“Great food, slowish service”
Reviewed May 21, 2012 via mobile

We went here for dinner on a Thursday night. The food was exceptional and the ambiance was quite nice as well. My one complaint was that the appetizer took forever to arrive and the entrees were slow as well. I would however return as it was a pleasant experience.

“Wow, Wow, Wow!”
Reviewed May 14, 2012

I have always wanted to eat at Il Mercato and I finally made it; I was not disappointed!
First this is a inexpensive and and expensive resto in one. You can order a main for $16 and enjoy the bread and be very happy OR you can tour the menu and build a delicious meal that will still come in under $50 (no wine).
The Antipasti of Italian cold cuts, cheeses, marinated vegetables, olives was bang-on good, soooo good. The pasta special was not from the menu and was a wonderful creation; fettuccine, balsamic, pancetta, sweet peas, pepperonata and goat cheese. A masterpiece.
Desserts are something to behold and I should have have chocolate truffle cake but I opted for the lighter(!) bread pudding; still a palate pleaser!
I'll be back!

“Good, but not fantastic!”
Reviewed May 4, 2012

The food here is usually consistently good and there is enough variety to satisfy different tastes. Some people rave about this restaurant, but sometimes I find it hard to get past the lack of atmosphere and close quarters.

“Now Here's a Find!”
Reviewed May 2, 2012

She was kind of 'seafooded out'. I'd love some Italian. And since we'd been hiking all day (wow, did you know Halifax has lots of hills? Eat your heart out San Fran!) we were both a bit worn. This place is right around the corner from the Lord Nelson where we were staying.

Checked the menu online ... hmm, looks pretty good!

Since we'd cocktailed at the Victory Pub at the Lord Nelson, we went straight to the bot of red, a pretty nice Valpolicella.

She had the Antipasti Plate ... which we shared. It's huge. And delicious. Ham, prosciutto, salami. Artichokes. Olives. Parmesan. Marinated veggies. More.

But, I had meanwhile ordered the Pan-Seared Scallops. Wonderful!!!

She went for the eggplant pizza ... pretty interesting unless you're expecting pepperoni and tomato sauce. I, not seafooded out, chose the Lobster Linguine.

In a word ... exquisite! Incredibly tasty. Pasta was infused with the flavour, then big chunks of lobster scattered throughout!

If you're in Halifax, and you're feeling like Italian ... Il Mercato.

Oh, service and ambiance was great! And all pretty reasonably priced. Under $100 before tax and grat ... with the bot of wine. Two apps. Two mains.

Very uninteresting.
I've been there a couple of times for seafood dishes and was disappointed. Overcooked and mushy. The decor is a bit "canned" ... and uninteresting.
