In spite of the few hiccups we had before leaving, once onboard our flight out of Halifax (1/2 hr late leaving) things went quite smoothly. Flight with Sunwing was ok nothing more...going through customs in Holguin was faster than I expected. Bus trip (after dark) was fine. Fun people on the bus and no lack of cold cerveza. Check in was quick. Almost all the people on the bus were staying in the villas so that's where the bus stopped first. There were 5 of us coming from Halifax on April 3. Awaiting us at reception were 3 friends from the UK. I had wrote before hand asking that we all be as close together as possible (there were 7 more coming after us). Most of us weren't in the same building but except for those in building #7 we could see across to one anothers patios. Nothing is that far on this resort which is one of the reasons we like it so much. This was our second visit to Brisas. First time we have ever gone back to the same resort. The location and the staff are definitely what really makes the place. With a party of 15 its not easy but I think everyone was quite pleased. My husband & I and his sister spend a lot of time off the resort...some days we had company...some days we didn't. We went to the market most every day (get your caricature done by yoandi (nickname Flacco)...he's a fabulous artist and a great guy...take him some artist paper and pencils if you can). The bands who play are quite talented and loads of fun!! We have had a friend in Holguin for a number of years now so everytime we go we spend at least one day at his mom's for a pig roast (it's usually the highlight of our trip). We did the double decker bus out to the Indian village. They really don't give you much information in the hour you spend there (as Loony Lou said "it's kinda cheesy") but the bus ride is worth the trip. However, we took a taxi (52 Willy that cost us 50 cuc) to Banes after that and toured the archeology museum and the city with tour guide Luis Quinones Garcia who speaks very good english and is a wealth of information. His son Luis works as a life guard at Brisas. The museum was small but quite facinating. We also visited Gibara again. Such a worth while trip. The scenery is spectacular and Gibara is a great town with cold beer, cheap food, great music (on Sat. and Sun. there is usually live music at the Fort that is open to the public). We also went to a new restaurant off the resort (Miremar) that we were able to walk to. It's on the same road as "El Anca". The views were incredible and the food was good but we accidently ordered way too much!!!
The highlight of our trip this year was having our friend, his wife and their 2 1/2 year old on the resort for a day. The baby had never been to a beach before. They were so grateful for that opportunity!!! We loved it I'm sure as much as they did. I've never seen a child that well behaved have that much fun with no napping, no crying and absolutely no whining!!!! His laugh is so contagious!!!!
As for the resort itself, yes the rooms are in need of some work but how much time do you spend in your room??? We actually had a leaking toilet which almost flooded our room. The maid had it cleaned up and had someone from maintenance in and fixed in no time. We did notice a few things that need some work but I'm sure with the reno's in the villas those things will be done. It may take time. After all it's Cuba.
We had no problem with the food. The buffet always had something (sometimes too much) we liked and the ala cartes were all good, the Bucanero being the best this visit, with the Italian a close second. We never got to the El Zeguan so can't give an opinion on that. The seafood was good with excellent entertainment. The only negative thing I can think of is the bugs. They are similar to our "No see ems". Have a vicious bite. Unfortunately, I seem to be alergic so I end up faring the worst. Others in our group got bit but their reactions weren't nearly as bad as mine. This is not the first time, so I was prepared somewhat. You learn to deal with crap eventually. Wasn't enough to put me off of going back!!!!
The most amazing part was how small the world really is...in two weeks, we saw people from home (we didn't know they were going), people we hadn't seen in years, people who were related to people in our group, people who knew people we knew (even a gentleman who had hired my youngest brother many years ago and where they both still work today) people we had met before at Brisas, etc. It was crazy!!!! And we also met some wonderful new people!!!
The only really bad part for us was leaving!!!! Can't wait to go again!!!!
