarantee good weather in April We never never been to Cuba before and I had little idea what to expect. Perhaps the first thing to mention is that getting to the closest airport Holguin which is an hours coach drive away from the hotel in Guardalavaca involves a 10 hour flight from Gatwick. I do not particularly relish the idea of sitting in any aircraft for 10 hours but the Thomson flight in a Boeing 767 was OK. We passed through the airport at Holguin surprisingly quickly despite strict immigration controls. The process was painless and we boarded a Chinese transfer coach about the most modern form of transport in Cuba . These coaches have good air-conditioning a must in the heat. Stepping off the aircraft was like walking into your oven at regulo 8. A friendly local rep Waldemar made us feel very welcome and amused us on route to the mares hotel. You need to steal yourself for the pot holed roads ever present cyclists horse drawn carts and old American cars .The first thing that struck me was how empty the roads were and how all drivers did their utmost not to kill local cyclists wobbling on the patchily repaired roads. We arrived at the hotel dying for a drink but booked in first through the helpful reception staff. We had a room on the third floor so used the lifts ..there are two close to reception. Entry to each room is via a swipe card which after some trial and error we mastered. The twin bedded room was clean and had Arnold TV and CD player fridge and coffee machine and a new bottle of water laid on. There was no milk so you have to buy this a sort of UHT milk on the shop by reception. Its cheap but supply problems left us short for several days.We got over that by ordering a small glass of milk from the 24_7 bar .This is one of the best features of the large hotel endless drinks and coffee literally on tap. This bar gets very busy after meals with patrons ordering coffees and alcoholic drinks. Staff made this holiday for us.Everyone smiles and considering how little the locals have its amazing they are so friendly. I didn't feel that they resented us for having so much in comparison to them. We found that there was a huge choice of food served buffet style and there are Italian Mexican French and Mediterranean restaurants which can be booked up desperately two per week.I could not fault the food at all .Some friends had Gippy stomachs and even I had the same at the end of our holiday which could be down to ice cream or ice in the drinks we are not sure .As a precaution I would bring a plentiful supply of imodiam so you don't spend all day on the logo. Our room had a bidet which barely functioned and if I were being critical the room decor was a bit tired but entirely acceptable. You are advised not to drink the tap water as is the case in so many countries. The air conditioning was noisy but worked . Our beds were surprisingly comfortable so getting a good nights sleep was easy. The hotel has its own money exchange where you have to change sterling into what's called CUCs or convertible currency .Even though we were fully inclusive you will need some coins for tipping which is endemic. The way I looked at this is that locals earn very little in this communist third world country so your pesos are very welcome. We planned a Dolphin excursion via the rep and it wasn't cheap but very memorable as my wife will testify having been lifted some them feet plus out of the sea by two dolphins under her feet. There are many things you can book apart from just crashing out by the pools or hitting the beach which is one the best features of the resort. The soft sand is almost white and the sea a fantastic shade of green and blue .A constant wind on the shore fools you into thinking that its not that hot and many burnt bodies on the beach show that its easy to get seriously sunburnt here. There are restaurants on the beach x 2 popular at lunch and throughout the day for free drinks. Sunloungers are free but there are no cushions on them so everyone sits or lies on their blue towels s which are free and which can be exchanged daily. My one and only criticism relates to a trip we booked via aircraft to Havana. Basically we turned up at reception at 5am to catch a coach to the airport only to be told the Boeing 737 had broken down at Havana so we couldn't go . DG or some reason no one could phone us to tell us before hand .We got our money back some 600 pounds but this was returned to us as pesos CUCs and of cuc s and we lost out on the exchange rate Despite our rep trying Thomson refused to pay back the full refund in stirling cash that we had paid .This lead to a small loss of about 25 pound sterling ..it could have been worse. We may swallow this or still file a complaint. As we missed out on the Havana trip we actually got a free trip to Santiago due Cuba a four hour coach trip away from our resort plus a stay in a 5 star hotel overnight. We got a new room upon our return for the last two nights of our stay at the Mares which suited us.Our trip there opened our eyes to the poverty in this country and makes us appreciate what we have in the UK. We had a fabulous two weeks and I would return to Cuba even the same hotel. We met some lovely people and the Cuban people are top notch. The only other matter that I should mention is that my wife had to see the on site doctor after her bottom lip swelled up after a day on the beach .We don't really know what caused this but medical attention was first class but costs about 50 pounds for a consultation and some ointment and tablets. Viva the national health in the UK'. I nearly forgot to mention the night time entertainment which was excellent and certainly better than I've encountered in other countries such as Turkey. We would return but were informed that Thomson will be pulling out of Cuba so may have to get there via another operator or alternatively visit Canada and travel down from there .Canadians both English and French speaking make up the largest part of the other guests. There appeared to be few American citizens apart from those visiting on humanitarian grounds not surprising given the history between the USA and Cuba. Its a fascinating place where you will be exposed to unbelievable poverty and yet as a tourist you will be treated like a king, well that's our experience. Try it and keep an open mind and you will love it.

Room Tip: Go for a sea view
