Just returned from the Playa Costa Verde hotel highly recommended by an acquaintance. Did n’t quite live up to his glowing reference. Eaten alive by the local insects-sand flies, mosquitos not sure which. Unfortunately the beach area was the worst for the insects so only braved the sea, which was lovely, twice. Should have realised given the heat and fumigating on our first night. Flies proliferated in the dining area as did birds so left any food in the open well alone.
Food was virtually the same every day though I did enjoy the shrimp/chicken wraps.
Catering highlight of the week was the hog roast. Japanese night was great and so would the Cuban night have been if it was n’t for the multiple power cuts, which the beetles took advantage of on my plate. Found the 24 hour food and alcohol availability useful.
Room was fine with air conditioning and the maid turning up every day though she wasn’t that thorough –there was toothpaste top in the sink when we arrived and it was still there when we left.
Staff were very friendly and hardworking and we made some good friends. Couldn’t find the Thomson rep when we needed guidance when one of our party had the Rangoon Runs with no sign of the finishing line-Thomas Cook rep pointed us in the right direction-well done that man! Medical treatment was excellent by the way.
Didn’t go on one trip as we enjoyed the heated pool too much and didn’t fancy walking through a town in that heat.
The second week, quite a few uncouth Cuban tourists turned up-they have no concept of queuing amongst other things.
Wouldn’t go back because of the problems in the dining area and the proximity to the nature reserve (swamp in English).

I went to Playa Costa Verde in November 2011 with two girl-friends. We had an amazing time, especially since we only paid $635 for a 7-night stay. for the price you pay this resort is very much well worth it!

FLIGHT
Our vacation was booked with Sunwing. We had no problems with the flight. There was enough food and drink to keep us happy, we even had a complimentary glass of champagne. :) we didn't have any difficulties at the airport either (other than having to pay for toilet paper, surprise! oh well... next time I will bring some in my carry-on ;)

ROOM
My first impression of the room was not the greatest since it looked a bit old and plain. it was a bit cold the first night but that was because we didn't know how to adjust the AC properly, after that it was fine. We forgot all about the look of the room after the first day since we spent hardly any time in it and had so much fun in the resort. ;) We didn't have problems with the room's cleanliness. The ladies who cleaned the room usually left us fun towel art - we really enjoyed that. I would recommend bringing your own toilet paper though since theirs seemed a bit rough. ;)

FOOD
We were pleasantly surprised by the quality of food since we heard food in Cuba may not be the best. We really enjoyed the buffet as well as the a la carte restaurants, especially the teppanyaki one. the servers were good, and we didn't wait long for the food. we especially liked their freshly made breakfast pancakes at the buffet. we didn't have any stomach etc problems at all.

POOL
the pool was nice, felt large enough for the amount of people around it. plenty of seating and it was very easy to get fresh towels as needed. I enjoyed their water aerobic class.

BARS
The pool bar was ok, very nice servers though with some creative drinks. The lobby bar drinks were of better quality than the ones at the pool bar but we enjoyed both locations :) We really liked the cappuccinos from the lobby bar, worth the wait.

BEACH
Beautiful sandy beach. Water was warm & clear. We found a really good spot for snorkeling close to the shore towards the right side of the beach where Blau Costa Verde is.The left side of the beach (by Playa Pesqero) was a bit more rocky but had a nice gazebo. The weather was very nice during our stay, with only a small shower once or twice which did not interrupt us in any way.

ENTERTAINMENT
We had a good time dancing & listening to karaoke at the disco. There were always some games happening by the pool, and they were fun to watch. we didn't see any of the stage performances, but the water ballet in the pool was really well done. come early to get a good seat.

EXCURSIONS

We went on two excursions:

1. Santiago de Cuba
Visiting: the Revolution square, cemetery Santa Ifigenia to see changing of the guard, a rum factory, local food market, El Morro fortress, and hotel Casa Granda with nice view of the city.

This tour was OK. The cemetery was a little boring but the tour guide had some interesting stories to tell. The fortress was really nice with great views (just be careful of going into small rooms, my friend and I went into one where there were two staff ladies who didn't want to let us leave without giving them money after they offered to take a picture. tips should be voluntary not threatened. unfortunately some of the other tourists we spoke to run into similar trouble). Also beware of beggars in Santiago itself. a good lunch was included.

2. Jeep Adventure - loved this one!
We got to ride through the countryside in a 4x4 jeep type vehicle. one stop at the place where Christopher Columbus 1st landed in Cuba. then we got to do horseback riding (I felt bad for the horses though as they were skinny). Another stop was to do speed-boating - the boats were not super fast, but you got to steer it on your own, which was fun. We also had a good lunch along the way.

NOTE: to drive the vehicle you need to know how to drive manual transmission - the tour does not provide drivers.

Hope this review helps.

I would definitely come back to this resort :)

My Husband and I have just returned from a two week stay at this hotel and we had a lovely time and would go back, the only downfull is the lack of air conditioning or over head fans in the main buffet area and the lobby. It was really humid in the evenings and there seemed nowhere to cool down. The food was fine freshly cooked for you I tried a lot of fish I had not had before and would recomend the grill bar which you had to pay a few peso.s for but the lobster and steak were great. We were lucky and was given a suite over looking the sea which was lovely, cleaned every day with fresh towels and linen. The evening entertainment was ok the water show was brillant. Beach is beautiful clean and loads of sun beds and ice cold drinks and hot dogs at the bar on the beach, Beach towels supplied and not bad quality as snokeling masks etc fre of charge as are the pedlos etc etc.The only down side to this holiday was our flight was delayed by 8 hrs and Thomson failed to inform us or keep us up to date with what was going on, so we lost a day of our holiday. Met two lovely girl Vic and Vikki who were good company if invited to the goodbye dinner would recomend you to go.

Went to playa costa verde on our honeymoon. It was the best time of our lives. Amazing hotel, people and most of all the resort. Amazing blue water and white sand. It also had a aqua bar. I've had the best experience. Always take more money with you as it cost more to pay by card. Already planning on going back next sept 2013. Playa cost verde felt like a dream come true.

Room Tip: We had the room near the beach. Best place.

This is the cheapest price we ever paid for a Cuba vacation for 7 days and truly enjoyed all aspects of it. The room was a little dated but very clean and the service was super. We were also located near the jacuzzi so good times every day. The food was varied and lots of fish and fruit choices daily. The staff was very accomodating and friendly. The grounds very lush for Cuba and well maintained. This was our 7th trip to Cuba and we always try a different place each time for the sake of variety. If the price of $660.00 comes by again we will most certainly go back to the same resort again rather than searching for new horizons.

Room Tip: Ask for a room close to the outdoor spa. It's very pretty outdoors.

Just got back after spending a week at the resort...what a wonderful place...beautiful surrounding...great service...staff was very friendly and helpful...would love to return again.....only downside...beds were terrible...woke up very sore every morning.......this my my second visit to Cuba..my first visit was may 2012. Club cojimar near cao coco.......that place does not compare....costa verde far better....enjoyed the 3 meal buffet and the snack bar that was 24 hrs....pool snack bar was a nice treat mid-day....ice cream bar was always a sweet treat in the afternoon...only strange occurrence is the allowance and tolerance of male/female companions.....young cuban women with older tourist men was a little creepy.....but I just laughed at the sight...to each it's own.....I really hope to return soon.......

Third time to cuba, first time here, always a bit wary on first time stays but from start to finish an excellent time. Staff are really helpful, room was great, restaurants good, buffet was more than adequate. Plenty of other places for food (24 hour snack bar, tacos ice cream parlour, beer tent, and beach) we could always find something to eat. Beach is lovely and clean although a bit pebbly in places.

Very hot and humid, but very quiet at this time of year, no queues

Didnt suffer too much with bites although some people had a few on their legs. Good insect repellent 50% DEET. Always read all your travel docs, relating to visas, travel tax (to leave Cuba 25 peso each) and most importantly which BANK CARDS you can use. Take a couple just in case, nothing linked to America is accepted.

This is beautiful country with beautiful people, but remember it is a poor country and nothing like
home. If you want the equivalent of 4 or 5 star in England dont go to Cuba. If you want a relaxing beach holiday with culture this is the place.

Room Tip: All rooms have balconies/patio corner suites are slightly bigger and have bigger balconies
